Re: Monty Panesar

Graham Swann's recent performances (second only to Mitchell Johnson for Test Wickets in this calendar year I believe) are going to make Monty Pansear less and less likely to be on the England selectors radar.

Swann will have to have a huge dip in form plus Monty a stupendous year in terms of wickets (and the selectors will note they are taken in Division Two of course, although thats where he got them when playing for Northants I suppose)

Re: Monty Panesar

Monty will blossom this year for us.

Even if he does he is going to find it hard to get back in with England, but from a Sussex point of view that is all to the good!

Re: Monty Panesar

Swann is undroppable for a while, but I still harbour some hopes of a two spin attack with England. That;s with a five-ma attack, and Prior cemented at 6, of course.

Re: Monty Panesar

jakarta,

"Swann will have to have a huge dip in form plus Monty a stupendous year in terms of wickets..."

But that is good for Sussex, surely? We don't want Monty disappearing half way through the season along with Luke Wright. I can't see Monty getting back into the England team unless Swann gains a long term injury and Rashid is out of favour with the selectors. And as for two spinners in the Test team, I can't see it, unless in exceptional circumstances; although, Rashid will get the nod, anyway.

Next summer, England at home face Bangladesh, then Pakistan, with 5 ODIs against Australia in-between. I can see Monty safely ensconced at Hove for his 3 year contract which is precisely what Sussex want. Hopefully, a much improved spinner, taking 50+ wickets in a season, but in the eyes of the England selectors, a player who had his chance but never made the long-term grade. Durham have Harmison; we'll have Monty.

That's the dream, anyway!  smile

I think that was what I was saying in my previous posts!  wink

The next winter tour is to Australia for the Ashes. England will need to take a second spinner and whilst Swann is nailed on for the tour the second spot is open.
Monty took a lot of wickets for England last time and a good summer at Sussex would put him back into the frame. A good start and he might even be looked at in the England/Bangladesh series next May. Our Monty has everything to play for.

Re: Monty Panesar

I am sure now he is in the sussex family he will florish, hopefully for sussex then after next summer for england starring in the ashes down under.

Re: Monty Panesar

Coral's have got some new years specials on their website.

One of which is Monty to be leading wicket taker in CC DIV2 @ 16's...

Big D,

A tempting bet. But then I took 16s on Brighton being promoted this season after Poyet's first game at Southampton.  wink

Re: Monty Panesar

Blimey SnF, that was a hopeful bet.

Don't worry, I got suckered in last year by Xian44 who saw the first game away at Crewe and told me confidently that the Albion were great value at 20's.

And we all know what happened there!

Re: Monty Panesar

Big D,

At that stage, Brighton were only 10 points away from the play-offs. The middle order are so tightly packed in League 1 (just 6 points between 20th and 10th), the 'Gus Bus' only need a good run of wins in the New Year and who knows. As Poyet says, he must teach the team a winning mentality.

As for the Panesar bet, I just can't see it. But then that's what they said about Mushtaq at the start of his first season in 2003.

Dream on! tongue

RHB: "I've been invited to join Surrey. Adams wants me to play for them very badly."
Jim May: "Well, in that case, you're just the man."

I hope you are right and maybe he can also inspire the rest of the team to play very  badly too

Oops, OK, I accept my 'majority comment' to Brooksy was said in the heat of the moment and this may have irritated some of the regulars on this BB. So, I apologise and should have shown more constraint.

But, in my defense, it was I who emailed Brooksy, in the first place, and persuaded him to make his two separate statements on this BB. Therefore, I felt I'd earnt the right to criticise.

Anyway, I will show more tact in future and not second guess the 'Vox Populi'.   smile

It wont be the same S&F if you show tact!  big_smile

Happy New Year. Looking forward to 2010 debates. smile

Re: Monty Panesar

Vox Populi, S&F ! - good job I have my Latin O Level!

Re: Monty Panesar

Excellent you have a worthy new year res, s&f. Mine is much less significant (eat less crisps  sad )

Re: Monty Panesar

Vaughan's on the radio saying it's a good move for Monty 'Sussex are a good club'.
He also says, though, 'Grizz can sign the players he wants to sign'. This was in co-commentary with CMJ, who had remarked that Adams seemed to have spoken to a few players at Sussex. Didn't hear the words tapping or up.

Re: Monty Panesar

I heard on TMS that Monty has put himself forward for the IPL auction. yikes

Apparently the cut list is decided today

Who is that man talking to Schlidd ?

Re: Monty Panesar

I would be surprised if he was picked. I think the IPL finishes before the start of the season anyway.

Re: Monty Panesar

nobody bid for him.  maybe they now know he cannot bat or field and that is quite important in 20-20.

life member - you're stuck with me!

Re: Monty Panesar

Hopefully he has only sussex to concentrate his thoughts and performances on.
