2ND XI: Sussex edge home at The PROBIZ

06-Jul-2012

There was a thrilling finish the Second Eleven Championship match between Sussex 2nd XI and Gloucestershire at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove yesterday as the hosts edged home by three runs with three balls to spare.

The visitors declared on their overnight score of 125 for 6 on the morning of Day Three in an attempt to force a result as they remained 190 runs behind Sussex, meaning Lewis Hatchett finished the innings with figures of 4 for 8.

It proved to be a fruitful declaration by Gloucestershire as Sussex never got to grips with the second innings and were reduced to 80 for 4. Andy Hodd and Callum Jackson both made an unbeaten 24 but with the lead at 270 Sussex decided to declare to set the visitors a target of 271 inside 70 overs.

And it was an exciting finish as the hosts took the final wicket inside the last over of the day as Gloucestershire edged towards their target. The runs of Jack Taylor, who hit five sixes in his knock of 51, really accelerated them into a winning position but once he was bowled off his pads by Hatchett, further wickets begin to tumble.

At nine wickets down, Gloucestershire required only 6 from the final over to be bowled by Monty Panesar and after a single off each of the first two balls, Craig Miles flicked to Luke Wells at mid-on and Sussex had won the match by three runs. Panesar finished the pick of the Sussex bowlers with his figures of 5 for 45.

The Second Eleven are back in action on Monday when they travel to the Isle of Wight to take on MCC Young Cricketers at Newport CC. They play a one-day match in the Second Eleven Trophy on Monday (12.00pm) before a Second Eleven Championship match from Tuesday (11.00am).
