Under current Kolpak and work permit rules yes,but remember they have a cost too in terms of the ECB subsidy and that is increasing each year I believe.Corey is always going to be a last minute decision for one year as it has always been. But he has said he would like to be back and Robbo has said he would like to have him (and Sidey and Amjad Khan and quite a few others the budget cant run to)

Corey can play next season under Kolpak rules.

but that wasnt the question was it? The answer is I dont know ,as it is for many of our out of contract players.

Hopefully we will know soon after the end of the season

Not yet they cant.Corey is on a one year contract only which is not renewed until late when Kolpak rules availability etc is known.

They say you dont change a winning team. However this season call ups and injuries have been very disruptive.

20 players have represented Sussex in the CC and only 4 more than 9 times in 14 games.Hopefully next seaon we can have a more settled team.

The spin off is that many more players have been given an opportunity. Some more successfully than others with no immediate replacement for RMJ or callups being obvious.

Will Beer is 21 and pretty inexperienced. His record in first class, list A and 20/20 are none too impressive but he has time.He has shown poise and llooked the part. His second eleven performances this year have shown real imrovement.

http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/297626.html

Maybe someone expected Beer to be in the first team and taking 44 wickets at 26 in 13 matches but I didnt. If Monty wasnt with us I expect Ollie would have played more than 5 games rather than Beer play any because perhaps Robbo doesnt think he is ready. Also we might have another season in the second division which few supporters think is a good thing. There is a balance between developing young talent, our succession planning ,and maximising current results. Not an easy task and I think Mark Robinsons team has been doing it pretty well.

Beer can only do what is asked...he performed well when given the opportunty. He also did well in the seconds and made considerable strides with his batting.

As far as I can see that is meeting expectations. The fact that he wasnt risked or given an opportunity in the county championship cant be held against him.I dont speak for the selectors so dont wish to be drawn into a debate about whether he is ready and whether the club is overly protective...all I can judge is on what he was asked to do and it seems to me he did that well.Ollie too didnt get to play every game but did make some progress with his batting and bowling. Anyon too has met my expectations in that he has taken his wickets at reasonable cost and fulfilled his role pretty well.
Cant really comment on Aga or Liddle because they played so little but I would have liked them to have achieved more.
I believe the most important achievement of Beer ,Brown,Adkin and Hatchett is that they looked the part...not out of their depth at all.

Perhaps England might release Wright for the last couple of CC games.

Sadly I feel his England days may be over (for a while).

Duck,dropped catch ,didnt bowl.

Yardy is now integral as a front line bowler/ all rounder. If Luke doesnt bowl is his batting good enough for England? Could they drop him for the 50 overs and send him home (before tuesday please)

Thanks Kim.Now I know you are just an anorak like the rest of us without those contacts in high places that Paperboy has ,forcing him to "hob nob"(iis that correct english?) when we have to watch cricket.Although he was craning his kneck to hear Robbo telling me his targets this winter.reckon bailed out must have heard too but we are all too discreet to name names till the business is done. But this season is fascinating with big names being "released" (Shah,Amjad Khan, Sidebottom, KP) and many others being rumoured to be unsettled. Its going to be a busy winter as agents market their clients.

Interesting debate. In the CC we got off to a flier with Rana and RMj in peak form and got 4 wins.In the next 10 we have 3 wins, so its down to earth.

I believe we have seen a lot of potential in Hatchett,Adkin and Brown who we all hope will have great futures.Beer and Rayner still have room for improvement but met all expectations.

Its in the batting we have been light.Thornley and Gatting have been disppointing(no I am not writing them off but their CC performances this season are way below what is expected of a front line batsman to hold a place),such that Hodd gets picked as a batsman in proposed teams above which have 3 keepers and look a batsman light. Hodd is a good keeper /batsman but not #6.For me its Hodd or Brown at 7 and we are a batsman/allrounder short.

Missing Yardy and wright really upsets the balance, but does give otherds a chance to stake a claim

So why would you take someone who cant get on with coaches? big_smile Maybe you should be in for KP. lol

Kim, You seem to have good knowledge of all these 28 day notices that clubs give before they talk to someone out of contract at seasons end.Is this from a private source or are they published somewhere? Sussex have made some approaches but will say nothing until a contract is signed because there is many a slip twixt cup and lip.

That's a jolly interesting article TC. We may yet see a Range Rover parked next to Matty's Jag. What odds will you give me for a KP/Sidebottom double in the the Sussex team picture next season? Two singles of 50-1 must make a 2500-1 double.
Will you take my pound?

