Topic: Messageboard Jolly

Well here we go for the possibilities (bearing in mind Paperboy is often away, so we may be limited and we discount Surrey & Middlesex as too near)

GLamorgan 9th to 12th April - might be tempting for a long weekend but weather may be dodgy)
Glos  21st to 24th April (not good for me - year-end accounts so prob cant get time off)
Northampton 18th to 21st May (not grat for me either, but probably could)
Derby 4th to 7th June (Is derby a bit of a dump or is that unfair)
Leics    29th to 1st Aug (is that holiday time for people)
Worcester 13th to 16 th sept (bit late maybe in the year)

So any thoughts?

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Having never been to Worcester that would be my choice. Also the fact its the nicest place Looking forward to my first Jolly!!

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Some of the games go over the weekends which would not be good from my point of you. I believe these would be Glamorgan & Derby.

Northants could be a possibilty?

Personally, I would plump for Worcstershire to celebarte our promotion.

Re: Messageboard Jolly

What a sh*t choice, really brings it home to you that we are desperate to get back to Div1
April is liable to be wet and cold, dont fancy that.
Worcester is a bit late IMHO
That leaves Northants, Derby or Leics sad

Re: Messageboard Jolly

I wonder if the usual chaotic scheduling will throw up a few away games in a row for t20 or pro40?

We could go on a messageboard magical mystery tour around the country.... Not the greatest idea I know but looking at the options above I can't see us going to any of them...  sad

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Im actaully quite attracted to the Cardiff game - could be a laugh in Cardiff in the evenings - only downside is that it might be lashing down with rain for four days!

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Gloucester and Glamorgan are both 20/20 away games 2 days apart.

4 days in Cardiff with no play would be a bit expensive I think, drink and eat and gamble for 4 days, give that a miss i think

Cardiff, as you know i was there for the Ashes last summer, cracking ground, pubs just outside the ground, loads of choice for the nightlife, cracking curry house where they cook it all in front of you.

Derby, only good thing about Derby is if the cricket is sh*t then you could be at Trent Bridge to watch div 1 cricket in about 20 minutes.  big_smile  Not much of a tour for Flashing Blade!!

Worcester, been there with the MB twice now, could be same old same old.

Re: Messageboard Jolly

What about Leicester then - is that a possibility for some?

I went out with this girl that was at uni in Cardiff - really good nights out and lots of things to do and see, bit hard to understand them though...  wink

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Lad that sits next to me in the office is from Leicester, I asked for his advice...

"It's alright, loads of sla*s, loads of fights, pubs and bars are alright and you can get a good curry - everything easily accessible too"

I don't think the Leics tourist board are gonna be poaching him anytime soon but could be ok.

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Getting tricky this isnt it - so thoughts on Northampton & Derby next!

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Northants starting during the week is much better for me. Leicester could be an option I think it must be a Sunday start with the 2nd day on the Bank Holiday Monday.

The April games with likelihood of poor weather are ones that I will be giving a miss too.

Personally, I think Worcester is the best bet :- nice ground, September weather better than April, outside of schoold holidays.

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Good choice of hotels in Derby, Days hotel is 100 yds from the ground and city centre is only 1/2 mile away

Never use a Days hotel...

Re: Messageboard Jolly

I will go with the majority, but if I had to pick one it would be Derby. As said before if we pick Cardiff it's in April and could be damp. Derby is 4th June so it could be better weather. we may not get another chance to visit Derby in 2011!!  wink

We go regularly to Worcester (and why not) so it could be a yes for a second (!!) jolly if we are in with a chance of promotion.

So my choice is Derby.

As to hotels I am sure we can find one suitable.

I am still flying a PA28

Re: Messageboard Jolly

i do tend to agree that Worcester is too late and if there was somethig riding on it then id probably go anyway at the last minute.

I am not against the Derby trip when i think about it - its the best time for me and lets face it we are all fairly easily pleased - somewhere to sleep, eat and drink is fine with plenty of cricket !

Lets see what the other regulars think

Re: Messageboard Jolly

New road looks like a lovely setting annd cardiff looks a nice city

Re: Messageboard Jolly

As has been said Derby does have Days Hotel on the ground , which is cheap . The main pavilion is named the Lund Pavilion  ,must be some connection( my surname in case you did not quess) and the ground is not too bad now.
I do remember going to Derby a few years ago and there was a great old fashioned little pub serving real ale called the Railway Inn.The town centre seemed dead and that was in July but was a Weds!

I can imagine a few people will probably go to Worcs for either the 1 day or 4 dayer in any case .

PS to Woodie
Derby centre was so dead I went back to civilisation called Nottingham( should add I was
staying next to Tent Bridge as Sussex were playing there the next day)

I havn't booked it Dave wink , just saying it overlooks the ground and that city centre is close.
Anyway, if its like Egbaston this year, you wont see much of the hotel anyway lol

Just a bit of general advice for everyone really - I went to Birmingham on a course at the start of last year, arrived and went straight from the station to the venue and got chatting to some of the locals and they asked where I was staying, so I told them the Days Hotel and they started pis*ing themselves and rolling around on the floor laughing!!

Great I thought, it got to the end of the day and one of them kindly dropped me off, still sniggering, to this monstrosity in one of the worst areas of Brum - it was bloody horrible!! Made Fawlty Towers look like the Ritz!

I now book my own hotel if I have to go away with work and avoid Days hotels...  roll

Re: Messageboard Jolly

Cardiff is great but I fancy somewhere drier and warmer over Easter. Can't do Derby as it coincides with a school reunion Paperboy is organising. Leicester is a possibility and I'd go to a promotion party at Worcester anyway.

Northants would suit. Never been there but looks a nice ground in a functional sort of way (360 views of the county ground on their website).

Chris's 2 stop tour for the Gloucester and Glamorgan 20/20 matches on 11th and 13th June is a good shout. Its also the first 3 days of the World Cup so there's alternative if the weather lets us down.
