ACADEMY: Sussex's Development XI defeated at Billingshurst

Sussex’s Development XI player their latest Sussex Premier League match on Sunday at a blustery Billingshurst Cricket Club.

After the hosts had won the toss and elected to bat, it was Sussex who were on the top of the early exchanges with Billingshurst reduced to 14 for 2. However, Dan Doram, also of Sussex (35) and Mike Burroughs (40) led the recovery to take the score well past three figures.

Nick Oxley, who took 3 for 39 off his 17 overs, bowled very well during this spell despite not getting his reward until later on in the innings.

After Burroughs departed, Oxley and Jonty Jenner took four wickets between them for only a single, and Sussex can be very pleased with the effort and skill levels in the field as the hosts were bowled out for 167. Jenner finished with figures of 3 for 8 and wicketkeeper Joseph Gilligan had a good day behind the stumps, taking three catches and a stumping.

In reply, Abidine Sakande, another Sussex player amongst the opposition ranks, bowling down the hill made an impressive start with a very aggressive and accurate spell to take 5 for 10 off 7 overs.

Sussex skipper Delray Rawlins was taken by a real corker of delivery which nipped away; Rawlins playing the right shot but the ball found an edge leaving Mahesh Rajaratne to take a very smart slip catch.

At 43 for 6 perhaps the damage had been done. Ben Twine (11) showed determination with a lengthy middle order knock, before Jed O'Brien, batting at eleven, enjoyed his breezy knock of 25, including a lovely timed hook for six. In the end, Sussex came up 83 runs short.

Sussex Development boss Jason Finch said, “We take a lot of positives from the game. I thought our bowling and fielding were excellent with Nick taking the eye. At tea I thought we were right in it. But we have let the opening bowler dominate and haven't been able to deal with that which is very disappointing.

“Ben shaped up well with the bat and Jed made a very entertaining contribution at the end. It is a loss but now we look forward to the next game.”

The Development XI’s next game comes this Sunday 26th June when they make the trip to East Grinstead Cricket Club (12.30pm start).
