Re: England Players Resting Periods

Sheer hypocrisy from the ECB.

Matt Prior, or should that be Matt 'Van Winkle' Prior, has been ordered to take more rest periods by the English Cricket Board during the last year than a narcoleptic. Yet, Collingwood, Morgan and Pietersen, after the Bangladesh tour, attend the IPL tournament with the Board's blessing.

Perhaps, Matt the wicketkeeper should stop running between the wickets at the end of each over. It must be exhausting the poor lad out!  wink

Re: England Players Resting Periods

the thing is, S & f , you seem to be accusing Matt of something without being in full possession of the facts

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Gents

I appreciate this can be difficult from the outside - and please rest assured it can be from the inside too !

"Free periods" are the short windows England offer their contracted players . . . this is still controlled by the ECB

And as for Matt, we know he loves Sussex so will play whenever he possibly can. One factor to take in to account is the time these internationals spend not only playing, but just away from their loved ones - dont forget Matt now has a 1 year old ! Having been to South Africa, an Bangladesh already this winter perhaps it is right for Matt to have additional time with his family to recharge his batteries both physically and mentally

As you do, we await ECB confirmation though please rest assured we do work with them for the benefit of Sussex, England and the players concerned

Re: England Players Resting Periods

I would have felt a lot better about our chances in Wales with Matt at 5 but as the ECB are now his paymasters, they can do what they like.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Thanks, Brooksy - much appreciated as always. As you will have gathered from the posts, the frustration is that whilst what you say about players' needs is entirely reasonable, the ECB then allow the other boys to play to their hearts' content in the IPL.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

sweaty,

I am not accusing Prior of anything. I'm sure he wants to play for Sussex when an opportunity arrives. Instead, I am accusing the ECB of hypocrisy over who they order to rest and who they don't.

But I accept Brooksy's point that for some players with young children, a "rest period" can be viewed as "compassionate leave" in disguise. A point I made recently Re: Strauss.

well apologies s&f, but :-

"Perhaps, Matt the wicketkeeper should stop running between the wickets at the end of each over. It must be exhausting the poor lad out!  " is criticising who
and:-
"Matt Prior, or should that be Matt 'Van Winkle' Prior"
is criticisng who

Re: England Players Resting Periods

sweaty,

I am sarcastically jesting at the ECB. I would imagine Matt feels as frustrated at times as we the supporters. Not being allowed to play last October in the Indian club tournament was, in my view, absurd, and typical ECB hypocrisy, given the present situation with the IPL league.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

well that is that cleared up, then!

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Absoloutely illogical. Are these the people hoping to swap test cricket for non stop twenty20

yikes

Re: England Players Resting Periods

sweaty,

Good.  wink

Why does Matt the keeper run between the wickets after every over? Is there some exercise/health reason for this?

Those of us with young or once young children will vouch for the fact that four and a half months with little'uns does not constitute a rest...

But 4.5 months away from home is a rest smile

Why is it that, by squeezing the IPL in after the Bangladesh tour the ECB  feel KP and Colly can build form for the T20 - while at the same time they want to cut down the CC to give players more rest.

Are these positions compatible?

Warwicks lads both available for Friday I see - funny that...  wink

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Puhleeeeze everyone...just cut the crap and tell it like it is.

Lets paint a picture of yesteryear Vs a picture of today.

1970: The world is desparately hanging on to the last bastions of realism and pragmatism. Wages haven't yet gone beserk and people being human are basically greedy but generally realise that to earn a realistic wage they have to put in the 'hard yards' and they are happy to do this.

Matty: Geez boss I've just come off a hard tour and I'd really like to spend some time with my family.
ECB: You've just had 2 weeks at home with them, now get off to Cardiff and do what we pay you well to do. It is your living after all.

ECB: Ever heard of the IPL?
KP: Nope.

2010: The current workplace is full of politically correct trendy lefty do-gooders who get paid an inordinate amount of money to come up with ridiculous policy on work/life balance, paternity leave, equity and diversity, risk management, OH&S etc. etc. etc. They do this mainly because they are useless at the core business of the company they work for but have an Arts degree that tells everyone they know exactly what they are talking about when it comes to companies doing the 'right thing' by their employees. Everyone is in it for what they can get out of it.

ECB: You've been away from your family for a while, do you really want to spend 4 days in Cardiff?
Matty: You're kidding! What would I get out of it?
ECB: So how about we tell everyone you need a rest?
Matty: GREAT!

ECB: You've been away from your family for a while, do you really want to spend 4 weeks in India
KP: You're kidding! I stand to make a million quid in that time!
ECB: As long as you're happy
KP: Great!

So lets not kid ourselves with stories that deviate too much from this.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Why do we seem to let the ECB walk all over us? If Trott & Bell are available so should Prior.

Hardly fair is it?

Do Trott and Bell have young kids?

Should it really matter if players have been back from Bangladesh for two weeks?

I suspect there are hotels in Cardiff.

No. Though Trott has one on  the way.

If above is true all seems a bit arbitrary. Bell I can understand as he didnt play one days over the winter  mad . Trott's played  as much  as Prior though.

TBH Prior should just make best use of the opportunities available before the Tests this Summer.

Is Matt Prior the only England player resting?

Cook was resting as well

Re: England Players Resting Periods

He is the only wicket keeper with a young child at home, so comparisons with others are perhaps invidious. If, as now seems most probable, this is a genuine case of needing a rest and some time with his family ahead of a stupidly arduous England schedule, I am pleased to see him have that rest.

My only grouse would come if he had been wanting to play and was being instructed to rest. That really does not seem to be the case.
