I did not realise Sky was a charity who gave money away to keep cricket going .They charge a lot and make a fortune . I am sure plenty of people subscribe because of cricket.
I certainly do .

ESPN will be looking to buy into cricket in 2013. As for the BBC well they will continue with snooker darts and tiddly winks .Not forgetting the boat race!!!

As for our membership  it has gone up 100% in under 5 years which is plenty.

This season it costs  £175 to watch 8 cc and 6 x40 games .Next season it is likely to be 6 cc so I would hope to see a reduction to £150 . I believe our core membership will fall with the reduction of 4 dayers. If CC continues to be stuck into April and late August I see alot of people leaving .

Plenty of members join just to watch CC at Hove . This season come the 27 May they will discover no more proper cricket at Hove until 27 August . Next season they will see only 5 CC at Hove ie Horsham will cease but Arundel may survive.

Do you really think we should be paying £300 for this utter shambles of a fixture list .If you do not want to watch 2020 then from 27 May , last day of 4 day v worcs ,until August 18 th at Horsham there is 5 days of cricket ie 4 days at Arundel  from the 7 July and a 40 over v Worcs on 19 July ( oh yes we play a 50 over mickey mouse game v Bangladesh  on a  Saturday, where we will get 10 men and a dog).

I am going to the 2020's this season and will put up with the noise lack of seats  etc as they will be entertaining and because I love being at live cricket and 5 days between end of May and mid August is not accepatable to me . Would I pay £300 ???  for such a small amount of ordinary cricket . Sadly I do not think so . And I am sure alot more members will think likewise.


If you believe we should be paying £300 plus then perhaps you can suggest what we do about this shambolic fixture list which is designed to kill 4 day cricket !!

I thought that Horsham and Sussex signed up for a three year contract last season?

You will be lucky if they reduce the price when there is less cricket. They didn't when the reduced the number of overs in a day from 104 to well under 100 for the four day game.

20/20 games are ok if you live in Hove, however who wants to travel accross the county at night time for a 40 over game?

Not too sure if the dog will turn up for the Bangladash game but I could be wrong lol

Sky is doing a good thing for county cricket and you see that as soon as you look at the money and costs they effectively subsidise.

And the IPL online is rather good. Espeically because I can watch it at school tongue

Of course, thanks to 'Sky', players' wages have increased; but, in my view, they have got out of hand. While, the ECB have done a fantastic job using the 'Sky' money to invest in grassroots, community and women's cricket, should they be using it also to bail out certain county clubs from administration, year after year?

Surely, the ECB should be encouraging and helping these clubs to sort out their financial woes rather than plastering over them.

Before the 'Sky' money began, there were 17 county clubs. They had successfully survived since the formation of the championship in 1890.

The irony is, since the money came flooding in, I would suggest more clubs are in financial difficulty than ever before.

But that is not my view.

The ECB hand the 'Sky' money over to the clubs in the hope they will use it wisely and sensibly, "ensuring a vibrant domestic game..." and in the process, bring through quality players of Test standard. This money also encourages county expansion and team improvement within the more ambitious clubs, which is a noble pursuit, in my view. But, this automatically creates financial risk. Some will succeed like Glamorgan, while others will falter like Kent.

At present, the ECB act like the parent, who clear up the mess when a few of their children get it wrong. The truth is, there is not enough income in English cricket to allow 18 professional counties; let alone the proliferation of players' wages and the increasing number of ground expansions. Take away the 'Sky' money and at least half the counties would go into administration. That can't be a healthy situation?

Thats true S&F big_smile the money isn't enough to cover all 18 counties' high player salaries, but I am not against their salaries so much. In my opinion they are only a touch over what they should be.

The ECB money is not a hand out from Rupert Murdoch  - it is provided by the ECB, in line with their Strategy for cricket in England and Wales, to enable the clubs to develop cricket and cricketers in their counties. Sussex happen to do that particularly well and to have somebody on our message board banging on day after day about removing this essential element of the funding for the club I love is really irritating me.

Do you have a reading difficulty? Perhaps, you read just one sentence of one of my posts and then make a judgment on them all? During the years I have written on BBs, never have I come across such a wrong interpretation. big_smile

I have repeated many times how essential the ECB money is; that without it a number of county clubs would go into administration. I have highlighted the very positive aspects of how this ECB funding is used, including grassroots, community and women's cricket. I have posted links including both radio and TV interviews, supporting this view.

So, bother reading some of my posts before you fire off a rude and quite frankly, ignorant and boorish post.

Yes, I questioned whether the ECB funding was plastering over the financial problems many counties have; but the idea of stopping the ECB money would be catastrophic to English cricket.

And as for the extreme sensitivity shown by you over any criticism towards our club Sussex, it is beyond belief.

Where have I criticised Sussex concerning the ECB money? I have commented how fortunate the club is Re: The Cama legacy. I have also stated that while Sussex face financial challenges ahead, I am optimistic Dave Brooks has the business experience to gain new revenue streams from the ground refurbishment.

Perhaps, what confuses a few posters is that some of the views I write are rhetorical questions and not necessarily ones I agree with. They are written to create debate and to move the discussion on.

I am delighted to see that this particular thread has gained over 4,700 views in just two and a half weeks; quite a record compared to others; and that many different posters have contributed to this success. It shows that Sussex supporters are interested in the subject of our club's finances.

I don't see a solution to the financial problems certain clubs face at present. But I am optimistic that Sussex will fair better than most, given the Cama legacy and the business prowess of Dave Brooks.

As to the sensitive subject of players' wages, perhaps, salary caps would be a good beginning?
