What about playing two spinners? Northampton has a tendency of being a spinnners wicket.
I would include Ben Brown after his maiden hundred against Cambridge University.
My XI: Nash, Brown, Joyce, Goodwin, Prior, Hodd, Martin-Jenkins, Rana, Rayner, Beer, Collymore

I am fairly sure Northants is no longer the sponners paradise it once was, and its a bit harsh to drop Thornely - so Joyce for Gatting and Rayner for Monty should be the only changes
I like both squads, but it will be interesting to see how Beer gets on again today. In the Middlesex game, Anyon didn't bowl a great deal so I am not sure where he stands in our attack. I think Brown certainly has a very good chance of pushing for a place, so the team selection will be quite interesting.

I think you are right - and Monty could testify to that. They havent started that well but they seem a decent team with a pretty good, experienced batting line up. I still think they will be a challenger this year.
It would be harsh to drop Thornely but I think Brown has that extra touch of class. Anyon didn't bowl much in Middlesex game. I think Beer has been very unlucky in terms of first team selection this season and deserves a chance.
I would play Brown ahead of Thornley. Brown deserves a run in the side.
So we could be playing 3 keepers?
Sussex need to find out if Brown or indeed Hodd are good enough to play solely as a batsman, if so they are more likely to stay with us in the long term.
I doubt if any of them would stay with us purely as a batsman. They are all far too good keepers for that.

Agreed.
Thornely may have staved off the threat of Brown with his innings today and hearing the comments on Sky about Robo wanting to make Beer a more attacking bowler and how playing so much one-day cricket last season made him into a more defensive bowler suggests a first team call up is unlikely at this stage.

Not only harsh but also completely ridiculous. We are as likely to leave out Goodwin.
Yes (and irrespective of yesterday's innings) it would b e a very odd message to Thornley to drop him after what he's done so far in tricky April conditions.
Thornely has done well overall and will keep his place for this game and maybe the Worcs and derby games.Yards will take Prior's place in those games so hopefully Thornely will have gained a run of 8CC games .
What's the story with Rana? Thought he was off to Pakistan to have his appeal heard this week? And does anyone know when Arafat arrives?
still up in the air on Arafat.
two changes for me - Rayner for Monty, Joyce for Gatting.
Thornley has done a good enough job to retain his place and believe he will continue to improve, also good to see ollie being given a starting place. On ranas appeal did spot something on sky sports news about appeals being put back to later this month.
According to the BBC, Boje has resigned as Northants captain.
Andrew Hall takes over - not exactly looking to the future!
Squad according to Northants website:
WAT Beer
JE Anyon
CD Collymore
EC Joyce
MW Goodwin (captain)
AJ Hodd
RSC Martin-Jenkins
CD Nash
Rana Naved
MJ Prior
OP Rayner
MA Thornely
Looks like two spinners a possibilty, perhaps Beer worked on his bowling enough for Robbo to give him a go. Was told (uncornfirmed) at Taunton that this will definatly be Ranas last game until the championship game at Derby .
never seen much of thornely until saturday on sky, looks a good player, organised so why would we drop him? brown is going be a good player hopefully, but promoting him after one excellent innings against a university side... not for me. yes, i am aware of brown's huge potential and the fact that he has been around the first XI for afew years now, but dropping thornely would really knock his confidence because he hasn't done alot wrong so far in the season.
It's not long before the the Bangla tests start so will Matty keep wicket? He's had plenty of batting practice and seems to be hitting it well. He needs to ram home how much better his glovework is than Kieswetter's and doesn't want to be undercooked. I would just swap Joyce for Gatts and Rayner for Monty
I would play two spinners and drop Anyon. Also, Joyce for Gatting and Rayner for Panesar.
Fall of wicket
16 Thornely
45 Joyce
105 Goodwin
142 Prior
166 C Nash
168 Hodd
173 Rayner
175 Martin-Jenkins
175 Anyon
175 Collymore
What a collapse, this is back to last season again with the usual suspects failing again ![]()

Something wrong somewhere. Indeed memories of last season back in play.
We certainly look a batsman light at the moment without Yardy or Wright.
From 142-3 to 175 allout!! The bowlers are going to have to save the day again, or we could be staring a second consectutive defeat in the face following our fine start to the season.
Our batting is feeble in the extreme and has been for a few years. People need to take off the blinkers,we may have a fine looking batting line up on paper however in reality it is something else. However its one thing identifying the problem but how do we fix it? Without strengthening the batting, and I understand the difficulties of doing that, perhaps we need to look at the coaching.
