Surely Beer should get into the CC Ist team on merit; ie, if he is bowling well for the 2nds and in one-dayers... and Ollie and/or Monty are underperforming.  With young players knocking on the door the 1st XI must be a meritocracy, not a closed shop.

I agree Mentor. It's through his 2XI performances that I can see him getting in the championship team in the second half of the season when the pitches are turning. In the same way I expect Wells, Machan and Brown to be putting pressure on Gatting, Thornely and Hodd.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Quite agree. But it's an interesting point that, in the end, the answer to that question might be 'n/a'

i went for Gatting, but might be Thornely - so may not be a bowler at all

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Thought that was a typo when I read that! Could be inspired. What do those two bowl??

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

i think theyre both dibbly-dobblers

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Gatting is an off-spinner and Thornely is a medium pacer.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

General question - do the new ECB incentive rules come into effect this season - and if I remember correctly doesn't that mean that we should be trying to play some under 23's (at the expense of the over 26's) ?

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

have we sined him?

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

He has been given an extended trial in the seconds.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Any updates on this chappie, and forgive me as I forget his name, the lad from Guernsey that joined the club in the summer.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Chadwick has been playing for the seconds. In Hatchett, Adkin, Thorpe and Rollings we have four better seam bowling prospects. Tim Ravenscroft has played one game for the seconds scoring 3. Personally I think Jones and Endersby are better prospects.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Any further news on Chadwick or again, forgive me, the Irish chappie from Guernsey ?

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

yes, ow have they been performing? anyone seen them?

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Forgive me if this news has been announced or is on another thread, but are there any Sussex players likely to leave/out of contract at the end of this season?

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

all we know for certain are the retirements of Kirtley and RMJ - we know a few contracts are up for renewal - Hodd, Collymore & Brown I think - not sure about status of Aga & Liddle but they may be up for renewal - other one is Keegan, who sems to be out of favour

the rest are on longer contracts, I think

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Thanks Sweaty

I guess the Brown/Hodd situation is tricky to handle because they will both want to play regular first team cricket

Do you think Aga and Liddle will be renewed?  Would potentially free up some money to pay for Amjad plus others...

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Surely we have Kirtley, RMJ and RHB's wages to pay for at least a couple of new players.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

Unless the player budget is cut because of a reduction in t20 income next season

i believe aga is under contract for 2011.  anyon certainly is.  liddle? dunno.

brown has (currently) overtaken gatts with the bat. but does he see himself as a batsman or batsman-keeper?  probably the latter.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

It is a real possibility that the playing budget could be cut and players like RHB, RMJ and Kirtley may not be replaced. That would be a risky strategy though. We have lost many experienced players over the last 12 months, Lewry, Kirtley, RMJ, Hoppo, Dwayne Smith plus the talented RHB and effectively replaced them with Monty Panesar and James Anyon. Our other two recruits, the youngsters Luke Wells and Matt Machan are nowhere near ready for regular first team action. Some of the younger players who are further down the line have been given extended opportunities in the side and have struggled with consistency in the second division. We would I think find it very difficult to compete in the top division were that the case.

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

why is it likely that the playing budget will be cut?  did sussex lose money this year on t20?

or is it because of the ground redevelopment?

neither ! - the playing budget would reduce if number of 20/20 games reduced - otherwise should remain about the same

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

ah ok thanks Sweaty

I think the ground redevelopment has impacted on our playing budget.  Last year very few of the players received a raise.  Although we are chasing Sidebottom and Van Jaarsveld who would both cost over £100k each I would think.

I wonder how much Amjad Khan would command for a salary?

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

we dont have the same issues re ground development as money is donated rather than borrowed

Re: Michael Chadwick on trial

And presumably you don't have Eric Pickles on your case!
