I recently went to the Where Cricket Meets Beaujolais nouveau lunch at Sussex County Cricket Club and had a thoroughly enjoyable time, complimented as it was by fine wine and food, high level networking and risqué comedy!
The Where Cricket Meets...concept is the brainchild of ex Sussex legend and current Business Relationship Manager, Tony Cottey. Guests in the past have included Sir Viv Richards, Paul Merson, Howard Webb and, now the rather bizarre choice of Beaujolais nouveau! That's the great thing about the concept, cricket can meet...virtually anything and bring a whole new idea, or in this case, an 80s wine favourite, to the table.
The event was held in the magnificent Montefiore Boundary Rooms and featured the rather fruity French Comedian, Marcel Lucont, to compliment the rather fruity wine! Shoe and sockless, his Twitter profile suggests he likes to 'charm women and mock the stupid' - as well as the English it seems! A very funny, well received 30 minutes after walking barefoot on stage he pranced off to a sustained ovation.
The food supplied by Sussex's in-house catering arm, 1839, also had a French flavour. Sea bream starter was followed by coq-au-vin and apple galette with nougat glace and it was simply sumptuous. The wine also complimented the food beautifully. All in all, the perfect way to spend a wet and windy Thursday afternoon in Sussex with a pitchside view of the ground to boot. What else could you ask for?
