ACADEMY: Update from Cape Town

On their first full day of practice under the cloudless skies and heat of Cape Town at the Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC), Sussex’s Academy players met with the Club’s new vice-captain Chris Nash, who gave a very interesting overview of what it takes to maximise the opportunities given to those wanting to become a professional cricketer, especially while playing on tour abroad.

For most of the players it will be the first occasion they have been away from their family for a prolonged period of time. Chris remarked that he first toured abroad as a 16 year-old with Sussex teammates Matt Prior, Carl Hopkinson, Andy Hodd and Michael Yardy. He mentioned that like them thirteen years ago, the players should enjoy their time playing in fabulous conditions (as pictured above), at exceptional locations and take advantage of every opportunity on the field and as many local cultural experiences off it.

Chris also emphasised that personal sacrifices would need to be made if they decide to pursue their dream as a professional cricketer and enjoy the “Best Job in the World”. Rather than going out with their mates as much as they would like while they were growing up, they would be better placed to focus on their dream job or career path – and to reap the rewards having left school and possibly being able to play all over the globe; something which Chris now is very thankful for and “Playing for the Best Club in the World”.

On the field today, all the players had a chance to loosen and stretch themselves from the travelling to South Africa and enjoy some hard work batting, bowling and fielding. The training today was followed by a swim in the WPCC’s swimming pool before returning to the hotel about thirty minutes drive away. The players train on Thursday and have their first match, against Bishops School – one of the tougher local school opponents on Friday.

Thanks to Scorer/Analyst Graham Irwin for the updates from South Africa
