ANDRE BURGER ACADEMY: Australian youngster trains at Hove

25-Jul-2013

Sussex County Cricket Club’s burgeoning profile of links with countries and academies around the globe has increased recently as a young player from the Andre Burger Cricket Academy in Brisbane, Australia has been visiting to Hove to help improve his fledgling cricketing career.

16 year-old Zachary Denovan, a left-handed batsman and left-arm medium bowler, has spent the last three weeks at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, training with Sussex’s Second Eleven and the Academy, but mainly working on one-on-one technical skills with Cricket Performance Manager Keith Greenfield. He has also played for Mid Sussex Division One side Poynings during his stay.

It is hoped that this tie-up will enable further players to come over to Sussex at the end of each Australian domestic season. His Coach Andre Burger, who runs the Academy in Brisbane, has also been over in Sussex during the period to oversee the trip.

Burger explained the tie-up by saying, “I spoke to Keith Greenfield a few years ago about the possibility of bringing players over to develop their life skills as well as their cricket, and Sussex have really embraced the idea and I can’t speak highly enough of how supportive they have been.

“The most talented cricketers in the area back home get opportunities to travel with Queensland Cricket so it’s really important that we as an Academy are also able to offer these sorts of experiences and the arrangement with Sussex gives us the chance to do just that.

“We have some generous support from our sponsors who give us chance to develop these links and we are aiming to continue this arrangement and increase the number of players who are able to come to Sussex in the future.”

Denovan said, “It has really helped me to be able to focus purely on cricket whilst I’ve been over here. Back home we have to juggle our cricketing commitments at the Academy with our school work, so to be able to come over to Sussex to train and play for three weeks has been brilliant.

“Hopefully it will give me the edge when I return to Australia when we head back for pre-season and the strength and conditioning element of the preparation”.
