Congratulations to my alma mater.

Does anybody else agree with me that a quota system might be beneficial to ensure fairer representation across the schools and to reduce the risk of this Centre of Cricket Excellence becoming a Centre of Cricket Complacency?

It does seem strange that Sussex CCC are not producing any quick bowlers. In my school days there were Hastings schools, East Sussex schools and Sussex schools squads. There were loads of kids involved who wanted to bowl quick. I faced two really quick guys in the nets who disappeared after their school years.
Snow, Giddins, Lewry and Kirtley in the last forty years, that's one every ten years. Are we really scouting all around the County schools? Is there any scouting network?

Re: 11 Brighton College pupils selected for Sussex Junior squads

Congratulations to all selected but I'm a bit surprised it is so few.

Re: 11 Brighton College pupils selected for Sussex Junior squads

So few? Surely a pre-requisite for selection for the Junior county squads is being selected for College 1XI? Therefore to have 11 players in one go would seem good to me.

What is disappointing is that of the above names only Adam Davies has been selected for the Academy and of the five others boys only Hugh Richards is likely to be in contention for a place in next year's Academy squad as things currently stand. Of the girls Georgia Adams and Sofie Cawley looks to have the best chance of being selected for the Academy in 2011.

In the last five years Michael and Andrew Thornely, Joe and Ollie Gatting, Matt Machan, Taylor, Colvin, Davies, James Chapman and Rollings have been selected for the Academy. In 2006 six of the twelve Academy players selected were from Brighton College and 4 of them have made into mens and womens full squad.

Only 6 boys from BC across all the age group squads doesn't seem too bad - but agree that the age old problem still persists where so-called "talent identification" really just means "current technical skill level identification"...

And current "behavioural" identification.

Talent and potential should be the only two things assessed by the selectors of these junior teams and we could expect, despite some school's recruitment policy, that these should be evenly distributed around the schools and across all the clubs in the county.

Incidentally, whilst on the subject, it would also be interesting to know the age profiles of the squads. I have long had a bee in my bonnet about the fact that those born in the first half of the year get a massive advantage as far as development is concerned yet they must also have only their fair share of the talent and potential. I hope we go scouting for kids born in July from state schools in Polegate.

2 points.

1. Those with a good technique (technical skill level?) have the best chance of success later on.
2. Why wouldn't they include 'behaviour' when selecting junior squads? 2 kids of equal talent, one knows how to behave himself the other doesn't - no brainer.

Re: 11 Brighton College pupils selected for Sussex Junior squads

Brighton College 1XI cricket averages 2009

Batting

AH Davies (+) 613 runs @ 56
HB Richards (+) 259 @ 37
JWC Chapman 450 @ 32
MEC Chapman * 388 @ 30 (Michael is the elder brother of James)
JN Thornely 266 @ 27 - (Michael and Andrew Thornely younger brother)

5 batsmen (Lenham, Thornely, Prior, Bazid Khan and Chris Gates) have scored 1,000 runs in the last 30 years. Thornely with 1,359 runs @ 90 and 6 100s was the last batsman to do this in 2005 and was appointed 1XI captain in 2006.

Bowling

FC Jordan 22w @ 17
A Hamid 15 @ 18
MEC Chapman * 14 @ 18
AJ Rawstrone 15 @ 18
AM Skan 18 @ 25

Adam Davies was the standout performer here and it is of no surprise that he has been named captain for 2010 and is in the Sussex Academy squad. Wicketkeeper Richards has been selected for Emerging Players Programme. Sophie Cawley and Kiran Rajkumar have also been selected for the Sussex Junior Squads along with Georgia Adams, Rebecca Silk, Tom Prideaux de Lacy, Tabitha Worsely, Owen Male, Dougie Glynne-Jones and Izi Noakes.

Seamer Jethro Mendies (21 wickets @ 14.8) has joined the College from Hurstpierpoint.

Re: 11 Brighton College pupils selected for Sussex Junior squads

Seamer Jethro Menzies ( more Scottish than South American, Mendies!!) came from Warden Park Comp, not Hurstpierpoint. He learnt his cricket at Ansty CC where many a talented cricketers in Mid Sussex come from & no I don't have any connection with this club. I sometimes feel that local clubs and schools who do the ground work get over looked when tallented cricketers join Brighton, Would be interesting to know how many come up all the way through the college and not just attracted or invited when talent becomes  above average?

Re: 11 Brighton College pupils selected for Sussex Junior squads

Barneyboo - You are quite right. I was referring to my copy of Wisden and on closer inspection the guy who took 21 wickets for Hurstpierpoint College is Josiah Menzies. Jethro should have a key role to play with Felix Jordan and Adam Rawstrone having left.

Having had time to digest those figures only Adam Davies emerged from last year with any credit.

On seperate note, I feel Ardingly College opening batsman Chris Parsons deserve a special word of praise for scoring 747 runs @ 62.25 last season.
