Re: Other counties

If it is just til the end of the season at the ECB's request for practice, then I think it reasonable that we don't hold him to those words. I'm sure Moores would find it reasonable.

The only other option would be Middlesex, and they only have one CC game left.

A Littlehampton connection.

Re: Other counties

Three keepers now at Glamorgan (Bragg, Cooke and Wallace).

As for Leicestershire, James Bennning has been released and Andrew (AJ) Harris has retired.

Re: Other counties

A bit surprised at Benning only lasting 1 year at Leics, even if competition is stiff for the all rounder role. A pretty useful player and it is hard to see how it has all gone so wrong for him.

Perhaps he got a little wrapped up in the hype about him being this big hitting batsman when he first came onto the scene. An FC batting SR of practically 80 suggests this as a possibility but even with that he still averages on the healthy side of 30. If he tempered his style a bit to around an SR of 60/65, I'd have thought he could easily be a regular 40+ average man.

Probably not one for us, unless we saw him as cover for Yardy and Wright, but I wouldn't be screaming dissent if we were interested.

Re: Other counties

Have there been any rumours about Malan and Sussex? Is he out of contarct?

Re: Other counties

I could see Benning as cover for Luke  and maybe as a replacement for Chad Keegan?

We do need an all-rounder.

The really good news is that Ollie is now a bowling all-rounder, like most of us have said he would become for the past few seasons.

life member - you're stuck with me!

Re: Other counties

Benning, are you having a laugh roll

Who is that man talking to Schlidd ?

Re: Other counties

No thanks a very ordinary player who has now been released 2 seasons in a row.

With Leics chairman Davidson keeping his position that must make Hoggard's place at Leics untenable . I wonder if he will leave.

Re: Other counties

Quite agree about Benning. Wasn't he unloaded by Grizz because he was one of the awkward squad.

I was thinking about Ollie earlier on and had a look at his stats. My gut feeling was that he hadn't kicked on, but I see that he has 18 FC wickets @21.11 this season and has scored 240 runs @34.28 with 2 fifties. So he's done quite well with limited opportunites.

I commented on the Hoggard situation when this story first broke. I wonder if we'd still be interested?

Re: Other counties

Benning? If he isn't good enough for Leicestershire he isn't good enough for Sussex.

As for Malan, he is probably only using the interest to get a better contract out of Middlesex.

Re: Other counties

Having, in the past, travelled to matches specifically to watch Benning play and often been rewarded by exciting big hitting, I think you are wrong about him. He is a hugely talented if misdirected cricketer and one that neatly fits the Sussex "shopping in the broken shop" bill. I'm not saying he would walk straight into the team necessarily but he has massive potential and it is a great shame that he has been so badly managed in the past. He'd be a great signing as far as I'm concerned. Please dont forget we do not have limitless pots of money to sign all the best players.

PS Its nice to agree with MBTS!

Re: Other counties

Surrey have FOUR players out of contract this season and one of these has already been released.

2010: Afzaal, Dernbach, Evans and Linley.
2011: Brown, Harinath, Jordan, King, Meaker, Nel, Ramprakash, Schofield, Spriegel, Walters and Wilson
2012: Batty (what idiot offered him three years?), Davies, Hamilton-Brown and Tremlett.

Afzaal and Linley will surely be released. This will leave Surrey with just 16 players and if Roy and Lancefield are offered contracts it will leave Surrey with four players to sign.

Why so many out of contract players next year?

Re: Other counties

One of the reasons Evans, who is now with us,  was let go - despite 5 second team 100s I think this year, was a personality clash with the Surrey coaches.

big_smile

So why would you take someone who cant get on with coaches? big_smile Maybe you should be in for KP. lol

Kim, You seem to have good knowledge of all these 28 day notices that clubs give before they talk to someone out of contract at seasons end.Is this from a private source or are they published somewhere? Sussex have made some approaches but will say nothing until a contract is signed because there is many a slip twixt cup and lip.

Re: Other counties

Just waste a huge amount of time reading papers/internet TC. No private sources. Was once with George D when somone phoned him to tell him, in a loud voice, 5 names Warwicks were after - nearly did myself an injury pretending not to listen while listening furiously. By the time I got home ready to use the inside knowledge, George had published the details in the Post  mad .

Re: Other counties

Thanks Kim.Now I know you are just an anorak like the rest of us without those contacts in high places that Paperboy has ,forcing him to "hob nob"(iis that correct english?) when we have to watch cricket.Although he was craning his kneck to hear Robbo telling me his targets this winter.reckon bailed out must have heard too but we are all too discreet to name names till the business is done. But this season is fascinating with big names being "released" (Shah,Amjad Khan, Sidebottom, KP) and many others being rumoured to be unsettled. Its going to be a busy winter as agents market their clients.

Re: Other counties

Surrey have made a formal 28 day approach to sign Mark Turner of Somerset.

He has also been offered a renewal at Somerset.

Suprised really, you can't mention his name at Taunton without complaints from the Somerset members, a few have even said he's the worst player in county cricket. And from what I've seen of him they wouldn't be far wrong. I thought Surrey would be aiming a lot higher anyway.

Re: Other counties

Yes when i was at at Taunton for our 20/20 match the locals were scathing of him,and stated they wanted him dropped.
Like Cullum states surely Surrey would have higher goals than him.

Re: Other counties

I am hopeful Ollie Rayner will eventually fill the role of big hitting all rounder. Benning doesn't appeal to me, though I can remember him being touted as something special earlier in his career. If we have a limited budget, I'd like to see it used on players who will make a real difference.

Re: Other counties

Benning got a big one day hundred at Gloucester in front of the Sky cameras. Colville, as is his wont, used this as conclusive evidence that Benning should be on the fringes of the England one day side and didnt shut up about it for years.  James Vince, of Hampshire, is the new Michael Vaughan to Colville for the same reason - a single MPV like shot for 4 in a televised game V us.

I think Colville is a loony.

Looks like Dimi is next into the Twitter hall of shame.

Do people really believe that their slightest thoughts are so interesting or important that they are duty bound to publish them in the public domain?

Have now found what he twit

"Geoff miller is a complete k**b. He had no clue what he is doing. Fing p***k," he posted.

"Chairman of selectors came to Liverpool and didn't even come and say hi... what a p***k. Doesn't take much to say hello, does it."

OK. So perhaps GM should have said Hi. On the other hand, perhaps with Dimi not playing, GM didn't realise he was there.

I would also assume that Dimi didn't go up to him and say Hi either, so clearly it took too much to do it himself. Does that make him a 'p***k' too?

As for having no clue what he is doing, current results tend to suggest otherwise.

Michael Vaughan's advice this morning via twitter in relation to the above;

Btw..note to all county players..if you don't want to play for England tweet something about the chairmen of selectors. Not the best move dim.
