There's a real buzz down here at the moment. After weeks of being told that ticket sales were appalling, the stadia seem full for just about every match. There is an arrogant view down here that southern hemipshere rugger is so much better than that in the north. In fact so much so that France deliberately set out to lose to the All Blacks to get the easier quarter- and semi-finals... Yeah right!. Off to Scotland- England this evening, and then Wales-Fiji tomorrow. And, unless I'm very unlucky, France-England next weekend. It would be good to see an All Blacks-England or -Wales final, but it may turn out to be France making the final... in which case the ABs will probably choke again:

CD lost the final to Auckland. I wasn't at the match, but did see it on TV.

Auckland made a lowly 158 with Michael Yardy bowling well: 3 overs 25 for 1.

It should have been an easy score to make, but CD made things hard: They were 0 for 3 off the first over - Peter Ingram and Ian Blackwell getting golden ducks. Michael Yardy (21 off 21) and Ross Taylor (44 off 42), who was probably run out midway through his innings but the TV umpire had doubt, steadied things. Eventually they needed 6 off the last ball to tie the match, which they didn't get (even though Kyle Mills bowled it overarm). Kruger van Wyk batted especially well.

It may surprise folks back in Blighty that the Ashes is typically the first item in the sports news on TVNZ, tonight even coming bafore the Blackcaps' win. It's not there is a propotionally large immigrant population from Britain, it is because the Kiwis want to see the Aussies beaten. The sense of scahdenfreude when the newsreader updated the score (58 wihout loss) at the end of the programme was very evident.
Apparently before the first world war most Kiwis would get behind Australia against the Motherland... something happened during that war to that put New Zealanders very much behind anyone who's playing Australia, and especially England when it's cricket.

TGD is the competition attracting good crowds?

I would estimate about 1000 to 1500 at last evening's match, but plenty of families and youngsters. For the match against Central Districts I would estimate about 500 - but then the school holidays hadn't started. Seddon Park holds about 11,000, so it can look empty. It only gets 11,000 for one day matches against Australia - even for last year's test against the Aussies there were only 1500 to 2000 on the first day. The smaller grounds in the remoter parts - Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth etc get even smaller crowds.

I have just returned from Seddon Park where the Yahoo Xtra Northern Knights lost to the Hell Wellington Firebids. In the briefest of conversations Luke said his leg is good, but it has not yet recovered sufficiently for him to bowl. It didn't seem to affect his running and fielding.

He (27) opened the innings with Jesse Ryder (86) and although both looked a little shakey at the start (Ryder's first boundary was a Chinese cut) they had a 100 partnership after 8 overs. And, of course, that included no scampered singles and only one two. Ryder had 50 after five! Luke appeared to struggle against the dibbley-dobblies of Pig (Scott Styris), until he smashed him for a six. Luke's dismissal was a little unfortunate: He drove a full toss to long off. If it had been elevated slightly more it would have cleared the fielder. The Firebirds then rather limped along to 202.

The Knights started their innings with aggression - two sixes. Wilson and Gibbs seemed to be leading them to victory. And whereas Ryder is a bully, relying on gettig his weight behind his shots, Gibbs played immaculately, until he was caught by Luke at short third man - a relatively difficult chance since he had to make a lot of ground. He had earlier dropped an easier chance, much to the mirth of the locals - they are very partisan here.
The Firebirds won quite comfortably:

There was a terrific run out (of Kane Williamson) by Ronald Karaitiana, who dived to push the ball from going over the boundary, got up and raced round to gather it and throw it straight to the wicketkeeper as Williamson was coming back for the third.

Breaking news: Shane Warne has not been recalled for the third test.

And when Ritchie Benaud was asked about the possibility of Warne being asked to play again, he replied that he was disappointed; why hadn't he been asked too?

Canterbury defeated Wellington:

Although his score suggests otherwise Luke Wright struggeld with the bat, as well as the ball. I didn't see the match, but was listening to the commentary. He was scratching around at first and was generally unable to time the ball. When he did start to hit it he was lucky not to be caught on the boundary by ten Doeschate. He was heading off, but the wind - a feature of Wellington - carried the ball over the boundary.

