BIG HIT!: Dwayne Smith and Scott Styris in big-hitting action at Hove

27-Jun-2013

Sussex Sharks are gearing up for the Friends Life t20 and the big-hitting action began yesterday when their two overseas stars Dwayne Smith and Scott Styris both attempted a very special ‘World Record Attempt’ at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, Hove.

Dwayne and Scott were hoping to beat the longest distance a cricket ball has ever been hit which was recorded in 1856, according to Wisden, when the Rev’ Walter Fellows drove a ball 175 yards (160 metres) ‘from hit to pitch off a bowler called Rogers at the Christ Church ground in Oxford’.

With the players taking guard in a specially prepared net at the top of the ground and hitting towards the Spen Cama Pavilion, neither player managed to threaten the age-old record but Smith (pictured), who led Sussex to victory in the 2009 Twenty20 final, did manage 110 metres and with local business IEP Financial agreeing to make a donation to one of Sussex’s Charity Partners Rockinghorse for every ball hit further than 100 metres, the event also raised some cash for charity.

You'll be able to see the footage of the 'World Record Attempt' on Sky's Cricket AM in the coming weeks.

Sussex begin their Twenty20 campaign tomorrow evening when they take on Surrey at Hove and tickets are still available for their opening match. There are also four other group games taking place at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground. For tickets and more information please click HERE
