Topic: Team stability

They say you dont change a winning team. However this season call ups and injuries have been very disruptive.

20 players have represented Sussex in the CC and only 4 more than 9 times in 14 games.Hopefully next seaon we can have a more settled team.

The spin off is that many more players have been given an opportunity. Some more successfully than others with no immediate replacement for RMJ or callups being obvious.

Re: Team stability

tc,

As discussed before, when you have your three best players regularly disappearing on England duty, this must cause inconsistency and disruptiveness to any county side. And why we weren't competitive in the ODs towards the end.

The averages are most interesting. Typical that RMJ is our best overall performer yet he's now retired and a teacher! Pity Nash hasn't a 40+ batting average after his excellent previous season; Goodwin and Joyce is what you'd expect. One would have hoped for more from Yardy, but his ODI performances disrupted his championship form; and it took him awhile to readjust. Both Thornley and Gatting have been disappointments but what a late and most welcome come-back from Brown.

As to bowlers Collymore has rediscovered his enthusiasm and the wickets express this. As for Monty, he requires another 6 wickets from the last 2 matches to make his signing justified, in my view - especially given the number of overs bowled. If memory serves Mushy gained double the amount of wickets Monty has achieved this season with a similar number of overs bowled; although, I accept, it is unfair to compare one with the other.

My feeling is, we may see more of Wright next season, while Prior and Yardy will continue their England service.

"Now the stumps have asked for pads!"
(Aussie radio commentator Kerry O'Keeffe as Rahul Dravid, bowled six times in seven innings during the present series, walks out to bat at the Adelaide Oval)

I think Monty is ahead of where Robbo would have thought he would be at this moment in time.  Monty was and is a long term investment - he should not be judged on the basis of one season.  His confidence had taken a big hit having lost his England place, then lost his central contract and then being let go by a journeymen county.  Robbo took a calculated gamble and it was uncertain how long it would be before Monty approached his old form.  He's done a good job and is by no means the rabbit with the bat that many thought he would be.  He can continue to make further progress in the years ahead.

The only question I have is whether Monty should be our number 1 spinner in the shorter formats.  I accept Robbo's argument that he wants to prevent Will Beer becoming too much of a defensive bowler as a result of one day cricket but the problem is that he is instinctively more suited to the shorter formats than Monty.  Ollie Rayner adds another dimension with his aggressive batting.

bit harsh s&f -  as if by magic Nash's average in the  link above is now over 40 (the season ain't over yet), and Thornley scores another personal best in the championship so making steady progress
