YOUTH: Under-17 boys face Somerset in three-day semi final

The Sussex Under-17s will play Somerset in the semi-final of the ECB Under-17 County Championship at The Blackstone Academy Ground sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College in a three-day game beginning tomorrow (Tuesday 15th August).

The side qualified by finishing top of Division 3A that covers London and the South East and is made up of teams from Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex.

The latter part of the group stage was affected by inclement weather, with rain limiting the number of overs bowled during the draws with Surrey and Essex.

Big wins against Middlesex and Kent at the start of the campaign were enough to send Sussex through to the semi-final, however. Amongst the star performers in those games were left-arm seamer, Will Sheffield, who took 5-21 in the first innings against Middlesex and Nick Oxley who scored a hundred in the victory over Kent.
Ahead of the clash with Somerset, Academy Director Carl Hopkinson said: “The recent rain has limited the amount of cricket we’ve played, which has been incredibly frustrating for the boys, but they fully deserve their semi-final place after the way they performed in the first two games.

“Obviously, we’re always looking to win, but it’s even more satisfying doing it with the mix of ages we have in the team.

“We’ve got a number of younger guys playing alongside the 17 and 18 year olds and it shows the depth of the pool of talent we have. It bodes very well for the future.”

Entry to all three-days of Sussex’s semi-final is free. Play gets underway at 11.00am on each of the three days. Directions to The Blackstone Academy Ground sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College can be found HERE.
