ACADEMY: Sussex begin Cape Town tour with solid victory

Jonty Jenner scored an aggressive 71 to help Sussex to victory

Sussex’s Academy are currently on a three-week tour of Cape Town, South Africa and played their first match on Thursday, beginning the match action with a win.

Facing club side St Augustine’s in a 50-over match, Sussex made 298 for 7 before bowling our their opponents for 188 to seal victory by 110 runs.

Batting first on a slow wicket with an incredible rough, sandy, slow outfield, Sussex set a good platform with Tom Clark scoring 63 in a good partnership with Joe Billings (24).

Jonty Jenner scored an aggressive 71 and set the game up well for the lower order to come and take advantage of having wickets in hand, and a strong wind blowing towards one boundary.

Nick Oxley scored a busy 33 with some excellent running between the wickets, and Nick Smith finished unbeaten on same score to help Sussex end their innings on 298, which looked more than a competitive total on the wicket.

Ben Twine and Smith opened the bowling and Twine was the pick of the seamers taking an early wicket. After the powerplay, spinners Olly Clarke and Will Collard had long spells and both bowlers controlled the run rate whilst picking up wickets.

Collard finished with figures of 2 for 43 and Clarke 1 for 24, with both players very economical throughout their spells, before Tom Gordon (2 for 22) and Oxley (3 for 29) finished off the innings, and bowl St Augustine’s out for 188 to seal a 110-run win.

Considering the uneven outfield, the boys committed very well to their fielding throughout the 50 overs. The conditions weren’t easy and required a certain amount of bravery to field the ball constantly, and although the hosts were a competitive side, the competition will get stronger as the tour continues.
