Topic: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Can we make in four wins in a row?

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Apart from the value of the points, the psychological advantage would be immense!

God gives all men all earth to love,
But since man’s heart is small,
Ordains for each one spot shall prove
Beloved over all.
Each to his choice, and I rejoice
The lot has fallen to me
In a fair ground—in a fair ground—
Yea, Sussex by the sea!

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

If we are able to keep the same eleven together for this match I might just be tempted to promote Tucker up a place. Firstly it would take some of the pressure off Hoddy who at the moment is just not a top six batsman. Secondly Tucker is on fire at the moment and the more in form batsmen we get in the top six the better. He has always been a very correct batsman and that would give us four in form batsman at the top of the order.
My team injuries permitting would be in this order....
Nash
Thornley
Gatting
Goodwin
Prior
RMJ
Hodd
Rana
Anyon
Collymore
Panesar
Rayner 12th man

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Out of interest, does anyone know when was the last time we played Leics in any format? Was it the last CC match of 2003 or have we met since then?

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Totally agree the same 11 for this match, we are performing so well as a unit, and sounds as if everyone is playing for everyone else as well

Lets make it 4 out of 4.

When did we last start a season with 3 out of 3 wins

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Oh yes Leics in 2003 now remind me what happened in that match .I seem to remember Muzza got a few runs !

PS What an amazing time we Sussex fans have had since that Leics game .And still nothing since will every equal that moment we won that title. No I do not care how many times I mention it .The most important event in the history of sport . More important than the Ashes .

Totesport League 2005.

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

I think we will keep the same side that won at Bristol. Leicestershire have two wins from two games so this is a big game so early into the new season

Weather forecast is so good for Wednesday I may even come on the train and watch myself cool

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

I recall that a certain L Wright appeared for Leics  at that epic match when Murray scored his runs and we ........ made history. Young Wright did not make his mark on the match (0 and 11 not out)  but it made him realise where his future lay.

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Leics may be more of a challenge with two wins and their new Australian overseas player. We have won three on the trot because we have been better than the opposition. Of course the batting might look a little stronger with Yardy,Wright,Joyce and RHB.After june we will probably have Joyce and Yardy and lose Prior and Wright but we will have a decent balance. As Robbo suggests this team will get better as the season progresses.

All of Jonboys fears have come to pass (I hope no more injuries or call ups) but the upside is we are forced to take a prolonged look at Thornley and Gatting ....while Gatting is already believed to be the real deal and just needs time,Thornley is doing his case a lot of good.A couple more good scores and we will all believe.

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

looking forward to this game. will do the first two days and, beware, i may even wear my shorts.

same side, same order for me.

Thanks for that. Still quite a while.

Yep.

It's great that Thornely is playing well as opener.  I was worried before the Glos game that we were having to patch together a batting order, and with a makeshift opener you can expose yourself very badly indeed (and I'm not talking about you in your shorts, BananaRana).  But he did well, in fact his contribution was vital, and it gives a much more solid feel to the whole line-up.

We do need the middle order to sort themselves out a bit, we can't rely on Tucker every single time.

Prediction of the week: a century from Hoddy batting at 6.

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Gatting is supposedly seen Gatting is supposedly seen as a opening batsmen as well.  I suppose when we get Joyce and Yardy back Gatting and Thornley will have slipped down the order

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

I would like to see Gatting at 5 and Prior at 3. That way Prior gets the opportunity to make a point to the selectors, and it takes Gatts out of the firing line a bit.

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Not a bad shout Silas, Joe hasn't got a big score yet this season but he played a very important innings against Slurrey for 15 when it was tough going and he did a good job for the team, backing him to come good though.

Same XI for me.

Good Old Sussex By The Sea...

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

I think we'll see Hodd staying at 6, though might see Prior and Gat swap.

These games are coming in thick and fast at the mo. We've got the momentum but Leics will be 'rested'. Which is better...?

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

Neither Hodd nor RMJ are really a number six. My reasoning was, simply that Tucker is in terrific form at the moment and is actually a very correct batsman. It would be nice for the top order to put some serious runs on the board, especially as Leicestershire have a few in form batsmen. Should be very good game I reckon.

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

i see mcdonald may make his leicester debut tomorrow. will strengthen their bowling - actually looking forward to just seeing a different team for a change. and i'd quite like to have a (brief) look at their young batsmen.

let's hope Hoggard doesn't repeat what he did the last time he was at hove.

Re: Sussex v Leicestershire LVCC2 Hove 27 April - 30 April

I can't remember whether it was 2004 or 05, but I did watch a terrific 40 over game at Grace Road where Leicestershire were cruising at around 190 for 1 and then lost their last 9 wickets for around 12 runs... Will House holding on to three huge skiers in front of the sightscreen at the Pavilion end.

Then despite losing regular wickets, we ground out the chase, mainly in ones and twos with Monty (mark 1) making a hundred, supported at the end by a certain Robin Martin-Jenkins, who hit the winning runs with a drive through the covers!

With that memory... and that of a the marching band belting out Sussex-by-the sea, while a very sporting Leicestershire side, including the teenage Luke Wright, sat on the grass, allowing our celebrations, as we took our first Championship... I hope we can add to that list of rewarding Sussex-Leicestershire clashes by stumps on Friday.

Logic suggests that this will be our toughest test so far, with Leicestershire having also won all their games this season, two in the CC and one against a fairly impressive Notts outfit on sunday.

We all know about Hoggard.  He loves to bowl at Hove, and indeed had it not been for family commitments which kept him in the North, he may even had been a Sussex player this season.  We certainly hope that he doesn't pull another hatrick out of his magic bag this week!  They've got very promising youngsters, Cobb and Taylor, who are now establishing their place in the batting lineup and Du Toit made a good century on Sunday.

So I certainly don't underestimate them... this will be tough.

Considering the England call-ups, the injury to Joyce, the loss of players, due to rules and poaching, that we would have loved to have kept... we have started amazingly, and hats off to all those who have played their parts.

I think that we are all delighted that this time Thornely is making ginat strides forward and hopefully he can progress further this week.  Big, big knocks from Nash, Goodwin and Prior would certainly help our cause and a return to form for Hodd and Gatting would be a bonus.

And if RMJ just keeps on doing exactly what he has been doing... and the bowlers carry on exactly as they have been doing... well that 100% record would be intact.

But that of course is ignoring the Fox's aspirations for this game, and they will have no doubts as to the importance of this game, even at this early stage of the season.

So let's hope for 4 more days of wonderful weather... and may the best team win... which of course we hope is Sussex.

And if he were to score big, I wonder what Du Toit's nick-name will become... emerging from the direction of the Tucker Pavilion!

Good stuff, mentor

According to the BBC, decent forecast for two days, heavy cloud on Thurs and heavy rain on Fri. So we need to knock them over in three days  wink

Apparently, though, there are much better weather forecasts about. Our resident expert is Deep Fine Leg. If you're out there, DFL, we'd appreciate a decent rain forecast

It certainly looks like a slow breakdown Thursday into Friday.. but the heavy rain may hold off until Friday night...

Well, I have finally escaped from Spain, to find that my blackberry did not lie about the scores - even if it cannot pick up the new Argus commentary or load cricinfo or this site!

Hopefully my return to the board will not be a bad omen ...

Happy New Season to one and all!!
