Kim a top seven of Maddy, Westwood, Bell, Trott, Troughton, Clarke and Ambrose is awesome and should score enough runs to keep you in this division. Odd then that a top class overseas  strike bowler wasn't signed to give you that cutting edge that you will need to challenge for honours.
A good OS paceman plus rotate any 2 of the youngsters with the spinner Botha backed up by a few spells from at least 4 of the top six who can all be relied on to bowl a tidy spell, and you would have an attack comparable to most, ours included.

That's what we were looking for but with the new O/S rules, the IPL and SAs reluctance to let players go we couldnt find one. We considered Chris Martin again but he wouldnt have been the answer. The thinking was that Westwood, as a new captain, would need a go to bowler.  The loss of Sals forced us to go the spinner route instead because we want to play two ar least in one days.

The top order does look good. But put Sangakarra in for Bell and its the relegation top order. Shouldnt forget that Frost topped the 2008 FC averages either. Batting is very weak in reserve though.

Kim

Teletex quotes Giles . They were going to get Martin again but Salisbury retiring means they are having a rethink and will start the season wothout an OS player.

They may not be the only team without an OS at the start. Durham, Northants and Essex have not got anyone , we will likely be without Yasir,
Hants do have North but he is in Australia's 1 dsay squad and will probably
not come to Hants and finally I saw yesterday a quote from Worcs that Noffke has an injury and Australia may not let him come.

Re: Other counties

I see Andre Nel has retired from international cricket and signed for Surrey, very interesting....

Re: Other counties

He has signed a three year deal. Is that as a Kolpak?

Re: Other counties

I must say I woudn't have minded us landing Nel.

What I don't understand is how come he has signed a 3 year deal as a Kolpack. I thought Koplacks were histiry from next year?

Or is it the case that he has played international cricket so he can play next year whereas Goodwin who hasn't,but is loyal to his county and helps English youngsters, may not be able to play next year. Pathetic!

Re: Other counties

Not sure if that ruling will stand up if challenged so maybe we should get Murray, Smith and Collymore on three year contracts.

Re: Other counties

I am very pleased to see Slurrey have signed Andre Nel - at least it will minimise the risk of me lapsing in to liking them.

Re: Other counties

They may bring in new rules for Kolpaks but surely if you have signed a contract under the old rules it will be hard to ban such players.ie Muzza and Smith have contracts to 2010 and I would expect them to be allowed to play next year. Some SA , including Nel have contracts to 2011 so they too should be allowed to see them out. Big problem is it is Europe and the Government who are changing the rules .

Re: Other counties

Amazing that Nel should join Grizz at Slurrey.

I recall the two nearly had a punch up in a limited overs game at Hove, many years ago, when Nel played for Northants.

When Grizz scored his 100, he celebrated "in his face".

I should think a million rand for a seasons work will probably help Andre to get over any past upsets between him and Grizz.

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.

Re: Other counties

Ashley Giles hasnt made the short list for the England job. That helps us as well

Re: Other counties

I see Warks are going for Jetan Patel of NZ

Re: Other counties

Surrey are playing Bradfor Uniy , although not first class, and I note Tim Linley is playing and also a Rick Anderson , who has played for Essex and one or 2 other counties. Anyway they are both in late 20's and are average 2nd team players. Would have though with the southern half of
London and all of the county of Surrey to chose from they could find some young bowlers.

Re: Other counties

Yes I noticed that.

I think Surrey have put out a virtual 2nd XI on the basis that Bradford/Leeds isn't a first class fixture (these universities were never first class). I am still waiting to find out if our match againsg Cambridge UCCE us 1st class next week (it would have been last season).

Re: Other counties

Camb Oxford Durham and Loughborough are all 1st class. Just Bradford and Cardiff are not .

Re: Other counties

I notice looking at the Cambridge side that opening for them is 24 year old left hander Chris Grammer who plays club cricket for Brighton and Hove and who has appeared in the past for Sussex 2XI.

Looking at the Surrey team with the exception of Newman and Brown it is a virtual 2XI with former Sussex seamer Tim Linley, former Essex seamer Ricky Anderson, plus youngsters like promising young batsman Jason Roy, Chris Thompson and Rory Burns.

Re: Other counties

Thanks for clarifying that Sharkey.

It therefore makes it a more attractive fixture for the Sussex players to get some "cheap" runs and wickets at the beginning of the season.

I wounder what the line up will be?

It's the last pre-season friendly before the season proper starts so I would expect Sussex to name their strongest available XI.

Probable starting XI: Yardy (c), Nash, Joyce, Goodwin, Prior (+), Hopkinson, Wright, Martin-Jenkins, Rayner, Aga, Kirtley

Re: Other counties

Well the ECB will be happy. Stuart Clark is replacing Geeves in the Aussie squad in SA and Dubai and is unlikely to play for Kent.

Re: Other counties

my money is on an Aussie for our signing - but cant quite suss out who is neither not in the IPL nor playing for Australia

Re: Other counties

A couple of county reviews today show Crowie's Northants as have Van der Wath as OS player but Capel , the coach has confirmed they will not have an OS player this season as they have 4 Kolpaks, Hall Boje VdWath and Wessels.

It is items like this that make the rules re Kopaks a complete and utter joke.

Durham will not have an OS until the 2020 but Benkenstien Di Venuto are playing and they have Thorp Clayton Breese Wiseman all now just British as they have spent 4 summers here.

Re: Other counties

The only other county without an OS is now Kent, thats the team with Van Jaarsveld, MacLaren Kemp and Azar .

Mind you of the 10 counties in CC action tomorrow only Franklin  at Glos and Langer at Somerset are in the country and playing. Several are awaiting work permits and Visas .

We are hardly in a position to complain about other counties fielding Kolpak players or players on EU passports!
