He is the only wicket keeper with a young child at home, so comparisons with others are perhaps invidious. If, as now seems most probable, this is a genuine case of needing a rest and some time with his family ahead of a stupidly arduous England schedule, I am pleased to see him have that rest.

My only grouse would come if he had been wanting to play and was being instructed to rest. That really does not seem to be the case.

Fair points. But with a home game he does have the evenings with his family.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

ah thats better...just wiped away the tears so I could see the screen.

When I have to spend a month in the hot Arizona desert later this year, I wonder what my boss would say If I said I wanted to stay at home because I've got a new born pommy grandson who I like to watch on skype and I've got a ridiculous schedule coming up?

Hmmmmm...oh yeah.....don't think it could be reproduced on this site.  roll

i reckon my accounting skills would be far superior with a few months off - i might suggest it to my boss tomorrow

Re: England Players Resting Periods

There really isn't any reason for Prior not to play against Surrey. Pietersen and Collingwood have been allowed to play in the IPL. But it's the ruddy ECB we're talking about.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Swann is apparently going to play on Thursday for Notts as well.

Murray Goodwin is my God.

Don't you have any holidays or annual leave then?

Most people in the UK have about five weeks and some have more. That seems reasonable to me whatever your parental status and regardless of your ability to use skype.

Surrey 205 and 243. Sussex 416 and 33-0.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

robbo has confirmed that Luke and Yards atre required to go to camp on saturday at Loughborogh. No substituts allowed so they are both out of the Gloucestershire game.

just to be consistent out of a squad of 15, SAhahazad,Andeson,Broad and Bresnan dont have to camp and can play in the CC.

The captain will not be able to give a pep talk because hes in ndia still.

morgan and Pietersen are still playing IPl and will turn up directly in West Indies when ever they can.

First game is May 3 so they have time ...the camp is only mandatory for 8 out of 15

Re: England Players Resting Periods

WHY?????????????? Bl**dy infurating.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Agree it seems to be double standards all of the time. Sussex seem to come off worse than most counties over this resting issues.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Agree total double standards all the time and it seems to hit us more than most, or is that just my thoughts!

Isn't Sidebottom asking to play as well?  If so that is over half the squad missing - well at least they will get the back seats of the bus that is going to take them to Spain for the plane LOL

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Sorry, also posted elsewhere but cricinfo reckon Bresnan and Shahzad NOT available

Of course I have holidays - 4 weeks. Do I take them during busy periods? Do teachers take their annual leave during school term? Should cricketers take theirs during the cricket season? What's your point?

ECB: You've been away from your family for a while, do you really want to spend 4 weeks in India

ECB: As long as you're happy
KP: Great!

So lets not kid ourselves with stories that deviate too much from this.

So you really reckon Yardy has asked to join the get-together with the England boys rather than play for Sussex?

Probably didn't get the option of time off...and he's not contracted, so completely different scenario.

Yes, I reckon it is a mixture of players and ECB's wishes - a discussion, in other words, but sold as an ECB decision otherwise it makes the player looks bad.

We then almost never find out what has really happened, of course.

Although, given that Strauss is merily played six weeks of championship cricket now you can bet your bottom dollar he just didn't fancy the Bang trip.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

And he must hope the England squad based on current form

Re: England Players Resting Periods

somerset web site is quoting Brian Rose saying they have been told that keisweter is available to play for them against Notts this week

policy is as clear as mud, which is probably why there is no official communication. i mean how could you possible explain the rationale behind who plays and who "rests"?

Simple...it's mostly down to the players themselves.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Its also consistent for Robbo to say "There is too much cricket" and then allow his players the best possible opportunity to perform well in the World Cup.

Rushing around the country playing with different coloured balls and all that stuff is terrible preparation. For Yards this may well be the last chance saloon for England and getting it right is really important to him and therefore to us.

PS Croweater - my not exactly complex point was that we all need holidays and as cricket is now a 12 month global game there is no such thing as in season and out of season.

Surrey 205 and 243. Sussex 416 and 33-0.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

It does indeed make more sense that the players are mostly in charge. If it is entirely up to Yards, it is indeed a tough one for him. Of course he wants to take full part in his England chance, starting with the get-together. It gives the right impression to Flower, which might help nudge him up just enough to get into the starting 11. Fair play to him. As aewp says, could be his last chance.

Kieswetter? Entirely different - you can imagine Flower saying to him 'you're opening in the first match, so off you go to CC if you want to - you're side needs you after all, after that loss'

etc etc

And as aewp also says and as Robbo understands very well, if any of our players get in the side and does well it is v good for Sussex, but if they don't, everyone will soon forget they made the squad.

Re: England Players Resting Periods

Interesting that Figjam can play in India till potentially Sunday.
Maybe thats where we go wrong at Sussex, if we gave the ECB a back hander then they'd let our players play for us!
