Topic: Sussex v Northants Hove 7 - 10 September

Time to start a thread for our last home match of the season.

The table (with projections) is as follows-

Sussex : Current 208 + possible 48 = total 256
Glam : Current 189 + possible 48 = total 237
Worcs : Current 167 + possible 48 = total 215
Glos : Current 166 + possible 48 = total 214
Northants : Current 161 + possible 48 = total 209
Leicester : Current 155 + possible 48 = total 203
Middx : Current 150 + possible 24 = total 174
Surrey : Current 132 + possible 48 = total 180
Derby : Current 130 + possible 24 = total 154

Middlesex, Surrey and Derby are out of it. Leicester could still go up as runners up, and Worcs Glos and Northants are still just about in the mix.

We need 8 points maximum to assure promotion, but this will come down as and when Worcs and Glos drop bomus points. I hope our target is to go up as champions, in which case we need a maximum 30 points from our last two games. Again this threshold will come down as Glamorgan drop points, so just for once we should be hoping that Rory and Figjam do us a favour and if not thump Glamorgan at least take a good few points off them.

I think we could be celebrating at Hove by close of play on Tuesday.

poor weather forecast for this game again, but with a 19 point lead we are certainly in the pole position.I guess going in to the Worcs game needing only three points to clinch the title would provide sufficient excitement for the messageboard?

We have to replace Yardy with Prior  and find an all rounder again to replace Wright.This may mean three Keepers

Joyce,Nash,Brown,Goodwin,Prior,Hodd (at six?) Arafat,Rayner,Anyon,Panesar ,Collymore.

This suggests the team is a bit lopsided.

Anyway, not an easy selection this and it does depend on seam or spin – but without Luke we have a bit of a long tail. I reckon team will be

Certainly not!  Three reasons why I'd play him - firstly, there's a space with Yardy and Wright away, secondly, Hodd, Gatt and Thornely haven't really taken their chances, and finally, he's the only major performer from the seconds this season not to get a chance.  Of course being 19 possibly out weighs all of those things, rightly or, otherwise.

As for Anyon over Hatchett, why?

I think Sweaty's team will be correct. Boje has been out injured for Northants and they have a limited spin attack, therefore I would expect our groundsman to prepare a spinners paradise and for us to play both Monty and Ollie.

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.

Probaly because over the two Glamorgan Innings he was our best bowler.

I don't usually play the "guess the team" game, but just for once...

I'd stick with the team that played Glamorgan, with Prior replacing Yardy and playing just as a batsman, and Rayner replacing Wright. If Arafat is called up by Pakistan I'd bring in Hatchett.

I suppose RMJ wouldn't come out of retirement?

Hope as many supporters as possible will get along to Hove for our last home fixture,must say that the weather forecast is not inspiring but fingers crossed.
Anyon deserves to keep his place after the Glamorgan game and it looks as if the wicket at this time of season will be a used from earlier in season so would expect two spinners to be in evidence so would probably go with Sharkeys team above.
Hopefully by the game end we will be looking at definate promotion although it may take to the Worc game to go up as champions.
Most of us will take at the start of season an immediate return to Div 1 so lets get behind them and make sure it happens.

most of the team suggestions are about right - the truth is the cupboard is a bit bare.

not much to choose between gatts, thornley and brown but the latter deserves to keep his place (three keepers in the side!).

ditto not much between liddle, anyon, hatchett and adkin.  i might go for a left armer?   colly will have plenty of work.

ollie would be one of the first names on my team sheet.

the tail is a bit long for comfort.

The cupboard is a bit bare??? That's one view. Mine is that we've got an excellent and talented bunch of players who have won promotion this season and played some superb entertaining cricket.

Totally agree with aweparsons,the cupboard is definately not bare,we have seen many players in the last few games which i am sure we will see alot more of in the future,some of these have made huge impressions on away games and i am sure supporters who arent lucky enough to travel will next year enjoy more of these up and coming players on our return to the Div 1 level.
All these players have helped us become a very talented side which have covered well when when some of our senior players are not available through international duty.
Whilst obviously there will be some comings and goings in the close season the outlook is rosy and the shelves are not empty in the cupboard.

