Re: Yasir Arafat

Alison Mitchell is tweeting that Pakistan are about to call up replacements... Short list of players match fit, not across the world, used the conditions, strong one day performers.

Re: Yasir Arafat

"Left out" - but not suspended ?

Saeed, speaking from Taunton, added: "The T20 squad will remain what it is here this morning, ie 13 people.

"When we play the one-day internationals we will be asking for replacements to make the squad up to 16.

"We have not decided on replacements, but all Pakistan cricketers are contenders. The selectors will decide."

well all bar three that is !

oh dear.   where is rana???

Re: Yasir Arafat

Pakistan have called up Asad Shafiq and Mohammad Irfan as replacements for the suspended Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif for the one-day series in England.

"Both the players are currently playing with the Pakistan A team in Sri Lanka and will now join the senior team by next week," a Pakistan Cricket Board official said.

Which probably means that Yasir will remain available for us till the season ends.

Re: Yasir Arafat

A huge relief for us, but not a sensible call by the PCB. After all Yasir is here, with the right visa, and is acclimatised.

Presumably politics come into it.

Re: Yasir Arafat

Odd call.

Maybe they aren't impressed by his form.

Exactly. It would be odd if they were.

Re: Yasir Arafat

yasir arafat is a good young left hander. i like his cover drives. he is very controlled batsman.  neutral

Re: Yasir Arafat

He is finishing the season hot, his bowling as been superb this game and useful run maker as well.I would be happy to see him back next year, but i guess depends on who we sign in the winter.

Re: Yasir Arafat

Strong finish for Arafat but I think we should look elsewhere for next season.

Re: Yasir Arafat

he is currently the yasir of old --- the one we remember from his first time with us and know and love.

not the look-alike who turned up last season.

Re: Yasir Arafat

I am with RF on this . Yas has looked good the last 2or 3games but without taking anything away from him Northants had nothing to play for and were poor. Yas was not good enough in Div 1 last season . It depends on what english players we sign and who is available as the IPL is to mid May .If we cannot sign anyone of top class we may well see him back but I do not see too many 5 fors from him in Div 1

One good game in 2 years of CC does not make him an automatic to come back.

Trying to get agood OS is getting harder . The standard of OS this season is the poorest since 1968 when the floodgates opened.

Re: Yasir Arafat

what we don't want is players coming and going all season.

and possibly a panic signing or two along the way.

no continuity and lots of extra expense on agents, flights et al.

Re: Yasir Arafat

MBTS makes a good point. It would be prefereable to have one player all season...Is there one better than Yasir available?

In 8 games he scored 254 runs @42 and took 33 wickets @24.75.This is expensive compared to Coreys 57 wickets @19.87 and he also conceded 3.52 an over compared to Coreys 2.74. But also good in one dayers.

But he was getting better (and fitter)...Yasir can bat at 7 or 8 which is also a help.I would prefer him over Rana or Corey if that were the choice at the same cost.

Re: Yasir Arafat

Completely with MBTS on this one.  One of the many reasons for our success in the last decade has been the wise choice of overseas players.  What we don't want is a succession of journeyman mercenaries who have no love of Sussex and who just turn up for the money.

Mushy, Rana and Yaz all put Sussex into their blood and that makes a difference.

Yassir is looking back to his very best.. no matter who the opposition is.  He is leaner, fitter, faster, is zipping and zagging the new ball around, and finding reverse with the old.

The injury last year withstanding, his action is such that he keeps injury free and can bowl long spells.  His recent form is such that we almost expect 4 wickets each innings... and are now getting them.

Who would strengthen our bowling attack over 16 matches next season?  I like Sidebottom, but he is becoming injury prone... and if he did bowl out of his skin, he'd be straight back into the England side.  Also he is a northerner through and through.  Would he, and equally important, his family, settle down here in the south?

No for me, I want to see Yassir back.  He's part of the happy Sussex dressing room, he has a lovely personality, and back to his best, I confidently see 50+ wickets next year and plenty of late order runs too.

We lose this excellent cricketer at our peril.  Here's hoping for a hatful at New Road this week.

Re: Yasir Arafat

Completely agrre with you Mentor47....I could not have put it better.
Let's hope the Yas man is back and firing on all cylinders in 2011 !!

Re: Yasir Arafat

With Colly leaving, we should definatly keep Yasir.
We can't afford to lose any more senior seam bowlers, so far this season we have lost RMJ, Colly and Kirtley, and not really replaced Lewry from last season as yet. At the moment it looks like only Khan is coming in.
Time for Robbo to get his boots on, just the sort of seamer we need at the moment!

Re: Yasir Arafat

Rana for me but availability for most or all of the season is important.  I certainly agree that we don't want players coming and going.  I'm concerned that Yas won't be as effective as Rana in Division One.

I would be pleasantly surprised if we could pick up an experienced former international from SA or Australia, someone still on the brink and not over the hill, someone like De Wet or Bollinger.

Re: Yasir Arafat

If we don't keep Yas I'm going to stamp my foot! I mean it! I'm not messing about. lol

Rana? we might as well get Imran Khan back. He was magnificent for about 5 matches this season and then seriously ran out of puff. I'm afraid you are barking up the wrong tree there Mr F.

I was amazed when Rana came back as devastating as he ever was, with bat and ball.  You are right AEW, he did fade but lacked stamina because he had played little cricket in the preceding 10 months.  If we were able to get him for a full season, however, I'm sure Robbo's team would lick him into shape, just as they had to with Dwayne Smith.  Rana's hardly an old man after all.  At the same time, I would want to keep Yasir as our second overseas player with Big Mac for the T20  campaign.

I don't think you can underestimate just how much playing for Sussex means to our 2 illustrious Pakistanis and that really counts in tough situations.

Re: Yasir Arafat

My problem is that he did not really produce for Kent in 2008 and certainly did not for us last season , ie  in  Div 1 at 4 day cricket . He certainly was not such an effective 1 day bowler this season but did bowl well in the last 3 or 4 games but Derby and Northants were poor and he wont see such teams in Div 1 .

It depends on which englishmen we sign.

Re: Yasir Arafat

Theres a lack of decent o/s players ,and i would be happy having yasir here next year but only if fully match fit from the start of next season.
