Context and circumstances change...my reference was to Warwickshire in the 1960s. Dobells reference is to Kolpaks in 2006. But you knew that. And he wasnt agreeing with the position taken. But if you are happy that my comments are wrong thats fine.

The catch 22 for Kolpaks ensures they will die out.If you atre not grandfathered like Murray or Corey then you need to be a current international to get a work permit. But to Kolpak you give up playing International cricket and thus lose your qualification as Dwayne did.

The work permit rules are stringent and given the international calendar fewer and fewer players who qualify are available.

No wonder clubs look for European passpord holders who are entitled to work in UK. (like sandri,Voros, Aga ,Wernars etc). Given the number of Counties providing employment and the ECB subsidies it seems implausible that these non England qualified players could be holding back anybody who might play for England one day. And I have no explanation for you as to why England prospect Thornley cannot find a county, other than he hasnt convinced a county he is good enough.
If the recruitment of EU passportholders doesnt hold back possible England players its not a serious issue.

Back in the day when Warwickshire played 5 west Indians in their team (Murray,Kalicharan,Gibbs,Kanhai and Bill Bourne ) as well as Billy Ibadulla nobody seemed worried that they wre keeping out local talent.

How do you know that?  I bet there were plenty.  Overseas and Kolpaks are going to get rarer and rarer - I just hope we decide to rely on our local talent, Academy and 2nd XI rather than scrape the bottom of the overseas and Kolpak barrel.  There is already talk on this board - OK not too serious - of bringing in a spinner in case Panesar plays for England in the Summer.  Tragic but plausible.

How do I know? well I read a lot and talk to people who played for Warwickshire in those days and generally try to find educated opinions.Take George Dobells view for example

Really dont know what is going on with Jamaicans...remember they are still being pulled apart by the Chris Gayle and Jerome Taylor issues and divided loyalties.

Nobody who watched that final could help but be amazed by the passion, camaradarie and shear joy shown by the Trinidadian team. Jamaica dropped four catches but their batting never challenged the total.Team spirit usually looks good when you are winning.

Both Keiron Pollard and dwayne Bravo returned from big Bash to play for Trinidad. Keiron Pollard was unable to confirm for Somerset because he "might" be needed by WI and wanted to be available. But there can be no doubt there is a great deal more team spirit in the Trinidad and Tobago squad than in West Indies team.

Trinidad produce an imperious display to crush Jamiaca

Trinidad 166-6 Jamaica 105-5...but all over as they were strangled in the first 10 and had only 40 odd

My impression is that there is a little more teamwork and passion when the players are with their regional sides, as to when they are playing for WI.

I also think that the demise of Caribbean cricket has not been as marked in T20 cricket, where the natural flair and athleticism of cricketers from the islands is especially suited to the format.  tc might correct me on this.

Because of this I think the best regional sides are very effective, as they have proved in Champions League etc

Astute and accurate comments I think. There is certainly more harmony and bonding in the Trinidad dressing room than in West Indies. And we were fortunate to have Bravo and Pollard in Barbados and not in Big bash

Filby-how can you get me more signature cards?...you are not on e-mail?

A full Sussex side would have to play very well to beat Trinidad or Jamaica. But what do I know.

Good performance by Trinidad to silence a full house by bowling out Barbados for 90.

The final is Jamaica v Trinidad & Tobago.

Third place match will be Windwards V Barbados

Ive watched every game on ESPN and no matter whether you think this trip was a good or bad idea, there is no escaping the fact that our batting has been woeful.  Ben Brown with the bat and gloves and Beero, Lidds and Gondol (when fit) with the ball were the only players to do themselves any sort of justice. No matter how you dress this up, we really did not perform very well at all out there.  A wake up call for many I suspect.

This is true...Very badly outclassed in the group and finishing joint bottom of 5 with only one win must be disappointing. I will leave it the faithful to assess performances but even the catching was below par.Perhaps only Will Beer met expectations.Liddle also looked more than handy.

Despite this it was obviously a good opportunity for the younger players to get some exposure and must have been a great experience for them all. The results count for nothing except the learning.

What a night to remember at a packed Kensington oval. it was a privilege to be at a place where cricket means so much. Masterful work by Brooksy and Robbo to lay this opportunity on for the Sussex lads. An evening they must set as a benchmark for what cricket can offer. Our t20 international matched theirs and the rest now have a clear indication of the learning gap. What a joy it is going to be to see them close it.

I knew England wouldn't pick two spinners as they don't want to go into a test match with only two seamers in case one breaks down in the first day of the test match. With Bresnan out playing five bowlers wasn't an option. No disrespect to Panesar but he is no Ajmal! Ajmal defeated the England batsmen before a ball was even bowled as they are bamboozled by the mystery spinner. The biggest mystery is the fact that he doesn't actually spin the ball and that if they played him as a slow bowler they wouldn't get out! Their left arm spinner didn't do much. It will be interesting to see how Swann a more orthodox off-spinner does this on this pitch. I'm not sure he will enjoy the same amount of success as Ajmal.