It would be quite a coup wouldnt it? but I doubt Robbos budget will stretch and Scribe feels sure we have signed Amjad Khan for half the cost of Sidey. And you remember we will need a batsman that actually plays.

Also I am not betting with you because you are in the inner circle and have friends that understand betting  with names like Daz, Mouth,Slid etc. I will go with an honest Indian bookie. big_smile

No doubt the press can create lots of mischief...thats what they did to a bewildered Matt Prior. And I dont doubt KP would be Model professional and could really help Sussex. And I heard Grizz say he wouldnt want him and Robbo say the opposite.

Unfortunately as Robbo has said many times Sussex cant compete with the big contracts so you have to have other reasons to want to come to Hove and he has to believe hes getting a bargain.I feel sure we will sign a batsman this winter even if its not Shah Morgan or Malan.Since we are talking about replacing Murray to give you an idea how hard that is here are the career first class averages of the suspects mentionedand our skipper as a benchmark

KP       11,685@49.72
Muzz    20,284@48.29
Shah    14,379@41.92
Yards   7,606  @38.80
Malan   2688   @37.33
Morgan 2,930  @37.08

S&F  I didnt realise there was anyone who hadnt heard the whole Kit story and it never occured to me someone thought he threw his own kit off the balcony(that would be wierd)...suffice it to say it was just an anecdote as to his popularity in the dressing room and the point was the press didnt need to make it up.

Mind you none of that says he cant bat and wouldnt be a good signing...I think he would.

PN,

I would suggest KP is no-more clumsy or tactless than most other sportspeople.

The info about Pietersen's tantrum at Notts where several posters stated he threw his cricket equipment over the balcony in a prima donna frenzy troubled me, so I did some research today. As I thought it is complete tosh. The actual truth is this:

After Nottinghamshire were relegated in 2003, KP requested a release from his contract, stating he was unhappy at the club. This led to a public row with Gallian, then the captain of the club, during which Gallian "allegedly" threw Pietersen's kit off the Trent Bridge balcony and broke his bats.

Pietersen explained, "During the game I told the captain that I was not happy and that I wanted to leave. After the game we spoke in the dressing room and then I went to have dinner. I got a call saying the captain had trashed my equipment. I was told the captain had said, "if he does not want to play for Notts he can f*** off." I have not spoken to Gallian since, nor have I received an apology."

Gallian was renown for his mercurial temperament. A highly promising young cricketer he became an England reject after just 3 Tests. Some say he never recovered from this disappointment and became jealous of Pietersen's natural flair and ability. After leaving Notts in 2007, Gallian signed for Essex where he played just 5 games. The former captain now plays for Saffron Walden.

As for KP joining Hampshire, it was a combination of his friendship with Warne and Bransgrove wishing to rub shoulders with cricket celebrity. Once Warne left Hants, KP I suspect, lost interest in the club. Then he got injured. And the rest is history.

With the greatest respect Soft and Fluffy I have re-read this thread and only found one post about the kit off the balcony and that was mine, presumably you describe kindly as complete tosh.At no time did I say he threw the kit off the balcony in a prima donna frenzy ..I said it wasnt the press...ie not a press conspiracy.I am sorry you had to research because I was not explicit enough in saying the skipper did it...I thought this story was very well known as reported by the press (Accurately I think) ..that it was Jason Gallian that chucked it off the balcony and told him to go forth and multiply.
Perhaps a more important point was that even after Notts refused to release him ,he continued to play to the best of his ability. The key point is he was not known for dressing room harmony.

poor weather forecast for this game again, but with a 19 point lead we are certainly in the pole position.I guess going in to the Worcs game needing only three points to clinch the title would provide sufficient excitement for the messageboard?

We have to replace Yardy with Prior  and find an all rounder again to replace Wright. This may mean three Keepers

Joyce,Nash,Brown,Goodwin,Prior,Hodd (at six?) Arafat,Rayner,Anyon,Panesar ,Collymore.

This suggests the team is a bit lopsided.

The Netherlands were terrible but Scotland and Unicorns played well.No surprise with the lopsided groups its a team from the Netherlands group that will probably be the best second place finisher.Bringing more substandard teams in can hardly be a strategy to improve the standard.

It would be ok if you ran a straight knock out cupwith a first round excluding 8 seeded teams from Div 1 and let the other ten counties play with 6 additions (Universities,Minors,Scotland ,Clayton etc)

The qualifief will likely come from either Essex or gloucs....However that group had a very uncompetitive Netherlands with no first class cricketers. The other groups had Scotland and Unicorns who both proved competitive (until Unicorns lost a few players mid season but having done damage).
