2ND XI: Nice little Wernars for Second Eleven in double victory29-May-2012
Sussex’s Second Eleven got off to a flying start yesterday in the SEt20 tournament with two victories over Hampshire at Preston Nomads CC.
In the first encounter, Sussex shot out the visiting opposition for only 115 as Will Beer (3 for 15) and Chris Liddle and Luke Wells, who took two wickets apiece, did the damage with the ball.
In reply, Sussex reached their target with nearly two overs to spare. Wells and Matt Machan put on 48 for the first wicket, and they scored 29 and 30 respectively to propel the hosts on their way. John Mooney’s 20 and an unbeaten 18 from Andrew Hodd were two of the other main contributions.
Hampshire once again batted first in the second encounter of the day and this time scored a much more competitive 141 for 4, Beer again the pick of the bowlers for Sussex taking 2 for 17 from four overs.
But even with the bigger score it was no match for a rampant Sussex side that showed no mercy as they look to defend the tournament they won last year. This time it was skipper Kirk Wernars who smashed 63 from 54 balls whilst Machan also scored 32.
Sussex are back in action today with another double-header in the tournament as they face the MCC Young Cricketers at Horsham CC. The matches begin at 11.30am and 3.00pm, and entrance is FREE