Actually you posted "your team" so you decided it was best to leave out Monty.

Panesar is no Ajmal....but Ajmal doesnt actually spin the ball  ?  Doh

Monty is a luxury because we play batsmen who cant play spin so we dont have room to play two spinners.Maybe an allrounder would help like Bopara or Fat Sam. But if Monty wasnt picked today he is unlikely to be picked until Swan breaks a leg.

"A Pandora’s box was opened when the ECB did a broadcasting deal which allowed all cricket matches televised in England — not just the internationals but many county games as well — to be broadcast live in India. That is not called asking for trouble; it is inviting trouble into your house and offering it an armchair."

Cant agree at all...showing cricket live on TV doesnt mean people have to cheat. And the game needs the revenue.

Good job they dont like horse racing.

But to be fair 6500 turned out to watch Sussex v Combined campuses(UWI) and only 650 turned out for the test match. Maybe England should be playing in Antigua?

The WICB confirmed that total attendance for the six days exceeded 42,000 with the largest turnout being on Saturday evening when over 9000 fans gathered at the SVRCG.

On the previous night just over 8500 fans came out with the other matches being viewed by over 6000 fans each evening.

“The attendance by the fans in Antigua has exceeded all our expectations. The turnout has been tremendous and the fact that attendance numbers every night this year have bettered the best night last year is indisputable evidence that Caribbean T20 is getting bigger year after year,” WICB Events Manager Cindy McLean said.

What do the players do in England at this time of year, anyway - do they do much - ive no idea - I would have thought a bit of actual playing would be better than a load of indoor nets even if pitches werent great - must be good for some of the youngsters to get some first-team experience as well, as many have already said.

Well I did see Brooksy interviewed on ESPN just before the game.He was asked that question and replied that most of the squad would be away doing other stuff( he didnt mention playing football for Whitehawk). He did say that Sussex had great indoor facilities and nets and that those who were available would be training and practising. However playing with themselves in indoor nets was hardly considered a learning experience when compared to the opportunity to play in real conditions against real opposition. So whatever the result he was well satisfied that this was an excellent trip providing absolutely everything they had hoped for.

Ps you will note the mimum wage is expressed for yearly contracts or seasonal contracts
http://www.thepca.co.uk/minimum_wages.html
You must remember that not all counties provide annual contracts and that many players had other jobs in the winter. Certainly until recently Sussex did not provide full year contracts.

Kent Exile..I bow to your knowledge of learning experiences. Thinking that playing real games against superior opposition was more than of a learning experience than winter indoor nets is obviously stupid .silly me.

I have often suggested my club team could beat a full Sussex team at 20/20 and that West Indies 20/20 is of a higher standard than given credit for.

Ps QPCC club team (Trinidad 20 /20 champs) includes Dwayne Smith, Dwayne Bravo , Darren Bravo,Runako Morton, Keiron Pollard and Sunil Narine...Lots of fire power.

Think I agree with bailed out and RF... Dont know why you all suddenly think this is a mickey mouse tournament but were happy with the PRo Arch tournament.

West Indies has just come out of the rainy season so this is our first cricket also other than nets and practice.

I am sure they will all learn from the experience. My disappointment is being knocked out so early and being so obviously outclassed in our group. I must have believed Sharkey who has often told me cricket in West Indies is very very poor and way below county standard.Perhaps some of the players believed him too.

One bright spot has been seeing Dwayne Smith murder Jamaica.Having been discarded by West Indies and Barbados some people are quite shocked but not us from QPCC or Sussex.I will still have Trinidad to support who now appear to be coming on very strong with some big scores.Pollard seems to manage ok on these wickets.

Surely players learn more in new conditions against superior opposition?.Playing with themselves in the nets will hardly be a learning experience. My disappointment is that I expected more but they have been badly outclassed by players you routinely scorn as not up to second division standard. I think there are many on the messageboard who question your judgments.

Well even though it was an out of season understrength team I had hoped we would not be decisively outplayed by the university team and that Machan,Wernars etc might look more the part. The batting was very uninspiring. In fact Sussex,Canada and Netherlands are just the whipping boys here. I think WICB will have to reconsider whether these invitations serve any useful purpose for West Indies cricket.
Looks now like an early return so I will only get to see Sussex play one game in Barbados

Practice or not trhe Sussex batting has so far been quite woeful with a number of players (Yardy,Wernars,Hodd,Machan) really looking quite unable to score at any reasonable rate. you would have hoped they could have performed a little better against the University team

Does Gatting need to use the premeditated reverse sweep? With three down I struggle to see where we will get the runs against the University spinners.
