Topic: Sussex Legends
I was fortunate enough this past week to have the opportunity to meet that greatest of Sussex All Rounder legends Imran Khan. Still as lithe and lean as he was 27 years ago when playing for Sussex, he is now a brave and outspoken opposition politician trying to clean up Pakistani politics and campaign against indiscriminate bombing of formerly innocent communities. He also spends time on his charity-funded cancer hospital which he spoke so vociferously about when he led Pakistan to victory in the cricketing world cup in the early 90s. He said that cricket had taught him how to cope with the "ups" and "downs" of life. I asked him about his Sussex days. These were some of his happiest , he said, and he remains a good friend of Johnny Barclay. The team of 1981, may not have won the Championship but it must rank as the most balanced, swashbuckling and inspirational team in the history of Sussex CC with its larger than life characters and approach to the game.
