I think Rana is more valuable to Sussex than Yasir. He is the more penetrative bowler and his stats for Sussex are first rate, e.g.:
1st Class Matches
Played 34 Wickets 159 @ 22.94 (Career average 24.17)
List A Matches
Played 31 Wickets 58 @ 20.36 (Career 26.91)
These compare with Yasir:
1st Class Matches
Played 22 Wickets 89 @ 28.49 (Career 23.68)
List A Matches
Played 29 Wickets 44 @ 27.75 (Career 25.09)
Yasir will be missed most in the Twenty20 and at the top of the batting tail. He has averaged 35.86 in Sussex 1st class games against Rana's 21.84. I wish him luck at Surrey.
35.86! Are you sure? I don't remember him doing that well. Even with a lot of unbeaten 20 odds that's a good figure.
Interestingly, Arafat's done worse for us than his overall average suggests he's done for others, and vice-versa for Rana. Good luck to Arafat but I'm very happy with the arrangement.
These are the 1st Class Batting Numbers for Yasir at Sussex:
2006 Played 8 Innings 12 NotOut 3 Runs 390 Ave 43.3
2009 Played 5 Innings 5 NotOut 0 Runs 108 Ave 21.6
2010 Played 9 Innings 9 NotOut 2 Runs 255 Ave 36.4
Overall: Dismissed 21 times for 753 Runs.
So an average of 35.86
I was surprised as well and needed to check the sums. I wonder whether the most was made of Yasir's batting skills at Hove.
In his 2 years at Kent he averaged 29.38 in 1st Class games
What a great quote from Rana in the Wisden Cricketer: “I love playing for Sussex,” said Rana. “The guys here inspire me to do my best and I think Twenty20 is a game which suits the skills I have, like bowling good slower balls and yorkers.
“Nothing has been decided about the future. The club is still waiting to hear about Umar Gul so if they want me to stay I’m sure I will.
“We have a good Twenty20 team and I’m sure we can get to the finals. Guys like Ed Joyce, Kirk Wernars, Naveed Arif and Ollie Rayner cannot get into the team at the moment which shows the strength we have.”
In a Sussex shirt he is an irresistible force.
