Parsons - I've only ever tried to provoke some views on youth really, I'm not trying to antagonise my team-mates, so to speak.  I know Robbo's been brilliant.  I would only question the Panasar/Beer/Rayner situation right now.  I will question the seamer situation if M-J is replaced by anyone other than Hatchett/Adkin/Thorpe/Rollings/Rayner.

I kind of agree about the four lads being given a good run but Joyce's injury forced Thornely in, while there was a place for Gatting straight away after H-B went - That's all fair enough though, no complaints there.  Hopefully Wells will come back strong and push anyone who's not quite doing it later on.

I'm very happy that Brown's been brought in to the CC team, he'll need a good run like what Hood got.  Hopefully he'll take that chance sooner or later but I hope he isn't discarded because of a shaky start.

At 20 I would ask why Hatchett and Rollings weren't offered contracts like Machan's at the start of the season, regarding something JCD said.  We had a shortage yet some lads were right there, always improving, getting better and better.  I think Hatchett's performances in Australia and so far this season for the seconds prove a contract should have been offered.

Contract or no contract when M-J goes there's room for one, assuming that Arafat, Collymore and Panesar's places are nailed down.  Some say Rayner, some say Hatchett, one or two have frighteningly said Keegan.

I ain't gonna get too much into the Panesar thing on this thread, it's probably obvious what I think about that.

Anyway, back to the other thing; no animosity intended, love Robbo and what he's done for Sussex, just question, and question only, some decisions regarding youth development.

All good stuff RF - I think effectively Hatchett and Rollings have had that type of treatment for the last couple of years with equal and free access to all the coaches, medical and physio, Academy experts, practice facilities, selection for 2nd and other teams etc. I'm not sure why Machan had his deal enshrined in a contract - probably he was felt to be a bit ahead of the others. A few weeks into the season that may no longer be the case. From where I'm standing, there has been a huge amount of support for these young players like there is for all young players. Its not always very visible.

Incidentally I think that mentioning Hatchett and Rollings in the same sentence ( I know I just did it) is a bit misleading. Hatchett is nearly there and indeed has made his first class debut this season. Rollings is in the box marked "watch this incredibly big lad. If we could turn him into a nasty fasty. Wow!".

PS We wont re-run the spinner debate yet again but over the past few weeks with Beer and Rayner both being picked ahead of Panesar it is plain that things are being done on merit - whether or not you agree with the Sikh of Tweak's arrival on the South Coast.

Re: Monty Panesar

If Hatchett does break through this season the prospects for Aga and Liddle won't be too bright.

He must be the next cab off the rank with some of the performances he is putting in. Also Scribe must be licking his lips with the headlines he can get from a name like Hatchett!

Re: Monty Panesar

I dont think scribe will have his work cut out too much if Aga gets cooking either

Call yourself a Sussex supporter? A genuine Sussex fan wouldn't have much such a crass comment.

And a genuine Sussex fan wouldn't slag off Panesar as soon as he's signed and before he's bowled a ball.....or Keegan....or Hoppo.....or indeed all the others.

Whilst it's great that Monty has gone to play at one of the smaller premier league teams rather then turning out for Hove or Eastbourne with all their Pros, I have to ask why he's not playing up at Three Bridges?  Developing the Asian cricket players in Sussex has always been a problem, and Crawley has one of the biggest communities in Sussex.  This could have been a great opportunity for the county to really develop interest from outside the normal areas.

Eastbourne are in disarray at the moment. They have just scrapped their 4th team from the East Sussex league and their 3rds who won division 2 of the the ESCL last season but weren't allowed to be promoted to div 1 on a technicality are now rock bottom of div 2.

Today, the 1sts were playing Cuckfield at home and got walloped (Ebne about 80 all out) and the match was all over by half three.

Re: Monty Panesar

big game for Monty at Arundel. A pitch which has offered turn and bounce in the past.

looking forward to seeing him in action this week. hopefully, this is the stage of the season when he comes into his own.

Re: Monty Panesar

George Dobell article on Monty (read past the RHB bit)

Some cricketers would baulk at the prospect of club cricket. It was, after all, little more than a year ago that Panesar was helping win the Ashes with that famous rearguard at Cardiff. But not Monty. He jumped at the chance.

"It was his idea," says Robinson. "He wanted to play and we wanted to find him a club which would let him bat in the top three. That wasn't easy, but in the end, we found him a spot with Bexhill [who are currently bottom of the Sussex Premier League] and off he went. We didn't want him to do too much bowling - he bowls a huge amount of overs in practice - but he bowled 24 overs the first week. That's Monty: he loves to bowl."

He impressed on and off the pitch at Bexhill. Not only did he take a stack of wickets (17 in his first three games) but, after a slow start (he scored 0, 2 and 6 in his first three innings), he made a half-century in his last game. And he introduced himself to the tea-ladies, exchanged mobile numbers with his team-mates, and helped to bring in the boundary rope and clean up the score box after games. "He did everything right," says the club's chairman, Martin Phillimore.

Re: Monty Panesar

Perhaps a little short sighted of some of the other clubs. If the price of having Monty's bowling was to bat him at 3, it is one I would be happy to pay.

Re: Monty Panesar

I don't know which other clubs were approached.  I'm sure Brighton and Eastboure would have had first pick as they normally get offered any pros that are available.  Bu its good for Bexhill that they were offered a Pro to help them out.

Forget the youngsters, we want the old timers back!

Re: Monty Panesar

Absolutely Lovely article on the Montster...

Of course the jury is still out on whether he was a good signing.....maybe 60 wickets next season will keep the jury out.

Re: Monty Panesar

I rarely comment about any players but, of all the wide ranging debates on the Message Board, some of the very polarised opinions about our signing Monty must surely rank as the most bizarre to date!

Our cricket management and captain were totally confident about the outcome should we be fortunate enough to recruit Monty and we were happy to back them. The rest is history.

Talking of history is Monty the first Sussex bowler to be part of an English Ashes party down under since John Snow?

Good luck to both the Mr Ps in our Test party from all of us at Sussex.

Re: Monty Panesar

I agree. It would be baffling that some didn't want a player of his quality were it not for that the same people whine about everything if it effects the advancement of their preferred player.

They totally miss the point that we needed to strengthen our bowling with proven quality. If you look at the five available in the closed season that could have made a difference, I'd take Monty ahead of Kabir, Jones, Hoggard and Tremlett every time. Even if all had wanted to come here, of the other four, three have poor injury histories and the other would only be a stop gap.

It was perhaps unfortunate for Beer and Rayner that he is a spinner but had it been one of the others, we would now be getting complaints about blocking the progress our four up and coming seamers.

The simple fact is that we are a better side with Monty than without him.

Re: Monty Panesar

Ravenshill - I can't deny that Panesar is of proven quality, or that he is our best spinner right now.  The point you say that some missed isn't missed, it's in another direction.  At that time we needed to improve our seam attack, and some felt a signing of Panesar's magnitude and expense was a bad move, given our spin and seam options at the time.

Re: Monty Panesar

And as was pointed out time and time again but you don't want to listen, none of the available seam options wanted to come here.

Re: Monty Panesar

I do wanna listen and I know that IM.
