Callum in Australia

It’s not been that long since my last blog, but there has been plenty going on here in Australia.

When I last wrote, back in November, I was looking forward to being an English cricketer here during a successful Ashes series. After the morning of the first test in Brisbane all was going to plan, and I was happy to remind the Aussies I knew that we had won 3-0 in England last summer. As we all know, things changed dramatically after that first morning and the Aussies have not been shy in letting me know at every opportunity! However, the great thing about the Ashes rivalry is that it’s all done in fantastic spirit.

Away from the Ashes, apart from playing cricket and training hard, I have managed to fit plenty of things into my free time. This has included going to the Randwick races with Luke Wells, who is also out here playing Grade Cricket. I have been white water rafting, hiking in the Blue Mountains, squid fishing off Port Stephens, exploring beach caves near Newcastle and enjoying the miles of sandy beaches in New South Wales. I was lucky enough to have my family visit me over the holidays. We spent Christmas day on the beach, saw in the New Year watching the fireworks over Sydney Harbour, and spent a day at the Sydney test match.

The 1st Grade cricket season here in Newcastle has been on a 3 week Christmas break, and is due to start again this weekend.  I am really looking forward to playing again, as I start my build up to the season back home. My side, Charlestown, sit 2nd in the league and although I won’t be here for the end of their season I hope to help them be in a position to push for the title. Personally I was scoring runs before the winter break and I hope that continues when we start again.

Wishing all the supporters, players and staff at Sussex CCC a happy and successful new year, and I look forward to seeing you again in March.