For those interested in following the Sussex players in the HRV 20 over competition Radio Sport  provide commentary via the internet on the matches:

Here's the schedule:

I imagine those starting at 2 pm would not be convenient, but some start at 5 and 6 pm (6 am and 7 am in the UK).

The club websites are similarly uninformative. I didn't know Yardy was playing for CD until I saw the squad list at the ground.  According to the CD website Graeme Napier is playing for them again. I've no idea for whom Nash is playing...

Yardy was interviewed after the match by Mark Richardson on Prime TV (terrestrial Sky channel). He was asked why he and Ian Blackwell were both signed by CD when they are similar cricketers; batsmen that bowl slow left arm. "We're cheap" was the reply... Richardson also pointed out that he once scored 200 against Sussex. His fellow presenters suggested the match lasted just one innings.

I saw Michael Yardy at Seddon park this evening in a twenty over match. He helped Central Stags overcome the hosts by a considerable margin. He scored a careful 30 odd, before being run out at the non-striker's end when Brad Hodge deflected Noema-Barnett's drive onto the stumps. He bowled four overs that were economical, and took one wicket, but was bashed for a six in his final over. He took a simple catch at deep mid on, and almost hung onto a very sharp chance at backward point after diving Collingwood-esque.

He was also generous enough to sign autographs for a few youngsters when wickets fell and answered their enthusiastic questions about where he lives, whether he'd ever played for England etc. Interestingly when asked if he preferred living in England or New Zealand he replied... England.

Luke Wright has been on national TV here; he'll be coming to Seddon Park later this month.

Last major country we have beaten in the knock out stage was Germany in 1966.

Why cannot everyone accept we are crap and getting to the quarters is our limit .

And why cant we find an English coach ??

Because the hugely succesfull English coaches - Im thinking Hoddle. Keegan and McClaren - are no longer available?  We do the same in cricket and football now - want an English coach. Until we get one, then we hanker for a foreign one again.

Think Bumble - Fletcher - Moores - Flower OR Keegan - Eriksson- McClaren - Capello.

Another reason might be this incredibly tedious stat of which I nevertheless remain proud:

There are 2,769 coaches in this country with UEFA's top qualification. Compare and contrast with Germany (34,970), Spain (23, 995), Italy (29,420) or France (17,588).

Good one, eh?  cool

There's a lot of good money going on Harry Redknapp getting the job.

Kill me now.

The first time I saw Mike Bassett England Manager I thought it was a highly amusing comedy...  I realise now that it was a hard-hitting documentary about the state of English football.

This man might be tempted by a challenge and some big money (anything over NZ$25,000):

The present bunch of spoilt prima donas just can't compare; I'm not convinced that all of them are 100% Homo sapien. And likewise, no Dutch team could compare to the outstanding talent of the 1974 team. I never tire of watching the the first minute and a bit of the 1974 World Cup final:

(What did Scotland achieve in the 1974 World Cup finals that no other team did?)

Of course I want England to do well, and hope they progress to the quarter or semi-finals .. where, true to form, they will lose in a penalty shoot-out.

We got knocked out without losing a game. Drew with Yugoslavia and Brazil but only beat Zaire 2-0 while Brazil put six past them and Yugoslavia nine. Yugoslavia and Brazil also drew so Yugoslavia topped the group on goal difference and Brazil second.

sad  sad  sad  sad  sad  sad  sad  sad

Not only that SS; Scotland were the only unbeaten team. West Germany lost to East Germany in the group stages... And if Germany win the World Cup New Zealand will emulate that achievement.

Absolutely, 2nd in the County Championship, top in the 20-20 and 3rd in the Pro-40 divisions. And some folks are demanding new openers, new middle-order batsmen, new fast bowlers, new spinners, the sacking of just about everyone at the club because they should never have been signed in the first place. It really is hard to understand the mentality of those detractors. It's almost as if they think that they know more about cricket and how to run the squad than Mr Robinson... Well I prefer to trust him, afterall Sussex haven't done too badly in recent seasons.

Yes Jr - Go the All Whites! Dominated the ockers, who resorted to some unsavoury tactics, and overcame Serbia, who are rated 15th at present. At 3000-1 it's almost worth a flutter.

... But wouldn't it be great to have a North Korea-South Korea final?
