Topic: Pro40 Qualification?

I've had a look at the current tables (the morning after victory over Somerset).
Qualification for the semi-final as the best runner-up isn't yet in our own hands. If we win our two remaining games against Glamorgan and Surrey we would finish on 18 points in Group A.
In Group C Warwickshire and Notts still have to play each other so runner-up of that group cannot get to 18 points.

The only teams that can get more than our second placed possible total of 18 points are Yorkshire and Gloucestershire in Group B. Therefore we need one of them to lose a game.

This means that today's televised encounter between Gloucestershire v Essex starting at 4-40pm is important to us. A win for Essex will put our destiny back in our own hands.

If you are looking for omens, Essex beat Somerset in the closing stages last years Pro40 that helped us retain our title. And also in 2006 Somerset lost at Horsham in a rain affected match that helped us on our way to winning the C&G Trophy.

From 2014 I have doubts that being a Sussex fan will continue to be the best sporting pleasure on the planet.

surely if Essex win all their remaining 4 games they would have 19 points ?

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

PB  . Sorry I have posted similar on the other thread. With Essex Notts and Warks losing yesterday it really makes things look brighter for us.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

3rd man to keep this all on this thread you are right if Essex win their 4 games they will finish ahead . Whoever wins tonight will have to lose or get aNR for us to go through .

Well spotted Clouseau. Perhaps I'll just leave it and see what happens!

At least Essex still have to play both Yorkshire and Gloucestershire. Things are at least looking hopeful.
We could do with Holland doing us a favour as they have to play Gloucestershire twice and also Essex.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

My understanding is that there are 4 other teams which could take the 4th place away from Sussex: Glos, Essex, Notts and Warwickshire.

If all these teams won their remaining games the points would be: Sx: 18 Glos: 20 Essex: 19 Notts: 19 Warks: 18. So, both Glos, Essex and Notts MUST lose one game, while Sussex's run rate has to be the best. Either Glos or Essex will lose tonight, so that improves the equation.

I am presuming that when teams have lost a similar number of games whilst equal on points, it is then down to the better run rate? Presently, Sussex's RR is by far the best to Somerset in all 3 groups.

PS: Just noted that Warwickshire play Notts on Sept 4th, so there has to be a loser. This too improves the equation.

PPS: On a sobering note, even if the Houdini act occurs, Sussex will be without Yardy and Wright for the must-win Pro40 match against Surrey (Sept 4th); as well as the Semis (Sept 11th) and Finals (Sept 18th).  sad

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

We want Essex to win tonight because Gloucs have the Dutch twice. Never imagined I would ever say this but 'COME ON ESSEX!!!!'

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Yep, I agree, we need an Essex win, as the chavites still have to play Yorkshire away on Sept 4th.

or as Paperboy notes above we  could just rely on Bas & Co to do us some favours  wink

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Essex doing well. Glos 87-4 off 21 overs.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

142-7 off 34. Only 6 boundaries. Franklin no fours at all! What's a good score, one wonders. Probably not this

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Essex on course at 78-1 off 18. No excuses not to get the required 185. They need less than 5 an over to win. Just get them in singles.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

if the qualification relies on two wins from two, we may come unstuck on wednesday because of the weather. Was probably going to attend the match as well, damnit!
heavy rain all night, according to bbc.  sad

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Well Essex have squeezed home against Gloucs  smile

Who is that man talking to Schlidd ?

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Essex beat Glos tonight, so all goes to plan. Now Essex must lose a game and Notts to loose a match and we're there! So long as Sussex win their last two games and maintain their run rate.  wink

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Ok... so far, that's what we wanted: Essex (with the poorer run rate) beat Gloucestershire.  So now, if we win our last two, we will beat Gloucestershire.

Essex could still pip us, but their run-in isn't at easy, including as has already been noted, a final game away to Yorkshire.  Of course, the best scenario would be if Northants beat Yorkshire first, then, as long as there is a result, we should pip the loser of that game to the best 2nd place.

But then there is the rain factor.  Still we shouldn't be greedy: top of the CC Div2 table... let's win that ang return to the top flight where we belong with a 10th trophy in ten years... we don't really want to win another Pro40 at Lords... do we??

And re the praise being heaped on Yards.  When I first saw him play, I didn't even think he's make it as county pro, with his innocuous medium pacers and his difficulty in getting the ball off the square with that odd stance and big stride across the stumps.

Now, he is almost without peer as a one-day player, and it's hardly surprising that he is becoming the cornerstone of the England side.  I think we could expect huge interest from the IPL too, so we may have to put up with seeing less and less of our now favourite son.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Not the most riveting game ever but the result we were after...

Get the feeling that weather may have a big part to play yet in the remaining fixtures for all.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

Now that's me in agreement with Mr Soft and Fluffy... and clearly there was a case of mistaken identity with that always soft and fluffy Mr Fawden.... so it must be that pesky Mr Sweaty who I was thinking of.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

weather now says heavy rain on Weds so if it is that will be it for us.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

If the forecast is right rain comes late...day night game it is for Sky

normal 1.30 start no problem

Always very tricky working this out, but I'm fairly sure Notts DON'T need to lose - we should pip Wrwks on run rate. Our two problems are Essex and Gloucs if they make hay against the Dutch and their RR rockets.

Of course a Somerset choke is not impossible. If they lose two from Surrey, Worcs and Glams then we're in on RR.

If we win both our games.

And the weather is nicer for us than our rivals.

And if I've got this right, which is unlikely.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

If we win both games (automatically taking Surrey out of the equation), the 2nd placed qualifier can't come from Group C due to the Warwicks v Notts match. If Warwicks win, Notts can only get 17 points and if Notts win or tie/NR, Warwicks can only get 17 at most.

Essex can finish above us only if they win all their matches and there is nothing we can do about that. A tie/NR will put them on 18 points but with 1 less win, which if I understand the rules correctly, gives us the better record.

Gloucs can finish level with us if they win all three and it is down to NRR. We are currently about 125 runs better than them in difference between scored and conceded. Not an absolutely scientific measure but it gives a rough idea. Obviously a good win in their game in hand v Netherlands can wipe that out and more.

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

So I did have Notts/Wrwks situation wrong then - no surprises there  hmm

Re: Pro40 Qualification?

The current weather forecast for Wednesday afternoon and evening is dire. We could well be looking at a wash out - what does that do for our chances?

If you were lucky enough to have been at Horsham and seen the conditions they played in against Somerset you would be full of hope.
