Forecast is bound to change again. If we get washed out then Essex or Glos will likely finish above us.
One piece of encouragement for us is that Yorkshire will be desperate to beat Essex in order to claim a home semi-final tie.
21.9.3 The first-placed team from each group and the best second placed team will qualify for the draw for the semi-finals. This will be a free draw save that the two best first-placed teams will receive a home draw.
21.9.4 The tie-breakers for teams finishing on equal points will be:
a Most wins in Group matches
b When teams have both equal points and equal wins and are in the same group, the teams will be ordered according to which team achieved the most points in the matches played between them.
c If still equal, the team with the higher net run rate in the Group Matches will be placed in the higher position (see below).
d If still equal, the team with the higher number of wickets taken per balls bowled in the Group Matches in which results were achieved, will be placed in the higher position.
e In the event that teams cannot be separated by (a) to (d) above, this will be done by drawing lots.
We have to win our last two matches - obviously; Notts have to win their group over Wwrks and Yorks have to win over Essex. It would be helpful if a Rotterdam bar or two "did" for the Essex side as extra insurance for us, because I rather fear that now Ten Doeschate is back Essex will win their group leaving us pipped by Yorks who will only have lost twice, unless beaten by Northants.
From Glamorgan's web-site:
Match Preview
Glamorgan travel to the South Coast for their next contest in the Clydesdale Bank 40 with the Welsh county meeting Sussex at Hove on August 25th for a floodlit 40-overs contest scheduled to get underway at 4.40pm.
Their most recent visit to Hove for a one-day League match saw the contest in May 2007 being washed out after just 19.4 overs. The previous year it was a case of a torrent of runs, rather than a deluge, that greeted the Welsh county in their Nat West Pro40 League game at Hove, with Matt Prior scoring 141 from just 85 balls as Sussex raced to a nine-wicket win in the game which had been reduced to 33 overs.
Glamorgan’s last victory in a List A game at Hove came on August 30th 1998 when the Welsh county won the 40-over contest in the AXA League by 37 runs, thanks to a typically gutsy 63 from Tony Cottey and a superb spell of 4/36 by all-rounder Adrian Dale.
Team News
The Glamorgan Dragons have named the following 13-man squad for the match against the Sussex Sharks - J Allenby, MJ Cosgrove, WD Bragg, NA James, TL Maynard, BJ Wright, DO Brown, MA Wallace (captain and wicket-keeper), JAR Harris, WT Owen, DA Cosker, CP Ashling and HT Waters.

Tram Man,
A washout and one point is not good enough, although as paperboy says, conditions at Horsham were pretty bad but Sussex still got 2 points. Let's hope the rain never materialises on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, I note Nash has signed for Otago Volts, thanks to Brendon McCullum, for their own Autumn NZ T20 competition. I find this an exciting development.
McCullum could really help Sussex over the years. Apart from persuading other Kiwi/international players to join him at the club in next year's English T20 tournament, players like Prior, Wright, Yardy etc.. could also join up with the Volts and gain valuable overseas experience.
I can see the Sussex/Kiwi connection proving quite fruitful!
Tram Man wrote:The current weather forecast for Wednesday afternoon and evening is dire. We could well be looking at a wash out - what does that do for our chances?
If you were lucky enough to have been at Horsham and seen the conditions they played in against Somerset you would be full of hope.
I was, PB, I was. By the boundary boards in front of the pavillion, huddled under a Sussex brolley ![]()
Can see no possible chance of playing wednesday. A sodding monsoon is going to hit us at exactly the wrong time. And its my birthday, so not only are the team going to be deprived of a vital point, I am going to miss out on actually being bought a beer by Paperboy! Gutted. Sweaty mate, there was no need for you to go on holiday! 20/1 to see a ball bowled. Reckon its the karma police punishing us for losing to the bloody unicorns. ![]()
I can't get to Hove until about 6-30pm. Looking at the forecast I don't think it's going to be worth bothering.
I think I might even declare to Mrs PB that I won't bother with cricket tomorrow night as it will be nice to spend an evening in watching a film together instead.
But if the weather suddenly improves I could be sunk.
I'm at Lords on Thursday and then 4 days at Hove so I need to start collecting a few brownie points.
Leigh, I agree totally with you about mates buying you a beer on your birthday, it's a shame I won't be there tomorrow. The good news is that my birthday is 8th September which falls nicely on day 2 of the Northants game. I trust you will be in attendance.
Didnt know you were a fellow Virgoan Mart. We couldnt be more different! Me, shy, modest and retiring, shunning the spotlight whilst going quietly about my business and you, the archetypal social butterfly, flitting around a- schmoozin and a-cruising, hobnobbing with stars one minute, n'er-do-wells the next as you go on your merry way, Bognors answer to Piers Morgan, loved and loathed by some, ignored by others etc etc etc.
Cheers mate, happy birthday
PS May be able to get a pass for Lords thurs if tomorrow night is off....

