Topic: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

In a rain reduced game (48 overs per side)...

West Torrens 170 (Hatchett 7-0-31-2)

Southern Districts 111 (Hatchett 0)

So two top order wickets and reasonably tidy figures again. I'll get out and have a look after Christmas, but I must say I'm surprised that there appears to be little interest in this lad given the supposed dearth of quality seamers at Sussex.

I seem to remember more than acceptable performances in the 1st team at the beginning of last season...then nothing.

Please don't tell me it's because he makes the tail too long Mart. Shaun Tait would have to be the worst I've ever seen and he batted at 9 for us last season!

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

looks like we're on a two-man crusade re this one, Crowie - ive mentioned more than once that he could be one that could be thrown in the deep end and wouldnt let us down - he seems to have returned a tidy set of figures (admittedly nothing spectacular) in each game hes played

6 wickets in 8 2XI games last season was hardly encouraging! He has yet to prove he can successfully bridge the gap between club and 2XI cricket.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

Ah yes...I keep forgetting you are the stats man Mart.

The thing about statistics though is that they are like bikinis...

what they reveal is interesting but it's what they hide that is crucial.  wink

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

He didn't bowl much in those games. I think he is behind Adkin and Thorpe in the pecking order.

Will we see Matt Wood next season? He made his 2XI debut 7 years ago and is 25 in January. His tally of 12 wickets in 11 games was disappointing especially as 7 of those came in just one game!

If it is a straight choice between these two guys next season I would probably opt for Lewis.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

I think I need Crowies confirmation, but my point is that he is returning decent figures in Australia in a standard of cricket which is superior to second x1 cricket in England

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

The problem is the wickets are very different out there! Sandri had a decent record in South Africa but struggled to take wickets over there. I'd prefer to see Lewis take wickets in English conditions (albeit at 2XI level) before passing any further judgement.

I wouldn't say superior to 2nd XI...but probably a more consistent quality and more intense. After all we are talking the best side out of around 60 players at each club, whereas 2nd XI is used to try out youngsters, kolpak no hopers and provide 'experienced leadership' using players older than me.

Of course Mart is right that the wickets are different, however I don't subscribe to the fact that a good bowler is suited to only one kind of wicket and cannot adapt his line and length accordingly. If he didn't "bowl much" as you say Mart, therein lies the crucial thing that the stats hide. Strike rate, economy rate and average would be a much more reliable stat than wickets per game in this case.

However, we all know my view on statistics. I plan on seeing the lad bowl in the new year...I'll report back on what I think of him then.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

Hacthett stats in 2009 for 2XI:

SR: 78 (i.e. 1 wicket every 13 overs)
ER: 3.65
Ave: 47.5

His strike rate and average need to come down. 78 overs in 8 games isn't a lot as 7 of those games were in SEC. I hope Adkin, Hatchett and Thorpe appear for 2XI in 2010.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

In a 50 over game....

Adelaide 7 for 175 (Hatchett 10-3-29-3)
Southern Districts 7 for 177

So a key bowling performance in a good win against a strong Adelaide outfit.

Well done that man.

Coincidentally, identical figures for ex Redbacks seamer Gary Putland (Southern's other opener)

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

Time for my customary plug re Hatchett -still delivering economical, consistent bowling - would love to see what he could do at first team level

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

It will be interesting to see who plays in Development XI next season which consists of players under the age of 21. I think it might be:

Batting

Jones
Machan
Wells (Green)
Kalidasan
Willway

I have included Machan and Wells as Hudson-Prentice and Finch aren't ready to be exposed at this level yet. Beeny and Gould are too old. Green will come in Wells while at Uni.

Keeper

Davies

Spinner

Parsons

Seamers

Adkin (Glover)
Endersby
Hatchett
Thorpe (Bernadin)

I expect Glover and Bernadin to fill in for Adkin and Thorpe while they are at Uni.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

I've looked at the program Sweaty and I'll be heading off to watch him on the 9th Jan, an auspicious day in the history of mankind!  wink

Standby for an honest opinion of where I think he is at - given that anyone can have an off day!  big_smile

Any idea why he was used so sparingly?

7 of the matches were 50 overs games

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

Ah, good point - ta TC. So way too early to judge yet. Very eager to hear your report, Crowie. So far so good down under. Surname also has decent, if quite challenging, potential for future limerick competitions

5 of the matches were 2XI championship games and 2 others were three day friendlies.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

I was surprised to read that Robbo rates Rollings as a better prospect than Hatchett. I agree with the other two he mentioned though.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

We don't know that he does though Mart. We just know that he thinks he will have a chance when he fills out

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

Rollings needs to stay free of injury as he has missed two of the last three years through injury. He needs to prove himself in club cricket . Adkin, Hatchett and Thorpe are ready for 2XI action.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

Spoke to the lad a bit today...brilliant lad and took 4 poles (AGAIN!) in a one dayer. I just can't understand why SCCC appear to have 'passed him by'.

If I had one small criticism, I would say he needs to garnish a couple of yards of pace to succeed at 1st class level, but I reckon a half decent coach could get that out of him. He appeared to be labouring in his run up, but then again it was 43deg! But that's easy fixed...a few short paces to begin with will get the weight and momentum moving in the right direction. Then the 'loadup'...more difficult but not rocket science. The rest he has. Bowls good areas and good lines and (for a pace bower) THINKS maturely about the state of the game. This bloke is a fast bowling coaches DREAM, 6'5" and still only 19!

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

cheers Crowie, enough info there to keep my one-man crusade going (or is it now a two-man one)

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

I'm sure Hatchett and Rollings will be given a chance to prove themselves in 2XI during the first half of next season when Adkin and Thorpe are at University. Hatchett at 6'5" should be a fast bowling coaches dream. But then we also have 6'7" Adkin and 6'10"Rollings too.

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

I'm on board Sweaty, seems like the raw basics are there.
Crowies description sounds good, although how he got to talk to Lewis if he's 6ft 5in i'm amazed.........ah perhaps thats why he took Mrs Crow along to carry his cool box and for him to stand on. wink

Who is that man talking to Schlidd ?

Re: Lewis Hatchett in Aus.

Very droll big fella!  smile

Figures for Lewis....

University 182 (Hatchett 10-1-43-4)
SDCC 165 (Hatchett 4no)
