Any tolerance I've tried to find is being severely tested.

To be fair, given the NotW's record on creative journalism in the past, it is reasonable for Pakistan to take a cautious line when it comes to banning them on this 'evidence'.

For all we know, the picture quality isn't great, so it could be that they paid an actor who looked like the bloke to be in a film for them. It was released after the event of the no balls, so no guarantee that it wasn't filmed after too.

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

Just watched the Pakistan high commissionaire giving a statement, they are innocent until proved guilty, they maintain their innocence, he believes them and they have not been dropped or suspended, they have asked to be rested because of the mental torture they have suffered, they are not in the right frame of mind because of all the media frenzy and false accusations.
UNBELIEVABLE roll

Then you see Giles Clarke giving a statement.
Is there a more bumptious, plum in the mouth, waste of space in sport.
And as for the bloody haircut.

Who is that man talking to Schlidd ?

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

But wasn't this their only option? No-one's remotely organised enough yet on the charges, so it had to be done using the 'resting' argument

Just picked myself off the floor after falling off my chair laughing. I can't believe your post starts with "to be fair" and then such drivel spews forth. Priceless.

Whilst the rest is written a bit tongue in cheek, you cannot deny that the NotW's record in the past is not good. Many a time they have invented something then hoped to hide behind Murdoch's millions if anyone thinks of suing them.

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

hc,

I cannot remember anything in cricket that has made my blood curl more than this Pakistan scandal - well apart from Adams tapping RHB!  wink

For the Pakistan High Commissioner to come out and refute the video by stating it was a set up job and made after the event is beyond belief. Once more Pakistan is playing the victim role which is the cheapest, most cowardly act of all. One they keep repeating year after year. The 2006 'Oval' Test being a classic example. My views on Darrell Hair have changed since this most recent scandal. He was persecuted in the media because he had the courage to stand up and say to Pakistan cricket, "Enough is enough."

Never have I seen such denial from the Pakistan authorities with so many heads buried in the sand.

The fact is, corruption within Pakistan cricket reaches the highest levels of authority. Just as Italy were controlled and dominated by the Mafia, so Pakistan is ruled and cajoled by the Asian underworld and their sinister betting syndicates. What really riles me is the sheer cowardice shown by the authorities. Obviously, they have no intention of looking deeper than the top soil. Why? Because they are too scared, too ashamed of what they will find. A country that has been corrupted to its very core.

I take Michael Vaughan's view. Give life bans to those cricketers found guilty and get to the very heart of the betting syndicate corruption which has destroyed the integrity of a once proud nation. Sadly, neither will happen and Pakistan cricket will continue to stumble and lurch from one scandal to another.

I for one, will never take another Pakistan cricket match and its outcome against any side seriously. And in future, I will avoid watching such events.

Well this has started today, I believe its a 4 match series and I think could be interesting - Pakistan have some decent bowlers and a fragile batting line-up, whilst England look strong batting but not so strong in their bowling - these series always seem to have some sort of controversy as well !

The farce continues:

Meanwhile, this article sums up how paranoid Pakistan have become. In their eyes, it is the great conspiracy of the West, prompted by India, against their poor crippled nation. All the angst of years of repression is now bubbling to the surface.

To play the victim is sad enough, but to see an entire nation embracing this victimhood role is even sadder.

Big D,

Even more bizarre, I have just returned from having my haircut with a barber I've known for years, and he claims he used to cut the hair of Mazher Majeed and his brother Azhar.

"Maz" to his friends, allegedly he has been embroiled in shady sports deals for years. My barber said he would come in giving out horse racing tips and the like. As he said, "I wish I had taken Maz seriously!"

In his opinion, Majeed has always been as bent as a bottle of chips.

Meanwhile, common sense prevails:

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

Sweaty,

I realised quite quickly after doing some research. My barber was wrong with that piece of info, although an understandable mistake. Even so, Maz Majeed has done more harm to Croydon than Chas Majeed to Crawley.

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

Also from today's Daily Telegraph (in the crime section):

"Further revelations this weekend are expected to focus on four more Pakistan cricketers, and claims that the team would deliberately lose two coming one-day matches."

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

It will be interesting to see if 'The News of the World' have further revelations in tomorrow's paper. I presume that is what the 'Daily Telegraph' are referring to.

I had to smile. An interview with Glamorgan's cricket hierarchy on the BBC website was a rather sober affair. Since the scandal broke, ticket sales are way down for tomorrow's T20 along with the second one; the club are worried whether they'll break even. Although, they did say, that when news broke on Thursday that the 3 accused Pakistan cricketers wouldn't play, sales had somewhat improved.

Meanwhile, on 'ITV News' last night, a journalist claimed, ticket sales for the match "had surged!" due to the clamour surrounding the scandal.

Who do you believe?   tongue

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

There does seem to be an awful lot of smoke now, for there to be no fire....

As many have quite sensibly said on these boards, these seven limited overs fixtures really shouldn't be going ahead. Gate and TV receipts talk though. All very sad and a kick in the knackers for cricket.

The fixing cancer had better be wiped out this time, but are the ICC strong enough ?

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

I'm sitting at home reading the Sunday Telegraph and I came across this piece by Scyld Berry. It has left me feeling thoroughly depressed. Particularly the following paragraph which leaves me wondering about just what we've been watching in some televised games. I still can't forget watching last season's Somerset v Essex Pro40 and thinking it looked very, very suspicious.

"The rumours of match-fixing and spot-fixing that are circulating now, about international matches around the world and about English domestic matches that have been televised in India, are simply too numerous to be dismissed."

Scyld Berry's article in The Sunday Telegraph

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

As someone who is a bit left-field I was never that keen on the old school MCC when they ruled the world of cricket.

I have changed my mind.

life member - you're stuck with me!

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

The problem with cricket, is that it's perhaps the easiest sport to spot-fix. You need just one corrupt bowler and you're away. No-balls, wides, bouncers... Add to that a bent captain, the wicket-keeper, and a couple of other players, and spot-fixing becomes rife. Dropped catches, the number of byes, batsmen getting out below a certain total, runs scored in an over... the list is endless.

Therefore, do you ban spot-fixing from cricket gambling? That, in my view, is the way forward. But how would you achieve it?

Re: Eng v Pakistan test series

a lot of the gambling is illegal anyway so what would a ban achieve?
