2ND XI: Squeezed out by Essex under the D/L Method06-Jun-2012
Sussex’s Second Eleven were defeated in the Second Eleven Trophy yesterday as they were narrowly beaten by four runs by Essex under the Duckworth/Lewis method.
Sussex won the toss at Halstead CC and after electing to bat, scored 219 for 5 from their 40 overs. Skipper Kirk Wernars, who had hit 92 for Hastings in the Sussex Premier League on Saturday, carried on his good form with a knock of 95 whilst Murray Goodwin (34), Matt Machan (20) and Andrew Hodd (25) all chipped in.
With rain playing a part with lots of action across the country yesterday, Essex’s innings was reduced to 30 overs and having reached 157 for 5, the umpires called off the match due to the persistent drizzle and the hosts won on the Duckworth/Lewis method.
Jaik Mickleburgh, captaining the side, was the star of the show for the hosts as he hit an unbeaten 90 opening the batting. There was a wicket apiece for three Sussex bowlers in the shape of Lewis Hatchett, Amjad Khan and Will Beer.