That private education has clearly been wasted Leigh.
You have a lovely way with words, I'll see if anyone I know can suggest an alternative career for you. In the meantime perhaps a few of our fellow messageboarders may have some ideas for what they think you might be good at? In all honesty I'm struggling a bit at the moment to think of anything, however.....
Perhaps as a tour manager escorting "Beatles for Buddhists Tours".
We all know you've been to Aigburth, you're an expert on The Beatles, and you've also had your moments recently trying out Buddhism.
Enjoy your birthday. X

Assuming the rain gods are kind to us, is there any prospect that an imploding somerset could result in us finishing 1st, thus making cricket in other groups irrelevant?

I don't think so. Somerset are probably the best one day side in the country at the moment. With RHB, a confident Dwayne and no England call-ups I think we would have dominated for some time.
We will just have to build again and let the young guns prove themselves. Without Yards and Luke I think we may struggle a bit.
Now that's me in agreement with Mr Soft and Fluffy... and clearly there was a case of mistaken identity with that always soft and fluffy Mr Fawden.... so it must be that pesky Mr Sweaty who I was thinking of.
If anyone it's S&F, who you now say you agree with. There's a few who say we need one or two players but S&F thinks we need two batters and two bowlers, and keeps harping on about it as much as I do the youth.
Anyway, rather indirectly you've cleared the air, which will have to do - "Now don't do it again," to quote Brian of Nazareth's mother.
Peace out!

At full strength I'd have said Notts, us and then Somerset but even if they are the best on field unit, they lack in the most important part of having the steel to win when they absolutely need to. No doubt they have the quality to show well in group phases but even in the T20 semi, there only looked like one winner when the rain came and it wasn't them.
Have a good birthday Leigh. Forecast is bad at present.
happy birthday leigh : i share my birthday with paperboy!
just looked up the weather forecast for this afternoon ...
1600 ... temperature 16 °C
ESE wind at 17 mph with gusts of 28 mph ....
increasing as the game develops
does that mean its blowing in from midwicket
when bowling to a right hander from the sea end?
visibilty is "poor"
there is cloud with a bit of sun poking out on the site too!
have a good day...i have to go to work but will be following with interest
happy birtday leigh.
cant help but feel that unicorns debacle will come back to haunt us,but feel we have been competitive in this form of cricket whilst we have been rebuilding which i think bodes well for the future, add this to getting back to the first division assuming we dont collapse it will still be a good season.
Just checking after today's results but am I right in thinking that that we need Glos to lose at Northants and Essex to lose at least one of their games, assuming we beat Surrey?
Somerset have blown themselves out, fancy not running Christian out when they had a chance for an extra £120k - they must be kicking themselves. As I have read, oft times on this thread, we really should not have messed up to Glamorgan or Unicorns although I watched Lancashire nearly come unstuck at Colwyn Bay today against the Unicorns today.
I'm a Libra. Never any cricket on my birthday.
You won't beat Surrey, so a lot of this is academic.
I hope to be there at Hove on Saturday.

You should change your allegiances then old fruit. I'm a Libran too and enjoyed Sussex playing in the Champions Trophy last winter whilst the Scales were prominent.
AEW I remember watching that tournament (I forgot it was in October) - we have a visitation from a Sussex supporter whenever you're live on Sky. I remember the main drama was whether Trescothick would get on the plane to play for Somerset.
I was there for three days when you beat us at your gaff this year. To be honest, we aren't that good. ![]()
