ACADEMY: One win and one defeat in Guernsey

Following the announcement of Sussex strengthening their ties with the Guernsey Cricket Board last week, the Sussex Academy along with Cricket Performance Manager Keith Greenfield made their way over to the island at the weekend to take on the Guernsey Cricket Association in two separate one-day matches.

Both matches were held at the KGV Sports Ground in Castel and on Saturday Guernsey won the toss and elected to bat. They made 212 for 9 from their 50 overs but were mainly aided by an impressive unbeaten 127 from GH Smit. The pick of the bowlers for Sussex was John Glover, who made his first-class debut for the County last season, with 3 for 48 from this 8 overs.

There were some solid batting performances from the visitors in reply and it was wicketkeeper-batsman Callum Jackson who top-scored in the chase, making 52 whilst Ollie Graham and Harry Finch both made 22 in the top top-order. An unbeaten 36 from Tim Moses at number 7 ensured with the help of Glover (16*) that Sussex made their target with eight balls remaining.

On Sunday it was Sussex who won the toss and elected to bat first. Graham this time took the top-scoring role with the bat, making 66 as the scores were similar to the first game, with Sussex bowled out for 210 from their allotted 50 overs.

It was a tight finish from Guernsey but they reached their target off the final ball of the match, to win the game by four wickets. Josh Hayward’s impressively economic figures of 3 for 14 from 10 overs were the bowling highlight for Sussex but it wasn’t enough to avoid a slender defeat to the islanders.
