ACADEMY: Callum Jackson Blog

20-Feb-2012

Sussex and England Under-17 wicketkeeper-batsman Callum Jackson is currently touring India with his fellow international age group players and is once again keeping us posted on his progress.

20th February 2012

We are now well over the half-way point in the tour and have played five out of the eight games.

The training camp has been a camp of two parts; the first week concentrated on getting the team acclimatised and learning how to play in the Indian conditions. The second part has been focused on the matches with the non-match days occupied by intense training on playing spin (and two hours of school work a day!).

The opposition on the whole have been extremely strong and as a result we have won two and lost three. The Indians have struggled early on against our seamers but they are very good players of spin, hitting cleanly through the line on very true pitches.

I have learnt a great deal about playing spin as about 90 per cent of the net bowlers we have faced out here have been spinners and I hope this experience will pay off in England this summer, especially if it is a hot dry one.
Away from cricket I had my first Tuk Tuk ride last night, which felt only slightly safer than being on the back of one of the hundreds of motorbikes on the main roads. It was a scary but awesome experience. I still haven’t got used to the driving out here, all normal road rules do not seem to apply. I have my driving test when I return to England and I hope I haven’t picked up any bad habits while being driven around Pune! I am also starting to look forward to some home cooking as curry for lunch and dinner each day is starting to get monotonous.

One more game in Pune and then off to Mumbai for two more games before we fly back home on Friday.

Callum top-scored for England U-17s on Monday against a Pune XI in a 50-over match. He hit 97 batting as a specialist batsman as the tourists fell 29 runs short of their target of 283.
