I have been working for Sussex Cricket Board since March 2012 as Cricket Development Manager. Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun – I feel like I’ve been at the Club for several years!

As I work for the development team, my working day can vary from a traditional 9-5 shift in front of my laptop at the ground to being out and about in West Sussex during the day and in evenings. My main responsibility revolves around the foundation of why our game exists – cricket clubs. This covers a number of key areas including participation programmes, facility guidance, funding advice, volunteers and player pathway support. There are over 100 cricket clubs in West Sussex and over 60 have a junior section, so being in more than one place at a time can prove to be a bit difficult sometimes! Luckily though, I’m not a one man band, as I have an enthusiastic team around me that carry out the majority of delivery within the area.

My other main responsibility, apart from being the Staff Sharks Cricket Team Vice Captain, is managing the Schools Strategy within the county which incorporates Chance to Shine, our main state school funder. It is my job to ensure that the programme continues to be funded within Sussex, as well as looking at ways that we can enhance our product and add value to our delivery from a strategic level.

As well as the above, I am a trained customer service facilitator through the World Host programme, which has been rolled out to the staff here over the past year. The Club has put a lot of effort into ensuring that the customer’s journey is a positive one whenever a customer comes into contact with our brand and I am very lucky to be part of it.

Away from my job here, I do enjoy watching the odd game of cricket! I am extremely lucky to get the opportunity to watch world class cricketers here at the ground and sometimes it feels like the whole experience still hasn’t sunk in. I am a bit of an all-rounder when it comes to sports, but the term ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ certainly springs to mind when describing my sporting ability (especially when it comes to golf). I turn out for the Staff Sharks football 5-a-side team on a Monday night when I can (where I have now become known as ‘Virgil’ due to my apparent Thunderbird running style) and I’ve started to play rugby on Saturdays again for a local club. In a previous life I was a cricket coach and I still manage to keep my hand in coaching as well with a few sessions a week with talented cricketers in the Indoor School.

Overall, it’s fair to say that I feel extremely proud and privileged to be doing what I do. I never take a day for granted and I am looking forward to many more years working for this historic club.
