Topic: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Well the big news is I will be there.BA to Gatwick overnight, arrive 8.40 am.10.03 train to Guildford,Taxi to Guildford cricket club.

So if any of you see an exhausted zombie carrying a suitcase, eating fruit ,do say hello and claim your cherry. If I am fast asleep tell me the score.

Hopefully the weather will be good and I hope to see the usual suspects.

The team that won at Leicester may be changed to inlude Thornley or Rayner for Aga ,but I expect Hatchett will be retained.I dont think any last minute rumours about selection or injury will change the wicket preparation which will likely be seamer friendly again.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

I would expect Thornely or Rayner for Aga to be the only change.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

I think Guildford favours spin anyway, from what ive heard. TC - Im trying to arrange things so i can be there Monday - will know later on in the week - you may have to put up with Junior!

Quite so.If Wright can bowl,Aga can be omitted.Arafat is a real proper batsman like RMJ so you could risk him at 7 and Ollie at 8, or bring in Thornley depending on the wicket. I am sure Bruce can be relied upon to feed some false selection rumours to the opposition big_smile .Thats a joke as I dont believe for one second deliberate lies were published to influence pitch preparation.Indeed our squad announcements are often tentative with new faces on the day.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Anyone know how long it takes to walk to the ground from the station?

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Welcome Carisbrooke- not long 10 minutes maximum.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

According to Google it is 0.6 of a mile.... 12 minutes

Good spot but these are different games...championship and 20/20.In 20/20 I would have the extra batsman, but I still think in the 4 day its a choice between Ollie and Thornley.Even Lord RMJ was used mostly at 8 rather than 7 and I think that is probably the best spot for Arafat.

I expect Yardy and Robbo know best so we will see.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Different formats right enough. I guess my view would be that if you class Arafat as a proper batsman then he's probably then good enough to bat seven in T20.

I would agree that in the CC that he should be batting at eight.

As you say, we shall see.

Well yes Yasir is top of our averages followed by RMJ.But I guess Ollie,Hatchett ,Monty and Corey is quite a long tail.

I will be there with Bromley Chris.  Does anyone know how to edit your name on this site? neutral

I was at the Oval when Surrey scored 386-3.  Surreal.

If Rory captains with anything like the authority he showed at Arundel, you'll have serious problems.  However, Surrey at the moment are a bit like Pakistan - awesome one game, dreadful the next.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Guildford doesn't favour spin - Croydon does.

Saw Harmison there a couple of years ago - wonderful bowling.

A bit indifferent.

I saw one of Graham Thorpe's best innings there a decade or so ago (he mentions it in his autobiography) on a green wicket where about 15 wickets fell in the day and he scored 100.

I suspect you'll beat Surrey in the CC.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

"Surrey at the moment are a bit like Pakistan - awesome one game, dreadful the next."

Leaving base camp and ascending the mountain is usually two steps up, one and a half back. At least Surrey have started the process. Last season the club couldn't even find the mountain.

I reckon supporters are in for an exciting next few years.

"Now the stumps have asked for pads!"
(Aussie radio commentator Kerry O'Keeffe as Rahul Dravid, bowled six times in seven innings during the present series, walks out to bat at the Adelaide Oval)

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Think we will go with the same eleven as leics and give rags some first eleven time in the game.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Not if Wright's bowling.  Thornely in for Aga I suspect will be the only change.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

I would support Thornely in for Aga if it's more suitable for seamers.  Really feel we need to see what Thornely can do with the ball in one day cricket.  The Notts T20 match showed that a medium pacer like Mullaney can be a matchwinner and it's not an option we are using at the moment.  If one of the spinners gets the treatment then there are sometimes limited options.  Also I don't feel that Aga is particularly strong in one area as an all-rounder - more a bits and pieces cricketer.  Thornely is capable as a batsman in first class cricket and could hold down a regular one day place if he can do a job with the ball.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Thornely used to open the bowling for Brighton College but that probably said more about the quality of their seam bowling resources at the time then the quality of his bowling! I do think that if you are going to play Thornely in one-day cricket he has to bat at 3.

I see Adkin and Liddle have been added to the team that played up at Lancashre. I can understand Adkin's inclusion (and I would include him in the team instead of Aga) but what has Liddle done in the seconds to warrant being selected for the firsts? Robbo said it was because Liddle gives us a left arm option but what about selecting Lewis Hatchett instead? Adkin and Hatchett are a better long-term proposition than Aga or Liddle!

I thought at age 26 he should be in the first-team Mart.....

Liddle should be in the 1XI but then he should be taking stacks of wickets for 2XI which he isn't as a return of 7 wickets @ 59 shows. He is the 14th top wicket taker in the 2XI behind Beer, Hatchett, Aga, Panesar, Chadwick, Rayner, Rollings, Adkin, Anyon, Thorpe, Kirtley, Keegan and Roberts.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

That is a totally insensitive post Mart and shows a complete lack of consideration of an ongoing injury problem that has held Liddle back for two seasons. The club have stood by the lad through a very frustrating time for the bowler. He's only now just beginning his season and hasn't probably even reached full match fitness yet. Now is the time to support the lad, not kick him when he is doing his best.
Please think a bit more before you criticise individuals, it can be very damaging.

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Get real Paperboy this is PROFESSIONAL not amateur sport. If a player cannot stay fit for long enough that's hard luck. If Liddle isn't fully fit why is he even being cosidered for the firsts? Liddle has been given plenty of opportunities by Sussex over the past four years. I doubt  any of the other seventeen counties would have shown the same level of patience and persistence that Sussex have.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

What do say now Sharkey? He hasn't had any chances since 2008 because of injury . He took his chances today.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Mart, I don't think I'll even bother responding to that. It just about sums you up.
Stick to playing your fantasy cricket where you can shift players in and out of a career at will without giving a toss.

Re: Surrey v Sussex CC @ Guildford Mon Aug 9

Having seen the pitch today I anticipate a similar wicket for the championship match. Therefore I don't think we'll play Ollie Rayner as the second spinner
There also remains a doubt about Luke Wright's fitness.
Possible team:
Nash
Yardy
Joyce
Goodwin
Thornely
Hodd
Brown +
Yasir
Hatchett
Panesar
Collymore

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.
