ACADEMY: Development XI win at Worthing04-Jun-2013
The Sussex Development XI returned to the top of the Sussex Premier League on Sunday with an impressive 13-run victory at Worthing.
Sussex won the toss and batted first on a wicket that gave a lot of encouragement to the spin bowlers throughout the game. Lucas Barker (35) and Connor Golding (47) got Sussex off to a good but steady start putting on 61 for the first wicket, before Barker became the first of Mason Crane’s six victims. Ben Shoare (29) added 54 for the second wicket with Golding, getting Sussex into a good position at the first drinks break at 115 for 1.
Worthing fought back immediately after drinks with the wickets of Shoare and Golding, bringing Fynn Hudson- Prentice (42) and Leo Cammish (29) together and they steadied the ship with a partnership of 59. Once this partnership was broken, wickets fell frequently in trying to score quick runs at the end of the innings, and Sussex were bowled out for 211, a very competitive score on the wicket.
In pursuit of their victory, Worthing had Michael Gould take 10 off the first over before skying an attempted pull off Abi Sakande to be dismissed in the second over. Matt Green (30) and Matt Machan (79) then constructed a second wicket partnership of 119 to put Worthing in control, with Machan playing a very professional and disciplined innings.
The game-changing moment came with the dismissal of Machan by left arm spinner Elliott Hooper (5 for 42, pictured) with the score at 134. Josh Hayward (3 for 60) then dismissed Green and Daryl Rebbetts in the next over and the game had swung Sussex’s way. Wickets continued to fall and Sussex completed victory with 9 balls remaining by 13 runs.
