Re: Sussex v Surey pro 40 Sat 4th Sept
Honours even. 240-8 after 40 overs. We didn't lose so could have been worse. Big cheer for James Kirtley. Sussex legend.

Fantastic effort from Rayner at the end to earn a tie for Sussex. Goodwin and Nash also batted well. I was surprised to see 18 year old debutant Ansari bowl in the 38th over. Perhaps he should have bowled the last as the more experienced Linley went for 15.
A good innings by the promising Jason Roy. With Roy, Lancefield and Ansari coming through I wonder what the future holds for Afzaal and Walters.
A heartfelt goodbye to James
Also, first time since 2005 we haven't won a 'frontline' trophy ![]()
We were a batsman light.
We were a batsman light.
We were missing Yardy and Wright. This is no slur on Goodwin but I felt we particularly missed Yardy's superb captaincy skills.
I take solace in the fact that it didn't matter in the end as far as progressing was concerned. I agree that Yardy and Wright would have made the difference, especially Yardy but credit to Surrey I guess for making life difficult. We ain't done too badly in this 40 over comp lately so not going to be too unhappy about missing out this season. Promotion was the target and that looks like it's in the bag. Anything else was a bonus.
What a great advert for cricket. Pietersen scores an imperious 100. He played so within himself I thought he might implode. And when bored KP hit sixes to order. Why can't he play like this every innings? I was amazed when his hundred came up in only 101 balls. Pietersen literally strolled through the innings; that's how easy it was for him. Delighted Kirtley got his wicket though.
And as for the tie, given the match was redundant after Essex easily beat Yorkshire, a great piece of entertainment and another excellent knock by Rayner.
All in all, a great day's cricket, especially when Hove was packed to the deckchairs.

I thought Afzaal was already going.

Thats why I think this stint in county will be so good for him. It will be a matter of pride to not get out.
Hopefully he will then realise that it should be the same attitude at international level.
a good and fun afternoon in the early autumn sunshine.
well batted ollie at the death. a tie is probably a very fair result for the large crowd.
many thanks james (again) and good luck!
griz seems to be working his magic at surrey - they looked the makings of a decent outfit as they did at arundel in the t20. they have a few exciting youngsters bursting through.
if kp can take a ton off us he will make zillions against the aussies!
a really enjoyable day out and a good match - we established very early that there was little chance of qualification - quite a few postives including Liddles bowling, Ollies cameo innings but the day belonged to team man - the ever-modest and self-effacing James Kirtley - a true all-time Sussex great (and a great last victim for him)
My wish for this weekend, A Hat-Trick for Ambi.
Rory, Ramps and Figjam, I would give my right B*****k to see that.
Not a hat trick, but two out of three ain't bad!
an enjoyable day and a good knock by KP and great little cameo by Ollie but the day belonged to another Sussex great so thanks James Kirtley . A great servant of Sussex , so now only Muz is left of the oldens .
A thoroughly good day out. The ground must have been close to full, so the club's finances should have had an unexpected boost.
I enjoyed:
The look on RHB's face as he returned to the pavillion, out 4th ball for 12
Gary Wilson failing to control his temper as he got back to the pavillion, having been run out by Figjam.
James' last wicket - Figjams stumps rearranged by the tradmark yorker
RHB having Murray caught off a full bunger, only to find out that he'd be no-balled
We definitely missed Luke and Yards (and RMJ, for that matter) and we would have won if they had been available. As it was I think we were gifted the tie thanks to RHM bowling Linley in the last over. He's a trundler! (and in the field he makes Monty look like Usain Bolt)
A perfect afternoon for James' last hurrah with Hove looking a picture in the sun and a large expectant family crowd. He led his team out to a lengthy standing ovation and when he left the field for the last time every member of the squad, junior and senior alike, and all the backroom staff, stood as one to salute their own. While KP was magnificent and had his own journey, this day was all about James. Thank you for your delivering your plans and executing your skills to the nth degree and for the magical memories which will become folklore in the history of our magnificent club.
what a great day. Lovly weather just a shame we played are power play 5 overs late. But as a win would of made no odds who cares. And what a way to end. At 38 i was ready to leave to beat the rush and so glad i stayed after diging the hole to get the draw felt like a win.
Roll on next year.
A great day and a great match, wether you were there for a true Sussex legends last game[pity so many fans both young and old were left without his wanted signature at end]or there to see KP,find some wonderful form,it was a wonderful afternoons cricket which probably ended in a fair outcome.
Great to see Liddles bowling performance which must show hes worth a continuing look, and a few other notable batting performances from Nashy,Muzza and Ollie.
Also great to see RHB continues to show no understanding of the game and only knows the bish bosh game, and then expects everyone to feel sorry for him with the slowest retreat from the middle having been caught playing a most predictable shot ever to a fielder placed for him 30 saconds earlier.A player who still has a lot to learn.
bailed-out, matt didn't do much better than rbh?
mbts?? - yasir didnt do much better than rhb either yesterday, and extras did just as well as rhb in this game ... great game , enjoy!
Mike-by-the-sea,
Totally agree that Matt didnt do much better, but Matt dosent take 20 mins to leave the middle. Its just that RHB uses the same slow exit walk expecting people to feel sorry for him when hes out.In my view he chose to take the captaincy at Surrey, and we have debated this long and hard on this board wether it was right or wrong, but hes made no real progress with his game which i believe is very sad.He plays one way in all formats,if he comes off we are told what a great player but how often over the season has he come off in all forms?
Well done to Ollie, a cracking innings at the end, and not for the first time this season. He's beggining to show some real promise.
KP showed that for quality batsmen, you don't need to "bish-bosh", "wham-bam" every ball in a Pro40 game.
Pietersen ambled through his innings at a leisurely pace. Played the good balls sensibly and dispatched the bad ones accordingly; yet he still managed 100 in 101 balls. Given the number of walked singles, quite a feat. I only remember one loose shot. In fact, he only lashed out right at the end, and lo and behold got bowled.
Surely, this is a lesson to the likes of Prior, Nash, Wright etc..? Play each ball on merit and you can still score a 50 in less than 50 balls. The way RHB batted yesterday was absurd. 3 fours in a row and then you're out. What kind of stupid batting attitude is that? We know he is a highly talented player. What a waste of this talent. If he played like KP yesterday RHB could be scoring regular 50s and 100s.
Why try and knock the shine off every ball? It makes no sense. In my view, it is more laziness and not taking responsibility. As if, along with T20, Pro40 is just an excuse to have a swing and a miss. Some days you get lucky, while others you don't. RHB has a lot to learn.

That is an excellent post. I agree with every word of it. Spot on about the lessons to be learned from KPs method and the continued frittering of RHBs talent is an absolute disgrace.

Great day out yesterday.
Back to the Oval next week.
