Re: Andy Hodd

By South he means the South coast. But it is very unlikely to happen; there are no realistic options. It would be a terrible shame but I wouldnt be amazed if this was it with Tim in English cricket. Total waste. We should have released him at the end of last year.

Re: Andy Hodd

interesting to see what you were saying about Tim Ambrose a couple of months ago, Kim - but main reason for resurrecting this is that we dont seem to have heard anything on Andrew Hodd's contract renewal - should we be worried?

Re: Andy Hodd

-Hoddy wasnt released therefore he has been made an offer
-He hasnt signed it therefore he is considering his options
-Options could mean issues in this contract offer or alternative offers.
-He is a good wicketkeeper batsman but no longer an automatic starter and has                 to  consider   Prior losing his one day place and Browns continued progress.
-And if Sussex did sign another batsman it would reduce the chances of playing two keepers

A lot for Hoddy to ponderand I am sure we all hope he stays but will respect his decision whatever it is.

Does Kim know the answer?

Re: Andy Hodd

I dont even know the question. But, dont the contacts only end on 30 September, so there can be a few weeks before they all sign them? As for Tim, he had no options and hes made a bit of a mess of things I suppose but Im 100% delighted.

Re: Andy Hodd

TC you sum it up well.
Hodd is the better wicketkeeper but with 2 other keepers on our books, both better batsmen I do wonder how Sussex can play all 3 given that Matt is not playing 1day Ints and thus available for possibly half a season .

Re: Andy Hodd

SPSL - Hodd would be the keeper if all three played.

Not if Prior wanted to keep

Re: Andy Hodd

If Prior wants to keep and is available, how can Brown or Hodd  be preferred to him?
He's England's wicketkeeper at the Ashes and has fought hard over several years to cement his place in the England Test team - how can anyone possibly suggest that he wouldn't be the Sussex No 1 choice?
If he's happy to play as a batsman, as he did quite often this year, then the others can have their opportunity.    But they will doubtless be competing for the gloves during at least a third of the season when Matt is with England.

Re: Andy Hodd

That's the point really Mendis.  Prior, or England, are the ones who suggest it and it happens quite a lot.  It's feesible that all three play, with Prior just batting, Brown just batting, and Hodd being the best wickie, probably, and being a decent number 7 playing too.

Of course if Prior wants to keep he will, which could leave Hodd in the cold for a bit, although that's still gonna depend on how Brown bats.

Re: Andy Hodd

Where else would he go? Hampshire? I can not think of anywhere else that needs a keeper.

"United We Believe, Together We Achieve"

Re: Andy Hodd

Lancs maybe.  Sutton left and you'd say Hodd is a better player than Gareth Cross.  It's the kind of county that you get noticed at plus there is the Moores factor.  That said, he is a vital member of our squad and it would be sad to see him go.  Sign him up!

Re: Andy Hodd

I wouldn't be surprised if Hoddy moved on, I have no info other than a feeling.

Matty looks like he's gonna be tests only for the foreseeable future, Browny has age on his side and really put his hand up last year when he got his chance to bat, and despite some reports on here is a very good keeper (but can improve a lot still).

Which leaves me to wonder what will happen with Hoddy...

my thoughts also Big D

Re: Andy Hodd

Lancs and the Moores connection could happen. I hope he stays- if we lose him we will definetly need another btasman with some experience.

Re: Andy Hodd

Well anything is possible with us, but Moores has stated that Cross will be given the gloves next year, so I can't imagine that Hodd will want to come here and be second choice, at least to start with.

Also we are not particularly flush with cash to be signing lots of players - we are either getting MVJ or an overseas batsmen, not both.  Also it was widely thought that MVJ was a done deal but there has been no mention of it as yet, so possibly his huge wages are a stumbling block.

Re: Andy Hodd

yep - i was aware the lanky supporters werent even happy that Sutton was taking the place of Cross - so he'll have to be given the opportunity. Apart from the clubs languishing at the bottom of Div 2 (i didnt mean Surrey), its hard to see where he can go. Hampshire is possibility but a perfectly decent youngster seemed to be doing a good job in Pothas's absence (cant remember his name)

Re: Andy Hodd

A top player and a top bloke.
With Matt expected to be with England for seven test matches next summer I see the gloves as being Hoddy's to lose.
I hope he will keep wicket whenever possible for Sussex as he is great to watch both as a keeper and as a graceful batsman.

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.

Re: Andy Hodd

Moores has stated that Cross will be given the gloves next year. 20 year old Andrea Agathagelou a South African born wicketkeeper-batsman with a Cypriot passport will be number 2. Agathagelou scored 1,284 runs @  36 for 2XI in 2010 with 1 100 and 11 50s, 32 dismissals as keeper and 29 wickets @ 15 with his leg breaks  with a best of 6-20. 24 year old South African born opener Warren Goodwin scored 904 runs @ 43 with 2 100 and 7 50s.

Andrea Agathagelou offered a two year contract with Lancashire:

Warren Goodwin is wanted by Warwickshire and Worcestershire but likely to sign for Lancs:

Hampshire won't go for Hodd as they now have three keepers (Pothas, Bates and Rouse) on the staff the last two of which have played for England Under 19.

Re: Andy Hodd

Man, you gotta be a good player to keep to your own leg breaks - get him in Lancs!

Re: Andy Hodd

was hodd ever capped?

life member - you're stuck with me!

Re: Andy Hodd

As the originator of this thread, I am obviously a big Andrew Hodd fan and very much hope that he is part of the next Sussex Championship winning team. Hoddy is Sussex through and through and to see him behind the sticks whilst Nashy and co are plastering some beleaguered attack all round Hove would take away a bit of the fun.

Re: Andy Hodd

I really hope he signs too. A fabulous batting season is just round the corner, surely, and I was particularly impressed with his one day form last season. I think he would be a shoe-in for the short form next season if he can repeat some of those inventive, effective innings down the order.

Re: Andy Hodd

is he capped? anyone know?  aew?

Re: Andy Hodd

Do we know if Brown wants to develop as a wicket keeper? It seemed to me that he was being developed as a top class number 3 batsman ( who can keep wicketand well if an emergency arises - just the sort of player England might need in future.) If Brown automatically fills the Sussex number 3 slot in future as a batsman, then that leaves the position open for much of the time for Hodd to be the wicket keeper batting at 7. Prior I assume will be England's regular  wickie except in one day matches when he can open for Sussex with his mate Mc Cullum.

The World is flat but Mushy sparkles

Re: Andy Hodd

I dont think he is capped, Mike - anyway I thought Hodd showed some real improvement with the bat, particularly in one-day cricket, where he displayed a much fuller range of shots. He remains a very good keeper, so no problem there.
So I really hope he stays, and gets plenty of cricket next year
