strip them out over the years and there wouldn't have been much of a side in any decade.

I can recall Hoddy as a mouthy little primary schoolboy playing for Bexhill U'11 against Willingdon (and we ran up against him every year). He represented Sussex at that age range along with Stewart Collier, and Johnny Haffenden who also played for Bexhill. Haffenden used to play in the B team along with my son and most of them got dropped when they streamlined the players to just one team in the U'12. The memories eh?

As far as I'm aware Hodd was about the only one of that age group taken on by Sussex although playing for England U19 helped to faciltate that. Turk and Nash were from the year above.

PS I would always pick Hoddy over Brown despite both having sound Sussex credentials, because Hodd was a comprehensive school lad whereas Brown went to public school.

Good lad...may be inner circle material yet.

No doubt Hodd is a quality keeper...his batting however seems to have gone downhill since his first season when he was excellent. If Browns keeping and batting improve as his potential suggests Hodd will find the competition for first team spots difficult,especially as Gatting,Wells and Machan are chasing one batting spot.

Lee Hogdson, Simon Cook, Ben Harmison, Chris Jordan, Matt Spriegel and Naqaash Tahir are interesting names.

I would definitely have a look at Hodgson and Tahir.

They're no better than what we have already! Has Cook been released? We are giving Tahir a trial in the seconds next season on an uncontracted basis I believe and Jordan and Spriegel have signed new contracts with Surrey. Hodgson and Harmison are poor cricketers!

As for Hodd he will surely only leave if there is the offer of guaranteed first team cricket otherwise he may well sign for Sussex because even if Hampshire were to offer two year he would be likely to be here for the next two years with Callum having only just turned 17.

That's what I mean - leave speculation to the Sun and the Mirror - Wisden or The Wisden Cricketer Magazine has always been spot on and is known for quality.

I can only go by the one issue I have read but on that showing, I felt that was enough so have bought no more. I believe it was the April '08 one and I bought it for the flight back from watching us play the MCC.

To me it seemed very tabloidy, almost to the point of being a Slurrey/Ramprakash fanzine, and very dismissive of anything non-Test ground.

a number six sadly he isn't.

we must also remember that matt prior is the club's number one keeper.
