They are still deep in it. Profit is a bit illusory - lots of one offs. Forecast breakeven next year. Key problem they have is they simply dont generate enough of their own revenue.
Northants also declare a 20k profit - but think, probably like Kent, this was after the ECB grant to NTMGs. Some papering over cracks going on here.
"I don't see why you can't follow two teams, as many do in football, especially if the second is only 'alive' for 5 weeks of the year. Who says anything about going to the ground"
But thats the issue. Cricket fans wont go. Maybe non cricket fans will be attracted to the razmattaz of something new.
But new things get old and, if you arent a cricket fan, its still cricket. So they drift away as well.
Which leaves noone by my maths.
I left London just in time Chris. Though I reckon the psycho we've just signed from Manchester United might add a bit of much needed flair. Loved the way they spent a relative fortune on attackers on deadline day - and promptly shipped 5 v Ipswich.
This is a rubbsh analogy but what the hell. I am a West Ham fan. Whle I lived in London I went to just about every home game and quite a few away.
I now live in Oswestry so hardly get to see them. I live one hour fron Manchester so could see United or City every week. Compared to West Ham, lets face it, these are "franchise" clubs with stars from all over the world. They offer all the advantages of S&fs franchise clubs over a county team I reckon.
Yet Ive never bothered to go once and doubt if I ever will for all the tribal reasons people have mentioned on this thread. I wouldnt be involved, I wouldnt care so why bother? Roonet could score from an overhead kick 25 yards out and Id applaud. But when Carlton Cole bundles one in fron two yards, I hit the roof. Its different.
Think another thing he offers is also the occasional miracle. No game is ever totally lost while hes batting. And no target is too big either. Feisty bugger as well.

Really, really poor and not the performance of a team that holds the no1 ranking in test cricket.
Seems like the Aussies are a bit better than we thought, the Indians not as good as we thought they were, the Pakistani's better than expected and we certainly aren't as good as we thought.
Morgan needs to get his head around batting in the longer game and work hard now, I'd bypass RavBop and stick James Taylor in at 6.
Agree with much of this especially with replacing Morgan with Taylor at 6.
Maybe but its a deeper issue. Best spin bowler Taylor probably faced last year was Treadwell. Its no preparation for facing this lot.
Clubs sometimes have no choice but to seek public money. For a test ground like us, with no absolute guarantee of tests, it was impossible to get loans from banks - who want a good degree of certainty of income.
Actually think the opposite - the all or nothing is the guarantee that it will all go through because a lot of countes will happily swap a home CC game for 2 home t20s.
Vaguely interesting that Strauss' form has gone to pot since he stopped playing one day cricket (he hardly plays any cricket at all now) and that our troubles in the first test were put down to being rusty after all that time off.
Yet at the same time more rest is meant to make players better.
Dont think Careberry can travel abroad with his blood clot problems.
Maybe Strauss should simply play a bit more cricket to sort himslef out?

The theory is right but the practise is wrong.
Not one of those was an overseas player were they?
Yes, they all were. They came from SA and Kenya, which is overseas. I'm pretty sure that at least two of them played as Kolpaks as well, which equates to poor OS players playing in county cricket through some shite EU rule.
Of course, there were plenty of good ones, can't deny that, but too many of any standard were showing up. As I said, the theory is right but they've cocked up the practise.
Cross purposes then. I was talking about the restrictions on the one overseas player all counties are allowed - the rules that rule out Van Der Merwe for no good reason.
Not the perfectly legitimate employment of others from outside these shores under EU law
Not sure who should replace or if he should have more time him but he is a bit dissapointing.
Media spoilt for choice for scapegoats after today - Morgs, KP or Strauss.

Sharkey wrote:I think were put in place to try and improve the quality of overseas players and remove the low quality overseas player we saw a few years back.
Who were these low quality overseas player?
Not doubting this was the dubious thinking but Im pretty sure Mark Robinson doesnt need some ECB troll protecting him from some crazed desire to sign overseas dross.
As the old saying goes these rules would have stopped Somerset signing Viv Richards; and they sure as hell dont seem to be helping Sussex now.
Insurance Man wrote:It always amazes me how people can write something and then it becomes fact, the truth, the reality. Steve James states...
Spectators are up in arms, so it seems, but Morgan’s Review is more thorough than any other investigation into county cricket I can recall. The fan, contrary to his or her common opinion, is given more than due consideration with Morgan’s “appointment to view”.
So I as a fan think my opinion counts for naught yet Steve James sitting in his Telegraph office thinks it has been given more than due consideration. What a nerve!
Like many on here I would prefer 16 CCC matches per season but if it has to be 14 then why can't it be organised to keep the integrity of the competition. I don't need Steve James telling me in a couple of seasons I will have forgotten all about it. What do they think we fans are, mindless morons that are incapable of intelligent thought?
After so many changes in recent years it is hard to believe in anything but there seems little in this Report that will benefit the players, it doesn't seem as if they'll will be playing much less cricket.
It will be in Division one with 8 teams.
Diviison two however will become a farce - with 10 teams chasing two (or maybe one) promotion spot, not everyone playing everyone twice, and a proposed increase in fees for playing young players, a lot of counties will give up the CC half way through the year. Bet this increases movement of players to the top clubs as well. We will end up with an elite like in football.

