Topic: Monty Panesar

Nearly choked on my BR sandwich after reading this on the BBC

Sussex

Possible departures: Spinner Tom Smith ......... blah blah ......... The county are keen on Monty Panesar, if he is released by Northants.

WHAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   yikes

Re: Monty Panesar

The power and influence of a messageboard comment. This was some tosh started on the northamptonshire messageboard - seems someone at BBC has got hold of it as "gossip".

Can not be true... right?

"United We Believe, Together We Achieve"

Re: Monty Panesar

Why not, I said this weeks ago. 50 wickets a season at least, better then anything else we have, then the need to get Chawla in diminishes.

Re: Monty Panesar

When is Panesar going to start taking 50 wickets a season ?

His CC figures for this season with Northants in the 2nd division

412.1-89-1070-18 @ 59.44 BB 3-55

and that's an improvement on 2008  ......

He's 27 years old with 39 Test matches behind him and needs to start all over again in the 2nd XI if he wants to take wickets, no thank you sir  roll

Re: Monty Panesar

The other issue with Monty is your one day success. He's a liability in that form of the game - his fielding against Warwicks over the last two years has been schoolboyish.

If he wasnt so unpleasant over autographs, Id feel a bit sorry for him and the way his career has reversed.

£75,000 salary is hard to swallow as well.

Re: Monty Panesar

trouble is, Silas is that he got about 12 wickets in the second division last year, which is far less than oliie in the first division. he is also a lousy fielder and batsman and I imagine his wage demands will be quite high, as he would have been earning big under his central contract. So not keen for all those reasons, although of course he might improve dramatically under us but seems an expensive risk to me

Re: Monty Panesar

AND we would then have to go through a nightmare year on the messageboard of Ollie, Will, Pushy or Monty battles, please no ......  sad

Re: Monty Panesar

I take it this ajoke? The guy cannot bat cannot field is no use at 1day level and cannot take wickets in Div 2. And wont play Tests again.

Sweaty , you said I was having a go at our 3 reserve bowlers earlier well this is what I would call really  slagging someone off, politely of course.

PS I do have a grin on my face as it is not in the same league as Slid slagging players off.

To quote the great Slid Monty aint worth a dollar.

Re: Monty Panesar

PS for Crowie .

well he did bat at Cardiff but that did not count as they were only Aussie bowlers.

Re: Monty Panesar

So that's no then!

Re: Monty Panesar

Northants fans arent exactly scared of him leaving:

Yes Mushy has coached him already for England.  Yashir could then be retained as an overseas quickie next year.
Hasn't Monty taken six 5 fers for England. maybe not as daft as it seems this rumour as The Daily Telegraph broke the story of his possible departure three weeks ago.

BBC says.....................

Sussex

Overseas player 2009: Yasir Arafat (Pakistan); Damien Wright (Australia); Piyush Chawla (India)

Overseas player 2010: TBC

Ins: None

Outs: Carl Hopkinson (joined coaching staff), Jason Lewry (RET)

Possible departures: Spinner Tom Smith is reported to be set to join Middlesex on a three-year deal following a loan spell in 2009, but neither county has confirmed the move. The county are keen on Monty Panesar, if he is released by Northants.

Re: Monty Panesar

And with all the wickets Yasir and Panesar took last season we would romp the 2nd Division

Believe me I do see that logic - just think its pie in the sky

Re: Monty Panesar

"The lunatics have taken over tha Asylem" ala  Fun Boy three.

Sign Monty lol  lol  lol  lol I'd rather get a season ticket at the Toilet Bowl roll

Who is that man talking to Schlidd ?

Re: Monty Panesar

Pie in the Sky, Sweaty...................We'd have egg on our face for sure.#

I wouldn't have Monty Panesar in our quiz team big_smile

Who is that man talking to Schlidd ?

Re: Monty Panesar

Why would we possibly want Panesar? How is Panesar going to get 50 wickets next season? He took only 18 wickets @ 59 this year! His confidence as a bowler is shot. He is a poor fielder and a poor batsman who would do nothing to improve the squad! His salary demand of £100,000 makes it a complete non-starter. Surely this is some kind of sick joke?

Re: Monty Panesar

I like this story.

The Chawla debate has genererated thousands of posts and the pro-brigade's main point is that OK, he slows the development of others and doesn't fill our biggest hole BUT he takes loads of wickets and can bat a bit.

Here, we have a player that slows the development of others, doesn't fill our biggest hole, doesn't take any wickets, can't bat, can't field and doesn't sign autographs. Sounds perfect!

Monty really doesn't have much going for him!

Re: Monty Panesar

And forgot another one: costs a fortune!

Re: Monty Panesar

Boje is 37 and with Swann, Brown and White already having left I'm surprised Northants aren't putting more of an effort to try and keep him especially as they have also released leg spinner Dan Bendon and only have promising slow left armer Tom Brett in reserve.

If he does leave Northants surely Warwickshire or Surrey is a better fit for Monty than Sussex.

He has taken 50 wickets 3 of the last five seasons and as has been pointed out six Michelles in test matches. So he has one bad season and he's being written off at 27, If thats our criteria for a spinner why are we wasting our time with Ollie!!!! (Irony if you not sure)

Re: Monty Panesar

But crucially not in the last two years!

Re: Monty Panesar

you havbe to remember that some of our team cannot go on forever and i think monty would be ideal as the long-term replacement for ---- brian the gateman.

life member - you're stuck with me!

Re: Monty Panesar

Silas - I think that if he were to return to that kind of form, England would sit up and take notice. On form, he's a wicket-taker - more so than Swann, so we'd probably lose him to England pretty quickly if that happened.

Kim's point about one day cricket is also very relevant. That alone makes it a no-brainer.
