Whats happening to Geraint Jones then?

Re: Andy Hodd

Sorry, no idea.

Re: Andy Hodd

Sorry to hear of Hoddy's impending move but a lot of counties would be lucky to have him as number 1 keeper.

Re: Andy Hodd

i suppose Jones might be considering becoming a batsman only - alternatively he could be moving as well - recent rumours do suggest, however, that Hodd is unlikely to be a Sussex player next year - a shame as hes a player I really like - but having so many wicketkeepers was never sustainable unless one was prepared to give up the gloves and become a batsman only, or both were happy with a job-share type arrangement

Re: Andy Hodd

This is one rumour that appears to be true then.

Re: Andy Hodd

Reading the Kent site Jones appears to be staying and Hodd certainly wont be going there.
They haven't any money for new players .

Re: Andy Hodd

I suggest Hoddy considers what's happened to Ambrose before he jumps again.

Re: Andy Hodd

I have it on good authority their 23 year old reserve keeper Paul Dixey is being released and replaced by 19 year old Sam Billings who is rated as a better option with Jones likely to have three more years in the game Dixey would be 27 before getting his chance.

Brown is likely to be first choice keeper at Sussex next season so I'm not surprised Hodd is looking but doubit it is Kent as they can't afford to sign anyone.

Who will be Kent's second spinner next season? Rob Ferley has been released. 18 year old off-spinner Adam Riley is Kent top 2XI wicket taker with 20 and maybe offered a contract.

Batting wise Van Jaarsveld and Stevens maybe going to Surrey. Can Kent afford to replace either given their money troubles? If not there is very good chance 18 year old Chris Piesley who is top 2XI run scorer for Kent with 785 and 17 year old batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond who has represented England Under 19 could be offered contracts as Key, Denly, Northeast, Blake and Goodman would be the only batsmen!

With Khan departure it must increase the odds of Ntini being re-signed as overseas player (if money allows) as their seam attack is woefully short in terms of quality and experience.

If Stevens, van Jaarsveld and Khan leave and aren't replaced Bell-Drummond, Billings, Piesley and Riley maybe offered contracts. Kent may start next season with a squad of 19.

Re: Andy Hodd

Rumours about Hoddy's possible move total tosh.  I am pretty sure other counties will be interested in signing a player of his quality - but I am sure he will be staying.  Why would he be negotiating to buy a property in Hove  (so I am told) if he was intending to move to Derby, Kent, Hants .....  A Sussex lad who fully intends to see out his career with us.

Re: Andy Hodd

I really can't see him going to another county as looking through the other squads I can't see anywhere were he'd be guarenteed as first choice gloveman.

Why would he move from us just to be in exactly the same position in another team?

Re: Andy Hodd

Well having been to a cracking day's play today at Hove, I have it on very good authority that Hoddy is staying

Mushtaq Ahmed - 476 glorious championship wickets

ps

putting 2+2 together and making 100, sutton, managed by a certain mr peter moores, have just released their keeper, sutton  ?!?!?

another (very odd) rumour has tim coming back to sussex?  why would he (tim) want to come back as mattie's understudy again.

Why would we want Tim back? a batsman yes,but not another keeper even if one leaves and we must rely on a youngster in emergency

Re: Andy Hodd

Ambrose wouldn't be just Prior's understudy if he came back.  I wouldn't grumble if we brought the guy back as a batsman only and gave him a chance when we were light.  He has been poor for some time now but we have a good record in re-juvenation projects - he could be worth a punt, as a former shark too.

Regarding Hodd, I think it depends on how much better a keeper he is than Brown.  Was Hodd better at 21 than brown at 21 too - will Brown improve greatly?

Basically there's a case to play both with Hodd at seven, if he's much better behind the stumps than Brown.  If there's not much in it, Hodd's place may be better filled by an all-rounder - and Adkin needs to be that guy, for me.

querying the logic of the rumour not your veracity Mike.Certainly Robbo is taking a good look at Hoddy and Brown in case he has to choose.

Re: Andy Hodd

About 5 years ago, Hoddy's future at Sussex seemed non existent with Prior and Ambrose both playing 1st team cricket and neither of them having much prospect of playing for England with Geraint Jones looking assured and Foster and Read waiting in the wings. At the time Ambrose just shaded Prior as the better keeper but the lesser batsman.

How things have changed. Both men have played for England and Hoddy has had a long run with Sx. Having moved counties once he's better off staying with his county of origin unless his hand is forced.

Hard to say as Hodd was at Surrey not getting a chance!

Correct - how time flies. I meant after his England U'19 days and before he moved to Surrey in 2004.

Incidentally when Hoddy was playing for Sx in the younger age groups he was there as much for his batting as wicketkeeping. There was a lad at Eastbourne in the Sx squad, same age, who was every bit as good, possibly better wk, but rarely got a lookin because his batting was so much more inferior.

Reason for the rumour is that one factor in the Ambrose situation is his desire to live down south again.

Re: Andy Hodd

Ambrose would be a good signing for Middlesex if he's looking to play for a club further south.  Good player but lacking in confidence and not for Sussex - would rather hang on to the 2 who are doing well (hopefully they can both be kept happy).  Ambrose made his decision a few years ago (he wasn't forced out at all and there was always the chance even then that Matt would play for England) and Robbo then brought Hodd back which was an excellent move.  Now we've also got a highly promising young player in Brown and the last thing we need is another keeper.
