2ND XI: Sussex’s Second Eleven defeated in Final02-Jul-2012
The Sussex Second Eleven were beaten by England Under-19’s in the SE t20 Finals Day at Arundel Castle on Saturday.
Sussex had reached Finals Day for the second successive season and faced Essex in the semi-finals before they could take their slot to defend their trophy. After batting first against Essex they reached 166 for 6 from their 20 overs. Matt Machan, opening the batting top-scored with 70 whilst fellow opener Luke Wells made 32.
In reply the visitors never looked set to chase down the total and a devastating spell of 4 for 17 from James Anyon accounted for the Essex middle order as they could only make 107 for 8. Michael Rippon, following up his superb first team debut the night before at Hove, was amongst the wickets again taking 3 for 22.
The victory meant Sussex would go on to face England Under-19’s in the final following their victory over Worcestershire in the semi-final. Sussex won the toss and after electing to bat scored 156 for 6 with Wells this time taking the top-scorer’s mantle with 53, whilst Will Adkin (21), Harry Finch (28) and Devon Endersby (23 not out) all chipped in.
The total though was unfortunately not strong enough to trouble England and despite a wicket apiece for Anyon and Matthew Hobden, their opponents won by 8 wickets with more than two overs remaining.
It was an excellent achievement for the Sussex Second Eleven to reach the final again this season after last year’s success and they are back in action today, facing Gloucestershire in the Second Eleven Trophy at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove from 12.00pm, and entrance of course is FREE