Steve may well be right on some of this.
But Ive yet to see anyone say why Morgan is good as opposed to not so bad. Obv Cooks view, if accepted, smashes the key argument in favour of 50 overs - which leaves the report being all about giving about 2 days rest and a guess that 14 days T20 is better than 10 but not as bad as 16 (for about 15 of the 18 counties).
Chnage needs more positives than that surely.

Morgan evidently does propose in Cc 2 divs of 9 playing 14 games .
In 50 overs 2 divs of 10 playing each other once ie 9 games but every team plays a10th game ie they play a team from the other division!!!!!!!!!
No idea how this idiot Morgan proposes that 18 teams play 14 games of 2020.I could look it up but frankly do not give a toss how much 2020 is played .I do know sky will want it played in the middle of the summer when there is no football.
PLEASE MR MAY AND MR BROOKS TELL US YOU AND THE COUNTIES ARE NOT GOING ALONG WITH THIS FARCE???????????
Think theres a strong view that the ECB are going to force Morgan through, whatever. They are showing they are leaders in the game.
Theyve also made it diffcult by insisting it goes through in its entirity or not at all.
That looks like a dilemma for many counties to me. Commercially getting 2 extra home T20 games in place of one cc match is pretty attractive for many Id think.
Warcks final figure was a retained loss of nearly 700k after tax credits and payments to their new catering partners.
Quite the opposite Id think Ards.
Finn for Tremlett maybe but they arent going to weaken the batting after this.
Heaven help us if we actually play on a turning pitch next time.
softandfluffy wrote:Kim,
Stuart Wilde of 'The Sunday Times' mentioned this. It is the defence being used by the ECB.
Scyld Berry states in his article: "...and subsidises county cricket to the tune of several million pounds a season. Without it, several belts would have to be tightened."
If he is correct, then the Asian package deal which apart from international Tests, T20s and ODIs also covers 60 county cricket 'live' domestic games (CB40 and T20) is worth to the clubs around £2m a year.
I don't accept this is a sufficient amount of money to weigh up against the potential spot and match fixing. It will cost far far more to investigate and then prosecute the cheats along with policing it in the future. £2m versus say £10m? It makes no financial sense, at all.
The Mervyn Westfield case was dragged through the courts for several years and cost us, the taxpayer, ££100s of thousands alone as he used legal aid.
As for all these illegal websites, the vast majority show international games and not county cricket. Is there evidence of any being closed down because they were illegally showing our domestic game?http://www.rapidtvnews.com/index.php/rt
ralia.html
Point is they could use the internet so the game would be giving up 30 million for nothing. Do you really want Sussex to lose 2 milion because Mervyn Westfied was stupid - and others might be?
And where do you draw the line?
Should we not screen England at home against India because theres a chance of a spot fix?
Last time Monty played with Swann Aussies got over 700. Time before WI got 500 odd. Both times we played 2 because they thought it would turn. As both were under Flower Id guess thats another reason why hes reluctant.
Think there's a danger of arguing that because we batted badly against spin we should play an extra spinner. Which doesnt make sense. I dont think it turned much, if at all - and the problem with Amjal is that he turns it both ways - which neither of ours do.
So I dont really see the arguments for 2 spinners.
I think who the one spinner should be is going to be an issue soon though.
softandfluffy wrote:I am delighted Scyld Berry of 'The Telegraph' agrees with me. (See post 238)
'ECB should blame itself for spot-fixing arriving here'
"A Pandora’s box was opened when the ECB did a broadcasting deal which allowed all cricket matches televised in England — not just the internationals but many county games as well — to be broadcast live in India. That is not called asking for trouble; it is inviting trouble into your house and offering it an armchair."

What Scyld forgets is the internet. The ECB closed over 700 websites last year that were illegally showing games. Giving up the broadcasting deal would cost a hell of a lot of money and not solve the problem - just move it even more on line.
I think Matty has broken an English record today (can check later).
Its the 3rd time he has scored more at 7 than the top 6 combined. All v Pakistan

-pakistan good against spinners
Pakistan are using both Hafeez and Rehman already in their attack ,
3 maidens from hafeez and a wicket in four overs
Rehman starts with a maiden against KP
Just sticking to what has worked so well for so long. Also he wouldnt be bowling to our batsman who have made this pitch look a lot, lot worse than it is. Preached patience but havent shown much and some poor shots. V. good from Matt though.
The disasters the last couple of times theyve played two spinners must put them off as well.