I think you're being a little generous with your superlatives. The transition period is still in its infancy and Sussex will be fortunate to remain in LV1 next season; and why Robbo is searching for outside seam bowlers to fill the loss of Kirtley and RMJ.

Hatchett and Adkin have shown promise but that is all. Gatting has had a disappointing 2010 after showing great potential last year. Re: wicketkeepers, Hodd has also had a poor season, although Brown shows recent promise.

Meanwhile, Thornley has disappeared from the 1st XI after early season form. In fact, of the so-called youngsters, Rayner has been the brightest spark, while poor old Beer has been discarded to the 2nd XI, after such a promising 2009.

Panesar has improved but still requires a minimum of 50 wickets this season before his signing is justified. Anyon has been a bit of this and that and hasn't exactly taken the club by storm.

Early season we relied on the form of RMJ and Rana to gain our championship wins. While, we still have no cover for Yardy or Wright in the batting department when off on England duty. Meanwhile, Goodwin is close to retirement and we certainly have no-one in the wings to cover his impending loss.

Realism is a word that sits more comfortably with me.

Interesting debate.In the CC we got off to a flier with Rana and RMj in peak form and got 4 wins.In the next 10 we have 3 wins, so its down to earth.

I believe we have seen a lot of potential in Hatchett,Adkin and Brown who we all hope will have great futures.Beer and Rayner still have room for improvement but met all expectations.

Its in the batting we have been light.Thornley and Gatting have been disppointing(no I am not writing them off but their CC performances this season are way below what is expected of a front line batsman to hold a place),such that Hodd gets picked as a batsman in proposed teams above which have 3 keepers and look a batsman light. Hodd is a good keeper /batsman but not #6.For me its Hodd or Brown at 7 and we are a batsman/allrounder short.

Missing Yardy and wright really upsets the balance, but does give otherds a chance to stake a claim

yes the young bowlers have shown more than the young batsmen - Fawden goes on about Luke Wells, so maybe worth giving him an outing in the last match if its practical - i also think the latter's ability to bowl a few overs may make him the more appropriate replacement for Yardy in one-day cricket

If Prior is free to keep wicket, then picking Wells instead of Hodd would be tempting, but judging from the fact he didn't keep in the one day game, he probably won't for the remainder of the season.  They could give Brown the gloves but it would be difficult to keep and bat at 3 for such a young lad.

Nash, Joyce, Brown, Goodwin, Prior+, Wells, Arafat, Rayner, Anyon, Panesar, Collymore would do me fine

What expectations did you have from Beer - most of us expected him to continue to progress and show what he could do in the championship - especially as we are in Div 2.  I really dont know how you can say he has met expectations when he hasnt been given a chance to do so.  A few 20-20 games - and he was one of our most economical bowlers - then banished to the seconds.  I think you have to accept - as I do - that Panesar has had an OK season - but at the expense of any expectations we had for Beer.

Beer can only do what is asked...he performed well when given the opportunty.He also did well in the seconds and made considerable strides with his batting.

As far as I can see that is meeting expectations.The fact that he wasnt risked or given an opportunity in the county championship cant be held against him.I dont speak for the selectors so dont wish to be drawn into a debate about whether he is ready and whether the club is overly protective...all I can judge is on what he was asked to do and it seems to me he did that well.Ollie too didnt get to play every game but did make some progress with his batting and bowling. Anyon too has met my expectations in that he has taken his wickets at reasonable cost and fulfilled his role pretty well.
Cant really comment on Aga or Liddle because they played so little but I would have liked them to have achieved more.
   I believe the most important achievement of Beer ,Brown,Adkin and Hatchett is that they looked the part...not out of their depth at all.

No - we all had much higher expextations of Beer than he has had the chance to develop and show.  I think some you of just cant admit - that the signing of Panesar - whether or not it is a good thing for the club as a whole - has held Beer back.  Before we signed Panesar everyone said how much they were looking forward to seeing Beer performing regularly in all forms of the game this season - and how much promise he had.  Now you are saying he lived up to your epectations - that is just as cop out because you wont admit a downside to the Panesar signing - for obvious reasons.  Take the blinkers off - there are pros and cons to most things.
