Topic: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Life is so predictable at times.

We get the excellent news of Dilshan joining Sussex for the 20/20. Two days later we learn Yasir Arafat will miss the first two months of the season.

Any ideas who should replace him?

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

the frustrating thing is that Yasir may well be in the squad without actually getting in the team- as he remains a player on the fringes.
i think we came to conclusion earlier this week when we discussed this that we would be happy with Rana, or at leat quite a few of us seemed happy

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

sweaty,

I would be happy with Rana. But who knows, the club may pull a rabbit out of the hat like they did with Dilshan.

The radio interview with Robbo on the above link is well worth a listen. But I have a question. Re: Dilshan, how long is he playing for Sussex in the 20/20?  Robbo says he is replacing Dwayne for the first part of the competition. Does that mean Dilshan may only play for just a few games and leave when Smith returns?

Back to Arafat, while it was on the cards, it's still disappointing to have the concerns confirmed.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

He will may well play more because of all the bans in Pakistan, but all this is confusing with players coming and going. I hope Dilshan plays slightly more than a few games because I will want to see him as often as possible, he is attracting fans already...

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Pakistan are busyb all summer except for six weeks in May June...It looks very much like Yasir could be out all season

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Fancy signing Yousuf or Younis?

shark64,

I was thinking along similar lines.

Change tack for those first two months and strengthen the squad with a top-notch disgraced Pakistan batsman to replace Joyce, while throwing in Liddle and Aga to the LV 2 lions.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

i can see where youre coming from, but think on balance the need for wickets is greater than the need for runs

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Yes I believe that too but I would just like to see another world class name at Hove big_smile
Malik can bowl a bit, but I know we are lacking in the seamer department

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Surely Dilshan will play every game in 2020 . As for Dwayne will he be picked to play SA
At present it seems unlikely .

Rana would seem a good choice as he has been in form this winter. There are enough decent Pakistanis to pick from .

Rana's figures were 10 wickets @ 41.20 last year. However, JJ van der Wath took 50 @ 24.74 at Northants. He can't come back as a Kolpak at Northants.........could we sign him as an overseas player though as he's a proven quick?

Arent we confusing ourselves here? He cant come back as a Kolpak because he cant get a work permit. To get a work permit to be Kolpak or overseas you need to etc etc...its the work permit rules that have changed not the kolpak ruling

he doesnt qualify for a work permit...

Aren't we getting to the stage now that we will have to say goodbye to Yasir for next season and start again for an overseas player with a blank sheet of paper? sad

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

I'm still keen on Sami who made a cameo appearance for Pakistan in Australia in the winter and looked to be in great form and the last time we saw him in a Sussex shirt he was batting with the Muzziah and winning us a trophy.

Maybe he hasn't played enough international cricket recently enough to get a work permit.

Apart from Mo and Rana is there anybody else you would like us to pursue?

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Ok - just been trawling around cricinfo for people unlikely to be involved in the World T20. Here's some names:

Simon Katich - may want a rest but totally tried and tested
Nathan Bracken - been injured. Maybe in the last chance salon
Phil Hughes - wildcard. Could benefit from really working on his game in difficult early season English conditions ( but I know we really want a bowler!)
Moises Henriques - an up and coming Aussie, often the very best type
Mo Sami - but he's a reserve for the Pakistan T20 squad
Rana - ticks most of our boxes
Clint Mackay - unlikely to make the Aussie squad and might fancy an English stint
Makya Ntini - more over the hill than runnning in down it at Hove
Kyle Mills - seems out of favour in NZ. has he been injured?
Mohammad Ashraful - desperate to get back for Bangladesh but not really what we need

Nothing really jumps off the page does it? It is obviously way more tricky than it used to be - perhaps I shouldn't have been so quick to sneer at Slurrey's Rao Iftikhar!.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Ikthibar may well be required by Pakistan - even if not in initial squad - probably next in line if there were an injury

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Wouldnt be suprised if we have lost yasir for this season ,which is a great shame and i just hope for his sake he plays rather make up the numbers for them.Im sure robbo has another rabbit to pull out of his hat, well hopefully anyway, myself rana or sami either of them would be fine replacements.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Rana or Sami amongst that lot for me - it's a seamer we need, and both have Hove pedigree, which is worth a lot.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Rana would be my first choice. He loves Sussex.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

I would favour Rana or Henriques.  I would not be against signing Younis though if Yasir is no longer available.  I realise that we are light on bowling but was very impressed by Younis at Yorkshire and it would be highly likely he'd get 1000 runs plus particularly if he was available all season.  It is the fact that our overseas players have generally been available all season which has given Sussex an edge over other counties.  Definitely wouldn't want any Australian test players because I have doubts about how committed they would be to the county game.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

I remember his stint at Yorks a bit differently, JCD - a couple of massive hundreds and not much else, not the consistent run scoring that Rudolph produced, who joined them (I think) the same season. Sorry, based on shaky memory, may not be right.

Irrespective, I would think Younis or Yousuf would be a risk - how motivated would they be?

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Rana or Sami for me as it is a seamer we desperately need.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Rana is the obvious choice. He knows the Sussex management; many of the players; enjoys  playing at Hove. He would fit in a lot faster than others. The only problem I see is if his appeal goes ahead.

Meanwhile, Rana is in demand elsewhere.

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Rana would be the best bet.  If we're uncertain over how long Yasir will be unavailable, then I'm not sure we can be certain of Sami's availability either.  Rana should be pretty much guaranteed for the whole summer.  Other than that, Henriques or James Hopes would do

Re: Yasir Arafat will Miss the First Two Months of the Sussex Season

Ardcarran - yes you're right although Younis would still have been a good bet for 1000 runs if he'd played the whole season.  I think he'd do even more at Hove.  If we did go for him, the club could try and produce a spinning wicket to make up for the lack of seam bowlers and benefit Monty and Rayner/Beer.  Younis would benefit himself as a quality player of spin.

Would like most other posters favour Rana although I wouldn't have particularly high expectations of him being near the level of performance he produced in 2005/6.  It is his variety of deliveries which are so valuable on the unresponsive Hove pitch.
