Re: McCullum

Much more reassuring  to have him as our overseas player as there shouls be less confusion big_smile

Murray Goodwin is my God.

Re: McCullum

What a signing!
I saw McCullum get 170 odd in the NZ one day domestic final two years ago. It was probably the most savage innings I've seen (along with Gilchrist's in the World Cup final).
Last month on TV I also saw McCullum smash the Aussies in a T20 game. He has to be the best executor of the Dilscoop in the world.
Interestingly he doesn't keep wicket for NZ in the T20 so I guess we are signing him as a specialist batsman.
Brilliant stuff.

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.

Re: McCullum

First things first, welcome to the club Brendon.
So, that's McCullum in for Dilshan - who else have we got for t20 this year, i've lost track having not visited the messageboard for quite some time?!
Are the likes of Yas and Dwayne available this year, and if so how many overseas players can we play - this is all rather confusing for me...

The man with the midas touch.

Re: McCullum

what about matt??

Re: McCullum

Goldfinger - I think you will find that McCullum and Smith will be our overseas players for 2020.

Re: McCullum

Great signing well done to the Sussex staff getting a quality repalcement for Dilshan.

Re: McCullum

Great signing a brilliant player.

Re: McCullum

Great signing yes, and look forward to seeing him in action

Sharkey, wasn't it initially Dwayne and Dilshan to share the 20/20 so we had Yasir as the other for his death bowling?  If we don't have Yasir or Rana, won't the bowling be rather light, especially if RMJ or James gets a tonking early

Re: McCullum

incidentally, i have been racking my brains - have we ever had a New Zealander before ?

Re: McCullum

Heath Davis played for us once I think  . AEWParsons was a NZ but born in Scotland.

I expect Anyon to fill the gap left by Yasir. Hopefully it won't be Keegan!  mad

Re: McCullum

In my view, Dilshan's unavailability is a blessing in disguise. McCullum is a better all-round player and the Sri Lankan was only available for the first 5 T20 games due to the 'Asia Cup'. But, as ever, this leads to the question: How long is Brendan available for? Just the first few games as cover for Dwayne; or will he be staying in Hove for the whole tournament?

Today's press release only mentions June, although the New Zealand fixture list is bare during the English summer. On the other hand, McCullum plays for a variety of world T20 clubs, so is he already booked up elsewhere for July?

English counties are allowed to have 4 O/S players in their T20 squad, although can only play 2 in any given match. That means Arafat, Smith, Goodwin and McCullum. So, no problem there.

"Now the stumps have asked for pads!"
(Aussie radio commentator Kerry O'Keeffe as Rahul Dravid, bowled six times in seven innings during the present series, walks out to bat at the Adelaide Oval)

Re: McCullum

Goodwin isn't overseas.  NZ's schedule is much lighter than SL so I think he should be available for all of it.  Also Dilshan can bowl so therefore technically is the better all-round cricketer

Not that I can think of, and I have been around a long time!  That does not mean there will not be one name that comes out of the woodwork

I have it on good authority that with Goodwin it doesn't count as an overseas player because of his "situation"......

A tad harsh that, Sharkey. Dont think Keegan did a lot wrong in the one-day games he played in and I actually think he is an under-rated member of the squad. All about opinions I suppose...

Infamy infamy, they've all got it infamy

Re: McCullum

daveshark,

Murray was born in Zimbabwe; then emigrated to Australia; then came back to Zimbabwe, where he played for the country between 1998-2000. In 2005, Sussex had to sign him as a kolpak to keep his services. So, I presume he is still a kolpak player and has an overseas status for the T20?

Re: McCullum, he is a far better keeper than Dilshan, and although the Sri Lankan can bowl a bit of spin, Sussex already have a wealth of riches in this department. If McCullum is available for the entire T20 tournament then, in my view, he is a better signing than Dilshan and poses Sussex a wonderful headache Re: choice of wicket-keeper.

cheers sharkey! things are certainly looking up on the batting side with those two star players  big_smile
but from what others have said on this thread, would we be allowed to switch our line-up from game to game. e.g- bringing yasir into the 11 instead of mccullum if we so wish???

Re: McCullum

Good point about death bowling. Are we definitely only signing Rana to end May?

Are you sure ??  Not in the first team.

Re: McCullum

Davis played 9 2nd XI matches for Sussex in 1992

He then played once for Hampshire 2nd XI, his last senior game, against Sussex in 2004

AEW Parsons was definitely classified as overseas, as AEW Parsons will, i'm sure, confirm

Re: McCullum

great signing by the club. Obviously disappointing Dilshan's not coming but McCullum is a quality replacement and we can expect fireworks.

Don't think he will keep wicket for us, though.
