Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season
Meanwhile, Rana is in demand elsewhere.
Rana does well where he feels wanted, at Hobart and Hove.

Meanwhile, Rana is in demand elsewhere.

A hugely motivated Rana, roaring in with a Sussex shirt on his back... yes please! If he played for most or all of the season, I'd back him to be the leading CC divII seamer... and make our short odd realistic.
Not a lot of time now till the season starts so I guess there will be few choices available so best to sign Rana as the locum for Yasir and he may end up playing more games than Yasir.
The rules again are a bit stupid...Cant have two overseas players under contract for CC at one time,no overseas contract less than 21 days.So you have to sign Rana for April and May,Yasir for June and first half of July and the Rana again till season ends. Or something like that.
Would be happy with an early decision of Rana or Sami.
No doubt if and when something happens we will find out in due course, but i am hoping its rana.I do wish the men in suits would simplify the o/p rule its seems all a bit of a mish mash which cant be good to improving the standard of county cricket overall with clubs being left in a state of limbo at certain periods of the season.
If we are going to get promoted back first time then the overseas bowling slot is the key position in the team for me. We need someone who's quick and will take a lot of wickets.
Sentiment can't come into this signing And I hope we can pull a rabbit out of the hat from somewhere.
Rana would need to be in his pomp as 10 @ 41 would not be enough for us. ![]()
I can see the logic but at the same time dont really believe yasir wouldnt of taken enough wickets as hes a fantastic one day bowler as we all know but in the longer form of the game has been as consistent. But of who we can get, ranas a better bet for me as hes a proven strike bowler, yes questions still are to be asked of him after that major injury in a sussex shirt but think he is the man even though there may be a slight risk.
There is certainly a risk, agree, though I wonder whether he's come into a bit of form over the last 9 months, and I'm not sure we should make too much of his time at Yorks, who didn't take to him. Has anyone been following his long-form cricket this winter?
Ardcarran - good question - but with the proliferation of one-day cricket a quick search suggests he's only played two 'long-form' (4 day) games during our winter :
Rana - Quaid-e-Azam Trophy
(9 wickets @ 22.44)
whereas our other friend Mohammad Sami managed 10 games :
Sami - Quaid-e-Azam Trophy
(38 wkts @ 21.02)

Thanks, 3rdman. Interesting stats.
Promising news.
"They [Tasmania] have renewed my contract for the Big Bash Twenty20 competition as the ban on me only prevents me from playing for the national team," Rana said. The 32-year-old said he was also in talks with Sussex."

looks a goer and makes sense
The Rana/YasIr 'job-share' worked well for us in 2006 and I would be thrilled to have Rana back. He is extraordinarily gifted and will be more than a match for anyone in the second division. Whatever his stats are elsewhere doesn't bother me as I know he will run through walls for Sussex and, for me, that puts him ahead of any other contender.
Good news about Rana.
Lukethelionheart - Looking at your signature who is Mike Robinson? I think you mean Mark!
I thought that was the one month he was clear of Pakistan duties, no>
sharkey,
Athers mistake... And to think he has just been voted top sports writer of the year! ![]()

A little more information about Rana signing for Sussex this season.
"I have this new contract with Tasmania and I am also negotiating another contract with Sussex to play for them this summer," Naved said. "... I am hopeful of the Sussex contract as it will mean I can continue my cricket in England in the coming summer."

With rana added to our sqaud think we will get promotion as all the blocks are nearly in place just an expierenced batsman light so if gatts and 1 other youngster comes to the fore then i believe we will have another good season.

Time for Thornely to step up to plate!
Yes time for him indeed to step up to the plate.

Good to see it in black and white, just keeping everything crossed now that we will soon be welcoming Rana back to the family, where he belongs.
Incidentally, Bruce seems to have forgotten that Rana was in the 2007 championship winning side too, having literally run through walls for Sussex (an advertising board to be precise) and got that sickening shoulder injury all in the cause. It typified his passion for the club.
His passion to the cause that makes him a legend at sussex.
That's a bit of a bummer
Just as well we signed Rana, someone is smiling upon Sussex ![]()

Not the first time the cricket gods have smiled on us this way. When Yas first came, Rana was injured and we couldn't have replaced him had he not still been called up by Pakistan. As it turned out, it was a long term injury and we wouldn't have had him for the rest of the season.
