interesting piece. thanks kim-in-the-sun.
"As per the agreement before he came, his is a four-day focus. He's helping us in the nets during our one-day game, and helping develop our young spinners. There has been a lot of good banter in the dressing room."
what he really means is that monty doesn't get into their one day sides.
if he is really being paid serious money by sussex, we need him to give value and that means playing in all codes. i suppose.
i wonder what they are paying him in sa compared to what we are down for?
it will be interesting to see how many wickets he takes for us compared to chawla for slurrey. hopefully robbo and yardy have put their (ok, our) money on the winner !!!
PS as an aside but still on spinners, i presume the tahir who was picked for south africa is the former hampshire leggie? very good bowler even if possibly just short of top international class.
An encouraging article.
It seems obvious to me that Panesar will play in all the Sussex Championship games, whilst Beer in the OD games. As for Rayner, he'll be cover for both OR fill in as the second spinner when required.

Why is it obvious that Beer will play the one-day games - dont see that as obvious at all
sweaty,
Because Monty cannot bat or field to the high levels required in today's OD cricket. Beer is a better batsman and fielder, in my view.
Panesar was brought in to help Sussex return to the LV 1 Championship. That is my perception, anyway.
Northants got to 20/20 finals day with him in the team playing a part, so not sure he would be out of one-day team - is his batting actually as bad as everyone is saying, by the way.
Having said that, I will be disappointed if Beer doesnt get a reaonable amount of games this season
Wouldnt rule him out of T20 - wasnt he the most economical bowler in the semifinal against you this summer?

We have three spinners and their form will decide what games they participate in surely?

I made my comments more out of wishful thinking, as I would be appalled if the Panesar signing, stifles both Rayner's and Beer's development during the next few years.
Beer looked particularly promising in the OD games last season, raising positive chatter from the 'Sky' commentary team. My question being, will Sussex regularly choose two spinners for a Championship game and OD match?
If not, then what will happen to Rayner and Beer if Panesar is chosen for all formats of the game?
Last season Robbo made the point that with the work load involved in the CC and one day games, he needed to spread it over a full squad. I see no reason for it to be any different this season so agree with S&F's view for the start of the season at least, though Sweaty's view also holds as the season progresses or we come in sight of a trophy.
If we do use a settled one day side then this time around we should not look to 'strengthen' it with returning internationals for one match or hopefully the final. Let the guys who get us there get the reward.

Even if Chawla does get more wickets I think it will be important to bear in mind that if Chawla was at Sussex there would be one less seamer as we couldn't have signed Yasir.

Unlikely to happen, though, IM. I've generally not agreed with this view, either, always thinking 'of course we play matt, he's international class etc', but the strategy never seems to work, so I'm swaying
As you say Ard, somehow the strategy of bringing back the internationals never seems to work but the temptation is understandable.
funnily enough, a lot of the Board also moan when the England hierarchy refuse to release Matt and Luke to us
It hasn't really happened for Matt in big one day games yet. However, with due respect to Hoddy, Matt is the more likely one to have a match changing innings and I would want him in my side every time. He's overcome most hurdles in his career - remember the messageboarders who stated his keeping days were over for England and that he should just concentrate on his batting?
The Lions don't play their last two games in the supersport series (the SA 3 day competion) until March. As Monty hasn't featured in their one day side of late, is he going to stay there for two months not playing any cricket?
Monty was at The Wanderers today training with the England team.

he was indeed :
Interview with Monty during lunch interval on TMS today.
Gordon Parson's has been watching him in SA, says he has a Doosra but not sure if it's ready to be used in the middle yet.
With Swann showing how much damage can be done with a simple but almost forgotten art of the arm ball, I'd be happy enough if Monty risked the occasional one of those rather than bothering to develop a mystery ball.
One of the great arts to master for a spinner is how quickly you should bowl at on each wicket you come across - this was one of the little maestro Mushy's great strengths, and I would maintain is one of Montys weaknesses - so some progress in this direction would be good to see
Article in the Telegraph yesterday on Monty seemed to pin his problems on Mushy and the variations he tried to introduce.

that had crossed my mind over the past few months - he was never quite the same again after mushy got hold of him.
maybe mushy has made amends by getting him a long and lucrative contract with sussex?
